Are you a freehand artist? Do you use auto painting, or both?

If so I wish you would pleae tell me how to get a decent image from that software. I have been trying to use auto paint. Have tried every combination of brush and setting I can think of and have yet to come up with anything I would consider good photo art.

Care to tell us why you like it...and pass along a few pointers?

Steve....

There is the same auto painting in Painter....I never did get a totally "finished " picture by just doing auto...BUT....its fun to do auto and then pick out the details you want with a brush of your choice....then you will see how handy auto painting is ...if you are in a rush!!!!

Hi Patricia.

I have tried that, and I mostly get half photo and half photo art. I am not an artist and need all the computer help I can get. This works as a touch up method but I can't get it to work for bringing out photo art detail with this program.

I suspect that one problem is that you cannot change the brush size in auto paint and to get the better detail and less paint smears this would be what I need. In PS you start with a large brush and reduce size as you paint, giving you the amount of detail you desire. Can't do this in PE4 in auto paint.

I would like for someone to do an auto painting in this program, one that they think has good detail and a nice painterly look and tell me the steps used. If I find one path to a good result, then I may be able to go from there.

Thanks for your help. I envy the artists among you folks out there. I can see where this would be an excellent program for painting from scratch.

Sorry i didnt explain myself too well Steve...

When you have done the auto painting...click it away and if you want great detail use the cloner brushes on the main page...to bring the outlines out...i dont think all can be done in the auto painting mode!!! When i have a mo i will see if i can find a tutorial for you...dont give up just yet...you will enjoy it once you know what is what and really you are getting there!!!

Well done Steve...You are getting there...your pic looks like one....my aim is to get rid of the photo look and get a painted look...wether it be watercolor,oils or acrylics....Do you know that you can use any of the brushes to clone by clicking on the clone icon in your paint palette...took me ages before i got that!!!!

Yes, I was aware of that re. the brushes. Have been running through the different settings with the different brushes.

Working on closeups seems to make it easier to pull out the detail of the original yet give it a painted look. Mostly I am getting paint strokes that just blur or smear the original and leave no detail even when I use the soft or hard edge cloners for touchup.

I tend to do a muck up of the whole pic with a big brush...then as i go along i change the brush size smaller...could be the same brush or a different one...the smaller the brush the more detail you will have....Its really scary when you first start with Painter and i still consider myself a beginer...cause there really is so much to learn...Well done Steve....Oh and another tip...when you have finished your painting...click on equalize...it really pops the colors......:D

Is it worth to upgrade from version 3 to 4?

I use Painter IX and i am just trying to get Steve into painting....I did get Essentials 3 with some software and had a look at it...it hasnt as many functions as Painter but i think its good...it has all the basics....I havent upgraded my Painter as i feel i have much to learn so i am sticking with IX for the time being...Sorry i cant help with your decision....
