View Full Version : Waiting for the sunrise Janet Petty 10-30-2007, 07:02 PM While waiting for the sunrise on the Steel Creek access to the Buffalo River this morning (and freezing my fingers into unusable stubs), I shot the fog rising off the river.
The picture is straight out of the camera. Your challenge, should you accept it, is to fix it up, then paint it to your liking. Beware, the fog plays havoc with the settings. Enjoy.
Janet lkroll 10-31-2007, 12:03 AM Still perfecting my GIMPressionist oil technique. The trick is the blending of canvas and rendering (selective erasing) to give it the desired dimension. Added some Dynamic Range enhancements (via a Script-fu) as well as some Tone-mapping blends. :) Alcar 10-31-2007, 06:24 AM Ikroll, your efforts are really bearing fruit. I would love to learn more on how you are achieving this excellent effect.
Janet, nice photo and fine work on your interpretation.
Alan Swampy 10-31-2007, 06:25 AM Janet, Fantastic photo!! I should knit you some mittens to keep your fingers warm as a thank you for this one. Well done.
AHB and HB. I thought this just begged for a soft watercolor treatment. Janet Petty 10-31-2007, 06:36 AM Janet, I should knit you some mittens to keep your fingers warm as a thank you for this one.
Ahh Gee Thanks. Blush. I'll spin the wool. Seriously, the gloves just make it harder to work the controls on the camera and adjust the tripod. But thanks for the sentiment. It is appreciated.
Great work so far on a difficult photo. Let's see some more.
Janet Alcar 10-31-2007, 07:11 AM Had to take a stab at this one.
Alan lkroll 10-31-2007, 07:12 AM Thanks for the comments Alan. Sort of outlined the technique here (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1006&message=25421317) (but I keep forgetting to add that I also used Bumpmap filter). :) palms1 10-31-2007, 07:16 AM Nice photo Janet sorry about the cold hands, you need to get swampy to knit you some fingerless gloves then you can still work your camera then
I too have used the ahb on this one
Palms Swampy 10-31-2007, 07:51 AM Excellent, Palms! Another great painterly look. dkcoats 10-31-2007, 09:50 PM Janet - beautiful photo; thanks for the play. Lyle, Palms, Alan, Swampy - these are all great.
Did mine in PainterX with Den's brushes. Tune-up and texturing in CS2. palms1 11-01-2007, 06:50 AM Thank you Swampy and dc, And great renditions everyone
Palms Marinpix 11-01-2007, 09:53 AM I found some mittens at REI (http://www.rei.com/product/746128?vcat=REI_SEARCH) that the fingers and thumb pull back to let you do fine work. I always take them with my gear when it might get cold.
John oltenius 11-01-2007, 10:33 AM Very nice picture and versions!
I used dodge, burn and color adjustments.
Dan GerryB 11-01-2007, 12:55 PM This is my first attempt after installing Leopard. I had to do an "erase and install" so I had to reinstall and configure all my software. What a pain. There was something wrong with my Tiger setup that wouldn't let me do an update. At least I had all my data and stuff on my two external drives. Steve Conway 11-01-2007, 01:11 PM Sketchy...foggy....chilly......wonder if there are trout in that stream.
Steve C. Peter S 11-01-2007, 03:04 PM What a great picture thanks for posting.
Hope I ain't spoiled it.
Peter Photomaster 11-01-2007, 08:27 PM Terrific photo Janet! Did this with an Infrared filter and AHB. chillin 11-03-2007, 11:04 AM Just playing around with IR & water color filters. Janet Petty 11-03-2007, 01:10 PM I've just spent time looking at each entry in this thread. There are some amazing renditions. I admit to being disappointed in the color saturation of the photo. It sure didn't look that bleak to my mind's eye. However, it has been very worthwhile to have posted it and having watched the transformations. I'm pleased you all like one of my favorite places to shoot.

Palms GerryB 11-03-2007, 07:18 PM I second Palms sentiment!! Kraellin 11-04-2007, 04:55 PM mother nature is still the best painter, and certainly the most prolific. thank you, janet!
some amazing renditions here. oltenius, i love that high contrast, dramatic rendition!
mine is sort of a chalk... sort of :) Kraellin 11-04-2007, 05:41 PM and a little filter forge 'chipped glass'. Mal Firth 11-11-2007, 11:31 AM Spent ages playing with this, and now I can't remember what I did ;-( CathyH 11-11-2007, 01:55 PM Thanks Janet for sharing this great photo.
Criag I like both of yours, the one with the emboss is neat, becuase it is only in selected area, and the other one I love the colors and the honeycomb look.
Mal, yours turned out great, a really good impressionistic version.
Here is mine. Swampy 11-11-2007, 02:22 PM Really pretty, Cathy. The mist and the water are so well done. cardmnal 11-11-2007, 02:49 PM I have been pretty busy as of late and haven't had time to post :tired: (I have been lurking a bit ;) ). I couldn't resist a shot at this great photo.
here is a bit of a water color.
Alan Janet Petty 11-11-2007, 03:18 PM WOW, ya'll are doing some very nice work on this foggy morning. I just love looking at everyone's own special interpretation of the same scene. Keep up the great work.
Janet Ziaphra 12-10-2007, 10:03 AM Ok..last one...promise! :) alexmeta 12-11-2007, 12:02 AM Wonderful photo, Janet.
Couldn't resist.
Photoshop CS3 Art History Brush Mining Art 12-11-2007, 01:09 AM The one by lkroll is really nice. You can almost feel the heavy paint texture that makes up the painting. For mine I added a little more fog and did a oil paint effect, then converted BW square format. Peter S 12-13-2007, 02:41 PM Quite like that B&W Mining Art.
Messing about with textures with mine.
peter alexmeta 12-14-2007, 12:40 PM Another one AHB palms1 12-14-2007, 12:49 PM Another one AHB
That is excellent Alex
Palms alexmeta 12-14-2007, 03:07 PM Thank you, Palms.
I like this work too. Janet Petty 12-16-2007, 09:47 PM WOW, some really great artwork has come out of this picture since I had a chance to sit down at a real computer. Thank you all for sharing your work. You have made my day.
