…anyone working on any new, cool projects lately, anything challenging?

Dunno bout cool, but got 3 composite images I'm working on for some non-profit hospital that my friend shoots for occasionally. Nice to work on a friend's images and great to get the referral. At least it's not beauty.. speaking of which. I get 35 hair and beauty images today. The rest is just hair, makeup and other mostly boring ads at the job job. Should be a good month.

Oh, did those black gloves to white. Turned out really well - no need to shoot it, just had to get my hands dirty. That thread helped.

that's good to hear with the gloves.

composites can be fun, pain in the ass sometimes, but i kind of like that stuff, let's you get a little creative.

always nice to book a long gig.

i just finished up doing these 3-d cigarette packs, open lids with butts and stuff, all different angles, think 20 in total, illustrator & photoshop.

came out cool, but i hate this project, i get my hands on it every year, glad it's over.

yeah, I do a lot of composite work when not doing beauty - more that than still life (thank Dog). This particular project is cool because they are "open to semi-unrealistic interpretations" and I'm not dealing with an art director. They gave me their list of things they wanted attended to. Some of the how is up to me. Will most likely be 1. Do something nice looking 2. Get "That looks great" 3. Send and bill.

I hear you about going back and forth with Illustrator files. We do hair products with a good bit of that. At least a box has flat sides. Good to hear that your hated project is at least out the door.

haha, last year the boxes had flat sides....this year they manufatured rounded-edge boxes. And concave cig butts! But i'm always up for a challenge!

I've been working on this still on and off for about a month. Everything is CG so far. Eventually, I'll replace the sky and the far away background with real photos. My goal is to make everything as close to photorealistic quality as possible. One step at a time.

that sounds like a pretty involved project. Pretty tough as well.

Yeah...I need to pick up some learning materials as opposed to wasting time experimenting with different lighting scenarios that gets me nowhere.

What 3d software?
Maya. More specifically, photorealistic lighting and rendering with Mental Ray.
