I am working on my first real restoration. I am fairly good with photoshop but i don't know the best way of fixing certain things. The first images shows the original scan. The second shows where i am at with fixing it. My question is how do i deal with the edge of the photo. I looks like it was in a frame at one point and has faded. How is the best way to get this back to match the rest of the photograph.

Also any advice on what else needs to be done with this photo to get it looking good again.

Since the focus would be on the couple, I just used the crop tool to take out the little bit of darkness around the edges.

I can think of several ways but I would try this one first.
Above the background layer, add a new layer filled with 50% Gray and set the blend mode to Soft Light. Now select a soft white brush with Opacity set to 20-30%. Next paint over the frame. As you do it will become lighter. If you overdo it, switch the brush to black and paint over the frame to darken it. In spots the color of the lightened frame will match the background but in other spots it will not. Don't worry, the idea here is to get the luminosity the same. Once you do, add a new blank layer on top of the image with the Blend mode set to Color. Now with a soft paint brush, sample a nearby good color and paint over the areas where the color is not matched. If you matched the lightness, your painted areas will now match the background. The attachment below was a sloppy 1 minute fix to give you an example.

First thing to do is get the window on the right of the image in an upright position. Crop away any information that is not really necessary to the image - most of the border disappears that way :) Used levels layer to bring out the image, patched, cloned and healed where necessary.

Some color information is hidden in the bottom left corner. It could be used to colorize the sofa.

Next time you post, perhaps you would be so kind as to post at 100K so that we can help you in a better fashion.

I will second the suggestions however in correcting the perspective and cropping.
