Hi

I took the photo below and by a fluke caught the setting sun rays across the water. However as you can see there is a fringe/ halo (I am not sure the proper term) around the top of the sun and across the sky. I tried several methods like remove like cloneing, colour chanels etc and also tried to follow the tutorial for fringing found here. My best effort ( right hand photo) just made a brighter glow across the sky.

Is there a method of reducing/removing the fringe, but keep the sky uniform.

The patch tool on the area around and above the sun does a pretty good job of attenuating the pinkish halo above the sun. The Shadow / Highlight adjustment is helpful to tone done the highlights. Not sure if this is enough or too much for you but you can fine tune it into the range you want.

I selected the halo with quick mask (1/2 donut shape over the top of the sun) and feathered about 20 pixels. Hue/Saturation adjustment to reduce the red channel on the selection which is where most of the halo shows up. Minor tweak with color balance to boost cyan and yellow to blend.

the halo is flare from the sun hitting the objective...difficult, but doable!

There is some red reflection on water.

MisterMonday, Duwayne - Great work, differents methods, but same outcome. I am finding that reading different tutorials etc there many ways to achieve the desired result with Photoshop. In a funny way it makes it more difficult to learn if you try to remember all solutions.

Chillin - What method are using which shows up red in the water? Do you think it would be better if removed?

Red on the water is in the original picture, I did not alter it. I only left some red above the Sun to match with the water.

Hi Colan,

I used the healing brush tool around the fringing and opened up the image using curves, then I added some saturation.

It is a shame about the blow outs, but that happens. You could have tried moving a couple of steps to the right, or, if you camera will support one, try using a polarising filter. And don't forget the rule of thirds when cropping, your horizon line dissects the image in the centre and I feel that this takes away a little bit from the overall visual appeal of what would have been a fantastic shot. Having said that, the image itself is worth keeping, really nice effort :)

Thanks for taking the time to reply and advice. I think the saturation has given the picture more warmth. Unfortunately I cannot add a filter, but I am still a novice and will keep practicing.
