Wanted to go further into the retouch, but I've got a funeral to attend in the morning; so there will be some inconsistencies. I still had fun playing with the photo...thanks for sharing!

In the Dave Hill thread a couple people asked me to post an untouched photo.

Been staring at this for too long, probably missed a few things but anyway. Cheers for the image, was fun to work on.

Prizo,
AHA, I see now..

Sorry I mucked with your picture then!

Took it down because it was a JK..

What would you like to see done with it if you are not trying to emulate anyone (Dave Hill)?

Such a cool image to play with. I really love the dark images. BillFrey and Edgework...great versions. The enhancements really added to the creepy effect.

Prizo,

Whatever you want. This is for you guys to practice on, if you want. Its basically straight out of the camera and is, probably, a little different then the usual. Plus it has some nice challenges like the acne.

I've already edited & finished all my shots from this session. This is an outtake that I won't be using... so go crazy with it!

Hi Jimmy

Nice work... Would you be kind enough to share your tecjnique/workflow?

Paul

It's no secret (as they all say :) ).

I did a modest Lucis Art Sculpture on selected parts of the image (midtones), and lots of contrast adjustments on selected parts of the image. I think most people try different filters and adjustments on the whole picture all the time. It's important to pay attention to different parts of the image and try to visualize what is needed to be done. I also switch between RGB and LAB mode. I find LAB mode better when I want to create strong colors.

By the way.. I'm not sure you would need Lucis. There are tutorials on how to achieve simillar effects with free tools and Photoshop filters. One thing about Lucis if you have it: it's sooo sensitive. Be sure to remove all dust and imperfections on parts you want to modify with Lucis (Noise Ninja/NetImage/Noise Reduction in Photoshop). Otherwise it will stand out, as you can see on some of the other examples in this thread. Just a note...

Jimmy can you give an example on how you selected the midtones? Did you use magic wand with the shift key? How was lucas art able to work with just the parts you selected?

One way is to do Select -> Color Range....check the Midtones box.

For even better control.. create a B/W duplicate (duplicate layer and then Desaturate) ... pick a neutral grey as forground color... then do Select -> Color Range and drag the slider to determine the amount of midtones you want as selection. Throw away the B/W copy and then apply the filter of your choice on the original layer. In the same way you can select amounts of highlights (use white as forground color) and shadows (use black as forground) for other nice tricks.

JimmyAnother way:

Gradient Map Adjustment Layer
Edit Gradient: Black at each end, white in the middle.
Adjust sliders to focus on the desired range.
Select All.
Copy merged.
Paste into an alpha channel.

(Don't forget to kill the gradient map layer).

I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to paste into an Alpha channel and also find where it is at. Can you post the steps?

I'm having similar issues, but to answer scottyb's question Go to channels palette, click create new channel and paste.

But I want to know: When I paste to a new Alpha, then I load the Alpha as a selection, go back to the original layer, and the Lucis Art, it doesn't seem to honor the selection, and does a global processing instead.

So I tried loading selection as a new layer, and then ran Lucis Art, but the deselected areas come out as plain white instead of transparency. What am I missing?

That's correct. You have to mask things out, using a Layer mask based on a specific tonal range. Apply the filter, load the Alpha selection, add a layer mask. Also try to blur the mask a bit for smoother transitions.

Ok I am still having a problem here. This is what I did:
1) I opened up my image (background only)
2) I duplicated it then went to the channels pallette and created a new channel
3) It went to Alpha 14) I clicked on Alpha 1 to highlight it blue and I tried to drag it over to the layers section (nothing happened)
5) So I went to Select > All and with the Alpha Highlighted blue and nothing else in the channels pallette I clicked Edit>Copy
6) I then went back to my Layers Pallette with a BackGround Image and a Background copy.
7)The Background copy was highlighted only and the I clicked Edit > Paste
8) Now I have Backgound - BackGround Copy - Layer 1 with a black square in it and my Layer is set to Normal.
9) Now my image is covered in black what is next?

Am I doing this the right way?

So here is my result, I'm happy that I'm a little close to Dave Hill look but at the same time I'm a little sad because now I Know that it's all about lighting and I don't have any equipments to achieve that look. Anyways I did this with Lucisart plug-in just use the sculpture mode step 1 mix 55. Just that not any layers, dodge/burn thing etc. Hope you like it :)
