I've restored a half dozen old studio photos from the mid-teens to early 1920's and always thought/referred to the photographer as "he" or "him". While looking for something else I found a duplicate copy of one I've already done that was still in the studio photo folder. I was very surprised at what I found on the cover! I don't think women running a studio (especially in the south) was common in those days? Does anyone know?
