Voting -- Entries in July 2007 Photo Assignment: "Candid"

You may view the entries in the Competition thread or all together here: http://www.pbase.com/shadepuppy/july_2007_retouchpro_photo_assignment

This month we are continuing to allow voting by all RetouchPro members.

Post your choices (in this thread) for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd by listing the member's name. If you want to explain your reasons, please do -- we all like to hear how people respond to our images. Since there are no trophies for this competition, our real prize is reading that our photo caught your attention and perhaps even your admiration.

Vote for the 3 best entries in order.
Votes will be weighted to give greater weight to First Place votes than to Second and greater weight to Second than to Third place votes. When you place a vote for First Place, that entry will receive three (3) points; when you place a vote for Second, that entry will receive two (2) points, and a vote for Third Place will receive one (1) point.

Example Vote:
Pick the top 3 entries and list in order...

1. Entry X - First Place -- ( 3 points)
2. Entry A - Second Place --( 2 point)
3. Entry C - Third Place --(1 point)

This voting thread is now open and will close Monday July 30th at midnight (EDT). The winner will be notified and will choose the subject for the August competition.

I'm probably no judge of what is technically a good photo, so I voted on what in my opinion fitted the brief best.

1st Swamp Donkey Don't think you can get more candid than snapping someone asleep. Nicely framed and exposed, you caught the moment just right.

2nd Janet Petty You can see the subject is away in a world of his own here. Focus could have been better which is why this one wasn't 1st.

3rd Chris Hoggy When looking at the thumbnail I couldn't see how it fitted the brief, then I looked at it full size and the thumbs up from the pilot (even if it's not his thumb) explained all. Could have been framed slightly better (though it was no doubt a difficult subject to capture), which is why 3rd.

Here is mine:

SwampDonkey - Great pic of a snoozing man. He'd be mortified if he knew he'd been captured on film.
Chris - Marvelous photo, especially for one taken on the fly (oops pun).
Jasz - This really looks like a snapshot taken without the subject's knowledge. I wonder what she is thinking.

Well to my mind I see it as follows:

1. Jasz looks the most impromptu
2. Janet Petty looks most contemplative
3. Swamp Donkey's looks a little like what you'd expect in National Geographic

My votes:

1 - SwampDonkey: Meets the theme and has visual interest; framing, composition, and exposure all emphasize and enhance the subject. Nice light, and great detail.

2 - Jasc: Meets the theme and her expression grabs my attention; framing, composition and exposure all work well.

3.ScubaMargie: Meets the theme and stirs some interest in the subject's behavior; framing, composition and exposure all work well.

Janet Petty -- though a candid shot, his expression is similar to a posed shot (to me) -- I think I'd like to see more of what he's looking at or doing.

Chrishoggy -- maybe the copter is "caught unawares", but the crew seem to be posing. ;) Nice shot, and a beautiful copter.

This thread is now closed -- voting is complete. (I took a nap, so it closed late ;) )

The official winner is Swampdonkey!

1st Place - Swampdonkey (14 points)

2nd Place - Jasz (12 points)

3rd Place - Janet Petty (6 points)

Congratulations to each of the competitors for submitting an entry and meeting the challenge of using your camera rather than just looking at it admiringly. ;)

We will await Swampdonkey's choice of subject for the August competition.
