Anyway thanks. I, as you know, removed the left horse from the original. I then layered it over a photo I took on a farm. Then it gets a bit vague. I believe I used both Buzz and Virtual painter to give the painterly look.

Since yesterday, I've been in a sketch mood (maybe a binge; not sure; lol). Trying some new ideas with GIMPressionist and DCSpecial's ICE4 filter and (with layer blending; some erase throughs) got this result. I think I might have a formula for a 100% true sketch effect rendering (no erase troughs, clones or brushwork), using just filters and layer properties, but I have a few issues that I need to resolve. If I do, I'll post that procedure. :)

I was messing with Painter X's Auto-Painting palette - or maybe it was messing with me, I don't know which.

Anyway, by reading the HELP topic I discovered that one can record a stroke which can be saved, then selected from the AP Stroke menu. I thought this interpretation, based on a recorded stroke of the Smart Stroke Brushes > Acrylics Captyred Bristle variant turned out kind of interesting...

I sort of like the basket like look on the horse head Danny. Also, I think this idea can be tweaked to give a 3D ribbon effect (like Echer's wrap I believe) using a single motion maybe; don't know Painter, so I can't respond to that. :)

Anyway, by reading the HELP topic

That was a strange thing to do, obviously a more advanced technique, I haven't got that far yet in most software :lmao::lmao:
( actually it was the first thing i was told to do when i got a pc by a computer geek friend "read the help files the answer is there ")

Yeah... reading HELP is not one of my strong inclinations! More of a last, not first resort. :)

In some ways Painter is like Photoshop in that there is a lot of underlying not-well-documented functionality that one sometimes stumbles into. Typically it's not difficult to apply the effect; the challenge is understanding all the controls, options, etc.

Experimenting is much of the fun!

OK Folks; just can't seem to automate sketch or anything without doing selective erasethroughs, but this one is pretty much all plugins. I started out with GIMP's Edge Detect Neon, Dupped, and then ran GIMPressionist with Graphite_2 preset (defaults) set to darken. I then blended that in and flattened. Then I dupped and ran Xero's Mystifier filter. I amplified (http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/topic/The-ama-ing-Grain-Extract-Merge-is-cool-too-26322-1.html) the effect (note; did not use ACE as the example but used Xero's Mystifier and amplified that effect), and flattened. I then dupped (three layers) and ran Cybia's Eliminate Black filter and ran GIMPressionist with Furry preset (moded by setting to transparent canvas) and adjusted the opacity of the middle layer to taste. Now I selectively erased around the face of the horse (the only non-filter step; didn't like the frayed edges) and flattened. That's it. :)

...That's it. :)Now That's a recipe.
