I've recently taken it upon myself to restore a load of 50 year old plus photos for my mothers' family tree project and I'm a bit concerned about the damage I could be causing to the original photos. One of the photographs in particular was taken about 1916 and is in fantastic condition so I'd rather not scan it if there is a chance I could damage in some way.
Any advice for safe scanning would be most welcome.

Welcome to RP! The light from a flat bed scanner is not intense enough to damage the photo, certainly not for the 1 or 2 minutes that it will be in the scanner. The spectrum of light emitted also does not have enough harmful energy to worry about.
