View Full Version : Need help on restoring My mothers photo coraki 11-24-2007, 06:32 AM Hi All
I'm new to this forum and have no idea on how to restore photos
all help would be greatly appreciated in restoring the attached photo HroadhogD1 11-24-2007, 06:48 AM I'm sorry, but I do not see an attached photo. coraki 11-24-2007, 07:12 AM The photo is now uploaded
Thanks klassylady25 11-24-2007, 07:46 PM It's much to small to work on. Could you post a photo at 100K please.

I am strictly a novice in this area, but wanted to give it a try.
dc Kraellin 11-25-2007, 12:01 AM have we all forgotten the resize tool? :) (btw, i used bilinear, not bicubic on this one)
try this one. since i'm allowed 200k per image, this may be better. philbach 11-25-2007, 03:32 AM I used the initial 20 K photo which is much too small as already mentioned. At any rate the blue channel was gone so I started off using the Apply Image command in Photoshop to restore the blue channel. After that other color adjustments. I would advise to look at the the various channels in RGB and CYMK modes and use Apply Image or possible the channel mixer to restore the color. coraki 11-25-2007, 04:36 AM Klassylady is correct that small pictures are difficult if not impossible to work on to get really satisfactory results. Hi DCobb
Since I'm new to this forum I have no idea on how to even begin to
try and restore photos and think you have done a great job on taking the cracks out of the photo especially the big piece in the forehead, the hair I'm not to sure about and I thought the the eyebrow was a little thick Your input is very much appreciated
I have uploaded three attachments of my mother
copy of the orgininal resized by Kraellin
Lee Clare2 was done some years ago which is good but I did not like the way the blouse was closed in around the neck, Lee clare4 was also done a few years ago but I was not real pleased about the skin tone.the hair style is a little differant than the orginal but liked what was done .
The photos I'm sure would need to be resized
I know I'm most likely being to fussy about detail but I do really appreciate all the help an input in to this photo coraki 11-25-2007, 05:30 AM I used the initial 20 K photo which is much too small as already mentioned. Hi Phil
Your input in to my mothers photo is much appreciated, I like the colors you used you kept the hair looking much like the orginal I know the big piece missing from the forehead would be hard to work with, it is a little smuged making her look like she has a bit of a pug nose.

and hope you and all will continue to work on it
I'm a little excited or should I say over excited to see the reponse I'v got from my mothers photo
You are all great people philbach 11-25-2007, 08:49 AM Well thanks coraki and welcome to retouch pro. This site is loaded with folks who are really good at retouching. There is a lot of discussion that could be had about this photo since it has so many exciting problems. Another problem I noticed with the photo was that is was loaded with jpeg artifacts. These really messed up the photo. So when you work on this photo, be sure to scan it and save it as a lossless file like photoshop or Tiff. chillin 11-25-2007, 09:38 AM I like philbach approach. I think introduction of blue helps the picture. philbach 11-25-2007, 10:09 AM Yes, Chillin I agree. Nice work coraki 11-25-2007, 10:53 AM I like philbach approach. Hi Chillin
I really like the work you have done on my mothers photo and I noticed what looked like a part of the arm of the chair you have taken it out showing my mothers arm only, I like that.
I did notice that the face was a little bit white washed in some areas
but over all you have done a great job and it is very much appreciated fotargento 11-25-2007, 01:22 PM Hi Koraki
I think you will do it better using the original whit canals, levels, clone and colours klassylady25 11-25-2007, 01:29 PM After working with the 200K, this is what I came up with. The skin tones are something that I still work with, but getting closer all the time. coraki 11-25-2007, 03:18 PM Hi Koraki

