What is the best plugin or stand-alone application to use to cut a large poster-sized image into smaller pieces (8.5 x 11) so that the tiles can be printed on a standard home printer?

Hey Lorenzo. I've never used Rasterbator myself, but I have heard others who have. I did a quick search and found it at the link below (well, I hope it's the right one; lol)

You could try Poster Buddy or Mr.Poster

I tried Rasterbator and was not happy with the results. It insists on reseting an image's dot density as it slices up the image into tiles. This could work for small images but the effect is very poor for large ones.

You can also try:

1 image size set to 300 dpi

2 show rulers (inches)

3 put guidelines at 8 1/2 X 11 then 17 X 22

4 crop image at 8 1/2 X 11 and save as image 1 or upper left

5 back in history and crop to the next area of image and save as image 2 upper right.

6 continue with cropping the 2 bottom arears and print all 4 images to your printer.

sometime a littel overlap is better so you can line up your prints better.

I've use QImage (http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/) with good results. I have the Studio version which is 89.95 and which I use as my primary print program. You can also sharpen, enlarge and print different sized images on one sheet of paper. It's been called a poor mans' RIP. I think the only difference is that there's no printer drivers, so I've been told. There are less expensive versions if you don't need all the bells and whistles.

If you have the Creative Suite, you can save your document as a PDF, then in Acrobat Pro you can opt to Tile the printout and set the overlap to suit your needs from the Print dialog box.
