I'm looking into copyrighting or registering, whichever it is, a business name for a film company. I've searched a bunch online and can't seem to find a definite answer -- just a lot of info to wade through. Is it true that you only register a name in your state, and not necessarily nation wide? Do I just do it through my state's government website?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Here in Florida you register with the state. I also filed a fictitious name in the newspaper (DBA - doing business as). My attorney helped me set up my business as a sole proprietorship.
You need to contact an attorney in your state to get that all worked out.
I do not believe that you can copyright a company name, but you can get a registered trademark, but that is just my opinion. Remember that I am not an attorney. I am just a photographer and sometime retoucher even though I sometimes dabble in amateur brain surgery.......:)

Brain surgery, wow. That's intense. Either way, thanks for the advice.