Hi fotargento
Thanks for your input to my mothers photo much appreciated
I though the hair could be worked on a little bit as it looks to have a ting of green in it , you have acomplished more than I know I could
Thanks coraki 11-25-2007, 03:32 PM After working with the 200K, this is what I came up with. The skin tones are something that I still work with, but getting closer all the time.
Hi Candice
This one I'm really pleased with I think the skin tone is very good.
The background I thought could be a lighter color and my mothers hair was more a light brown than the dark black klassylady25 11-26-2007, 09:00 AM When you say lighter, what is your idea of lighter, for the background and now that you've spoken about her hair I think I understand that she was a light brown (brunette) and I know what direction can be taken there. Let me know what you think. Alison 11-27-2007, 01:01 AM I decided to play with the image .... I should behave more :ditsy: fotargento 11-27-2007, 03:06 PM Hi Coraki

Hi Candice
I really like what you have done with my mothers photo
At first I was not used to seeing my mother with really black hair but I still like it .
This one with her hair brown is great At first I was not sure about the Gray background but its my mother I needed to focus on and I think you have done wonders with her coraki 11-27-2007, 04:41 PM I decided to play with the image .... I should behave more :ditsy:
Hi Alison
At first when I clicked on her image I had to smile and wondered what my dear mother would of thought seeing her hair spiked out like that, but I still like your work its great. Thanks coraki 11-27-2007, 04:46 PM Hi Coraki

Hi fotargento
Yes I like it a lot its great thanks philbach 11-28-2007, 03:24 AM Well you did fine. I thought though that there may be too much yellow in your restoration so in photoshop I used Image/Adjustments/Variations and added more blue to the photo. Also her front tooth has a dark spot in it still that you may want to fix. Alison 11-28-2007, 04:18 AM Hi Alison

Hi Coraki,
I was going to go a little wilder, but I restrained myself  fotargento 11-28-2007, 07:32 AM Well you did fine. Hi Phill,
thanks for your advice I appreciate very much. I agree on your adjustments who well improve my restoration. Maybe the yellow sunlight of Sardinia, where I live, influences my colur vision !
Fotargento lcramer53 11-29-2007, 04:47 AM I wanted to give this a try too. I used my aunt's hair from an old late 20's, early '30's photo. Not sure how any of the colors will appear due to my monitor/video card acting up (if Santa reads these threads, make a note 'new monitor and video card for Susie').
Oh, and I didn't give teeth to her, I believe that those 'lines' were natural creases of her lips which kind of gives her that "Mona Lisa attitude". At least, that's MHO. And I created a gingham pattern set as an overlay because I saw the pattern in her top; I really should have done some warping to that layer but didn't have time and didn't mask-out the chair either. coraki 11-29-2007, 10:57 AM I wanted to give this a try too. Hi Susie
I really love the look you gave my mothers photo with that hair style and and closing the mouth I think you have done some great work here lcramer53 11-29-2007, 12:00 PM Your comment is very kind Coraki, thank you. By the way, Allison, I love the spiked hairdo!!! Kraellin 12-05-2007, 11:50 PM no time to explain right now. mostly my standard work, anyways. HILDA WOOD 12-06-2007, 05:32 AM You may already know this, but if you could persuade someone to buy you a copy of Restortion and Retouching by Katrin Eismann for Christmas, it will be the best tutorial book you could own for learning the techniques. I bought it, and have never enjoyed learning so much, take a look at it on her website and at the before and after contributions from her readers www.digitalretouch.org
Ali lcramer53 12-06-2007, 08:53 AM Craig, as usual, another beautiful restoration. Kraellin 12-06-2007, 08:39 PM thanks, susie :)
this one was a bit frustrating, not because of the work, but because psp kept crashing on me near the end. so, all my work on the end job kept getting lost and i had to pick up and start again. normally, psp is fairly stable, though i do keep my auto-save on. and that being said, i turned my auto-save down to every five minutes instead of the 15 i normally keep it at. good thing there wasnt anyone from Corel in the room with me, either ;) Flora 12-07-2007, 10:32 PM Great job everybody!!!!:thumbsup:
Great picture to 'play' with....
I worked on the smaller size because I wanted to keep the 'crispness' of the image .... Unfortunately, with any kind of resizing something gets lost...
I also opted for a softer vignette to minimize the hard, cut edges.. Kraellin 12-07-2007, 10:39 PM nice, flora :) chillin 12-08-2007, 12:29 AM Very nice Flora. Great color harmonies. |
