I recently read an article regarding this photo by David Field:
http://www.adobe.com/education/adaa/winners/2005/field.html

It said:

"Photoshop was used to intensify the levels and tones. Subtle warm filters were painted into the fill flash areas while cooling filters were painted into the rim-lighted areas."

What is a warm filter and cooling filter: dodge and burn?

There are warming and cooling filters in the Image>Adjust>Photo Filter or the Photo Filter Adjustment Layer in Photoshop. Most likely what was done was to use a the Photo Filter Adj layer and then paint with a black or white brush on the layer mask which is automatically added to the layer. By painting with black and white soft brushes and varying the opacity you can selectively apply the cooling and warming filters to the image.

Basically a warming filter will add orange tint and a cooling will add a blue tint.

you can clearly see that the models are cut in to the picture...the effect for me is just plain and doesn't give any benefit to what effect he is trying to achieve...look at Erwin olaf ... this guy has a bit more intense boxing pictures...but he is a master with lights...

You can use my Paint With Light I action at www.atncentral.com and paint with color vs. black and white. You can sample the object for color (skintone, green grass, blue sky). Here's a link from 3 years ago.
