i've been going through some old pictures and i found one of my grandfather so i thought i would try to fix it up. i started looking online to find tutorials and i came upon this site. ive already used photoshop for webdesign but this is my first restoration. let me know what you think

Very good, Shane! I would add a highpass sharpening and an S curve to bring up the detail and contrast, but other than that, ya did good! :-)

For a first attempt a commendable effort, however there are some things need attending to.

A little overdone on the contrast, you've lost detail in the eyes that was present in the original picture. As this is where most people subconsciously look, then it's important you get it right. His hair has lost detail as well.

There's also a lot of blown out area to the left of his head (as we look at him), these draw your eyes from his face, which is after all the subject of the picture.

Good one shane,just remember these old photographs were not usually sharp,they always were soft with shallow depth of field.Also the contrast was usually not that wide whites were usually a little muddy and blacks were usually dark grays,not always but usually.So always take a really good look at the original before you start
