How do you make this plane pop?

Decided to have a go at this, duplicated the pic, desaturated the new layer and then did an equalise and set to overlay and reduced to 50% opacity. On a copy merged layer, ran a highpass and set to overlay mode. You could isolate the affect just to the plane with a mask

I extracted the plane, set a Curves AJ to really lighten it. Duped, High Pass to sharpen.

On a background duplicate, I did a Lens correction vignette, and then a G blur. Made a gradient mask so the blur would not affect the foreground as much.

If I had time, I probably would have replaced the ominous sky.

Here is another look that I thought you might like. brightened the plane slightly and faded the background in the first one, and faded the background a little less in the second one, but desaturated it completely.

I like that too Swampy. Just needs some prop motion blur.

Dave... I must have been a great inspiration, cause your fleet of Cesnas is cool! Great job on the propeller motion blur! :-)

Swampy it would be good to see your plane nose diving towards the ground with smoke coming from the engine.

Dave how did you do it?

Ask and ye shall receive! A fun play with my new Alien Skins plugins.

Just applied a little curves in LAB and unsharp mask then a tighter crop.

Hi Lonnie,

I not really fond of crashing planes, but that sure is one heck of a mean looking state 5 sea! Looks great!

Well, Dave, it was the OP's idea to crash and burn -- I just accommodated him! And yeah, I guess that could be the sea below, but I think it's actually a fantasy terra firma (ala Bryce). Anyway, that pilot is definitely having a bad day... even though his misfortune is visual candy for us onlookers! Thanks for the compliment. It was fun to make. Only took about an hour.
