Here is my attempt at duplicating the style of the old cabinet photo in my previous post. The lovely couple in the photo were photographed on their 70th anniversary. They had been married for 76 years before their deaths within four months of each other.

That turned out really nice.

Lovely photo of a lovely couple. Just a couple of nits - the shadows from the page curls fight with each other and the pin was obviously inserted by a lefty :) Actually that boils down to one nit and a wry observation.

Thanks for the advice. Shadows drive me nuts. I can't seem to get it through my head how they should go. The original cabinet print doesn't seem to have any, or maybe just a little.
No, the pin was inserted by a dyslexic righty.

It helps me to think about where the light is coming from, and how objects in the image get in its way. I also spend some time looking carefully at shadows around the house, and at the light sources that are making them. In your case the objects are the paper curls. The main (brightest) light should come from just one direction. In your image, there seem to be three equally bright sources, each one aimed lengthwise from point to wide end down one of the curls, with a fourth strong source aimed straight at the photo. Maybe the original cabinet print was lighted straight on with a relatively diffuse light. You could play with a curled piece of paper (a newspaper is nice and pliable, but the little letters get in the way of seeing shadow) and observe how the shadows act.

Shadows aside (and I really meant it that my comment was just a nit), I'd love to know how you did the curls.

For the curls, I used a free plug-in called Mac's page curl. Then, because it left a ragged edge, I selected the page curls and blurred the edges. Afterword, I applied a sepia photo filter. The plug-in allows you to add the shadows, that's where I got carried away.

Bill-I love how the sepia tone goes with the frame color. I think it'll make a great background for other photos of this couple.
