See what you can do with the picture of this young lady.

For my version I used Photoshop:
Curves;
Buzz Pro;
Smudged with Linda's Brush and Sarsa's Hair Brushes using lighten, darken and normal modes;
Lots of Dodging and Burning with 1 to 4 pixel brushes;
Trimoon's Cotten Canvas applied selectively with layer mask;
Curves again;
Nik Sharpener Pro.

Have fun using your creativity.

Gorgeous photo...

Ziaphra, yours is a stunning interpretation. With the face lighting you created it really becomes the dominate element since the red hair no longer competes for the eyes attention.

Here is my go at it. I have been doing impresionist stuff for a while now and almost forgot how to do a smudge painting. Anyway, hope you like it....

Oily pastels and blenders in Painter, contrast/color correction in Photoshop

I thought this girl reminded me a lot of Ariel from the Little Mermaid... so I thought I'd see what I could do to make her look that way. I considered adding more elements to make her more mermaidish, but I only had like 30 minutes to work on it and didn't want to get too carried away. The first image is the background change and the second is a more painterly version.

Tahnks you guys.
Yes Palms it was the water paper filter on a 50%grey b/ground, overlaid with a slight emboss, then used one of the colour channels as a mask to soften the effect. Glad U liked it.

I had another go as well!!!!

Desaturated and painted with a pencil in Painter.

Back to Photoshop, layer blend mode set to Linear Burn over the original

oh, now i see what's gotten everyone distracted from the other threads! :)

i like that, dee dee. that treatment is quite suggestive of many things.

I had no idea what I was doing, Craig. I just ran a soft pencil in auto mode in Painter. It was when I brought it back to Photoshop and started playing with blending modes that this effect popped up. I can't put my finger on it, but I kinda liked the effect too.

it's almost like seeing it through a gauze curtain or something. very provacative.

i had a go also. just some Paint Shop Pro work. no filter forge this time :)

Can someone please post a link to a videotutorial about "smudging"?

lg CalvinUnfortunately a very good tutorial of this nature is no longer available at Nikoncafe.com.

I found this one by googling: photoshop smudge painting video

http://video.aol.com/video-detail/id/176729780

Pretty basic, but a start in the right direction.

The first link to Lisa's video dosent work but if you go to this page and thread #46 the link there works ( just tried it, but i did have to move the slider slightly to start it)

Really nice image to play with and some very nice renditions.
Mainly used Nik filters.

Wow, there are some very creative and beautiful renditions here. As a reward for your creativity here is a little gift. Check out Imagenomic's Portraiture plug-in here: http://www.imagenomic.com/download.aspx
for a free trial download. It is a bit pricey but when you see what it can do you may want to take the plunge. IMHO, no semi-serious retoucher should be without it. It is the slickest plug-in I have ever seen. For me it took my work to a whole new level that I never thought possible.

photomaster, thank you, btw, for posting the image. lovely picture, lovely woman.

and i also very much like your original rendition. you have a combination there, of sharpness and softness which i find very appealing.

and, thanks for the link. i tried it out. it seems to only work on photoshop and not Paint Shop Pro. it crashed psp when i ran it from there. seems like a good piece of software. simple interface, very intuitive and did a nice job on the image i tried with it.

Still experimenting with various simplication techniques. Cat (other forum) started a theme thread concerning Gradients which I see lot's of potential for certain abstract renderings. Used a multi-color gradient to start things off and did some other things too. :)

It's been ages since I've played with Impressionist, forgot how much fun it it is!
this is 4 layers starting with a large chalky brush then progressivly shrinking the brush and masking out unwanted detail.

Gave myself ten New York minutes and came up with this..maybe I can put a little more time into it later! Beautiful portait to begin with; in a way, I hated to alter it.

Buzz simplifier and pure colour on the first layer, with a coloured edge outline merged on top..paint strokes in Gertrudis Pro because I am pressed for time..then another edge layer on top of that...

Glad you got over the hump with Buzz. I see why it's among your favorite plugins.
