I know that every time you save a jpg file, it loses some information thus worsening a little.

My computer got very slow (it is really full now), so today I bought an external hard disk and I'm moving most of my files (which are for the majority images).
My camera is a Canon Powershot A710IS and, as far as I know, saves only in jpg so all my images, unless I manipulate them (and then I save them as tiff) are jpg. I was just looking at all those files passing through my computer to the external drive (I'm so afraid to lose everything!!) that suddenly I thought that perhaps those files are worsening. Am I right? Do they get ruined not only when you save them but also when you move or copy them? So from card to computer and then to computer to external hard drive they have already ruined? And what about those I passed already on a cd and wanted now to move to the ex. drive? Shall I just forget it?

I feel quite upset now..... :depressed

Don't feel upset..... your fine....
Just copying or moving the files , weather to the hard drive or burn to a cd does not change the quality of those jpg's... so your in good shaper

only when you either save to jpg or resave a jpg do you lose quality...

if you have the option, many program will allow you.... with jpg... lower the compression ratio ...... it means bigger files but less possiblity of quality loss....

note on a few cameras i have seen generally the jpg compression ratio is low.... and that good

your quite welcome....... as far as your slow system... i don't know much about your system.....
but commone culprits to look at...
1. of course do your antispyware and antivirus scanning to make sure there not the problem
2. go into your msconfig... and disable all needles programs that startup at windows boot... that will give you a faster startup and improve performance of the system and regain you some of that precious ram....
3. take a look at your task list>cpu tab ... when not doing anything it should be below 5%... if significantly above that then take a look at the processes tab and see if any significant culprit can be seen.....

well those are just few things to look at... good luck and happy computing

I do not know what happened at my computer but it keeps on "thinking"..... I decided to bring it to specialised people and that's why I wanted to move my pictures. Most of them are "personal", and I do not want other people to access them.... Few days ago I bought an antivirus (Norton) but nothing was found. How do I access the msconfig? I think there are lots of useless programs that start at the boot. But would I recognised them? I'm not sure.....

just go to your run command and type msconfig.exe .... that it and in the window that shows there will be several tabs go to the startup tab....

these links will give you guidlines on what programs you can disable from starting up and discription ... in many cases only you can make that final decision....
