I'm not sure which forum to post this on, but this photo c. 1900 has a couple effects I'd like to try on a modern portrait. I think I can do the vignette and the page curl, but how do I replicate the pin effect?

the pin has so little detail that i would think you could just draw it in. and, that's coming from someone who doesnt draw worth a darn :)

Look for a picture of pin, or take one yourself. Cut it out using the 'pen tool' to make a 'selection'. Once you have your 'selection', 'copy' and 'paste' into your working image on a new 'layer'. To get the bit in the middle were it looks like its going through the paper - this is done with a 'layer mask'.

I'd just copy and past a pin, then I'd mask over it and just paint back the end with the head, skip the middle section and paint back the pointed end..... add a little shadow and, viola..... here's a link to some pins that would be perfect.... over at Stock Xchange..... it's free.... http://www.sxc.hu/photo/795397

Make a copy of the pin that's in your photo. Then add dirt, shadow,etc.

The curled page in early photography indicated that the person was deceased. I'm not sure what the pin meant, but I bet it means something!

Dumb question, but since the person was obviously alive when the photograph was taken, does the curled page mean that the photo was a copy of another photo?

Yes, they took another photo and had it redone as a memorial.
