View Full Version : Sky/Sea palms1 08-10-2007, 06:32 AM I have noticed while surfing some art sites that they use the sky and the sea a lot, So i wondered if any one here was up to a sort of challenge to come up with a piece of art using either one or both subjects. In any style
I have posted some from my albums but dont feel you have to use them, use your own or stock ones, just post the originals alongside
And just incase you need inspiration have a look here there is loads of it

Palms Here's a composite I assembled in February, Palms. palms1 08-10-2007, 01:43 PM Thats a great composite Lonk, I love the seagull spend most of my holidays trying to get a good shot of one, but so far i havent got what i am after ! ! !
I mainly just messed with colours on these except for the second and used the ahb brush as well
Palms Gary Richardson 08-10-2007, 02:17 PM Had to have a play, added a palm to mine, hope that's OK. palms1 08-10-2007, 03:31 PM Great colours Gary the palm sets it of beautifully, I of all people cant mind about a palm

Palms
Yeah, well an Oak just didn't seem to work, then I thought a Beach (oops sorry Beech) but that didn't go either, so what more appropriate than a Palm, [silken tongue mode]which goes so well with all things artistic[/silken tongue mode]. :) palms1 08-11-2007, 05:31 AM You better watch that tongue Gary bet it could get you into a bit of trouble :) or out ! ! !
another go threw loads at it mainly ahb, and colour tweeking though.
Palms pavel123 08-11-2007, 06:04 AM Not sure if that goes under sea ambrella, something I did for another forum earlier

Palms pavel123 08-11-2007, 08:07 AM Real estate description would be "waterfront property with a romantic view" Gary Richardson 08-11-2007, 11:31 AM Nice one Pavel.
Watch out for that first step when you turn right out of the doorway, it's a doozy. Palms, nice watercolor painterly. Pavel, awesome HDR type render.
Here's another monotone composite I did awhile back derived primarily from the color photo. Gary Richardson 08-12-2007, 09:07 AM Nice image Lonnie, great capture of the surf.
Shame about the concrete breakwater structures in the foreground it kind of holds my eye, I think it would have worked better with a natural rock outcrop, but a nice dramatic treatment all the same. Thank, Gary.
Oh and BTW, I like your palm tree rendition. Adding tree silhouettes is a great technique to add framing and depth to an otherwise stark open scenic. Peter S 08-27-2007, 06:20 PM Well I used one of yours Palms.
Not sure where I was going with this, I'm not sure I got there either.
Used all sorts of filters/blend modes and fades- just playing around.
Peter palms1 08-28-2007, 02:23 AM Well you might of been playing around but you have come up with a interesting image Peter
Palms Gary Richardson 08-28-2007, 03:08 AM Interesting's the word.
Hard to tell whether it's a "cloudy" sea, or "wave tossed" clouds, or a little of both. I like it. palms1 08-28-2007, 05:16 AM Interesting's the word.

described my thoughts excactly :)
Palms CathyH 08-30-2007, 05:59 AM Hi Palms I have been working on this for several days (on and off) finally finished it. I flipped the cloudy sky over and added it too the waves. Used some what color techniquies from swampy's new water color video 2.
Palms - I like the soft color in your water color version and thanks for posting these to play with.
Lonk - your stuff is very slick
Peter - I really like the abrstract you got, it would make a cool background
Gary - I like the colors and the and the tree you added gives it focual point.
Pavel - "waterfront property with a romantic view" - yours is creepy and like palms I wouldn't want to live there. palms1 08-30-2007, 06:39 AM Cathy I love it,
And if you have time for a story sit down and i will explain
While on this holiday I saw and fell in love with a painting it was huge and very expensive, All it was ( not meant to be deragatory) was a grey background (sea) with just the surf/ foam in white. simple but gave off a huge impact. So i thought i could perhaps do something similar in Photoshop and started taking photo's of the sea, well i was wrong and havent got close,
but yours is very close and if you dont mind i would like to print your rendition off to keep as a memento.
All posting have been superb on this, a lot of thinking outside of the box ( swampy taught me that term  ) hopefully there may be more done in the future, there hasnt been a modern art, impressionism, etc etc yet
Palms CathyH 08-30-2007, 07:19 AM Palms I'm very flattered that you like mine enough to want to print it.
You definitely have my permission to print it out. If you would like me to send you the larger file let me know and I will.
cathy GerryB 09-04-2007, 09:45 AM I've been working on this for a while. I'm thinking of making some revisions but haven't had the time yet. Too many projects in the fire...LOL palms1 09-04-2007, 09:49 AM Very nice Gerry, the sky colours are quite impressive I like it a lot
Palms GerryB 09-05-2007, 12:15 AM Thanks, Palms. The sunset colors were inspired by a Cory Barker segment in Photoshop TV episode 95 (August 20, 2007). I added a "blue" layer underneath and used a layer mask on the sunset colors layer to blend it into the layer underneath. The water and sun reflection were also inspired by the same segment. I added a red layer above the sea the set the blend mode to color and adjusted the opacity to achieve the color.
Since I'm in Las Vegas for Photoshop World and on a laptop, I don't have access to the original work and cannot check my explanation with that file so I'm relying on my memory. palms1 09-05-2007, 02:38 AM Since I'm in Las Vegas for Photoshop World and on a laptop, I don't have access to the original work and cannot check my explanation with that file so I'm relying on my memory.
And here's me thinking you go to Las Vegas for the slot machines ! Will be waiting to see what you have learnt in future posts
have fun
Palms Gary Richardson 09-05-2007, 02:56 PM The birds are a nice touch Gerry, they draw your attention into the sky colours where it's all happening.
Foreground doesn't quite work for me somehow, but love the overall image. GerryB 09-05-2007, 04:02 PM The birds are a nice touch Gerry, they draw your attention into the sky colours where it's all happening.

I admit the foreground needs something. I had taken several pictures in Carlsbad, CA at sunset and these were the basis of the picture. The rocks started out as silouettes and morphed into what they are now. I am planning to break them up in several layers and do something with each, but that will have to wait until I get back from Las Vegas.
Thanks for the critique. | |
