View Full Version : Christmas Baubles Ornament Snow Globe challenge palms1 12-07-2007, 07:30 AM Ok something a bit different, no photo to artify but a sort of challenge
As it is nearly xmas ( you have noticed Dougs decorations at the top of the page )
I thought we could make our own baubles and post here.
There is a action here for a sphere which could be made into a bauble ( works in ps6 upwards (Ok SteveC))
http://www.chainstyle.com/free_actions.html
A tutorial here http://www.tutorialwiz.com/xmas_ornament/
lkroll has done a bauble already here
http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/photo-art-mini-challenges/4667-photo-art-mini-challenge-64-jake-joey-4.html
(sorry if i have beat you to the punch here Lyle)
Just found a tutorial for a dreamy winter scene
http://myphotosoft.com/creative/winter-dream-3.html
so make a bauble with a xmas theme or what xmas means to you and post OR any other decoration you can come up with, also post any more actions/tutorials that you find (as well as too the library )

* Snow globe: http://www.escrappers.com/snowglobe.html dkcoats 12-07-2007, 09:07 AM Okay, I'll go first.
I did this several years ago, actually, for the company Christmas card. I tried adapting existing ornament photos to my evil purposes but wound up creating the thing from scratch (except for the gold hanger thingie (must be a word for it)). I have, of course, completely forgotten how I did it. The rest of the image is a photo I made.
I realize the context won't make sense to anybody; it's pretty much an 'in' joke. Godmother 12-07-2007, 10:33 AM My turn :)
Also a company xmas card :)

Everything but the photo machine and the bg laces was drawn in photoshop.
A year ago :) palms1 12-07-2007, 10:42 AM Dc that is cool and i think thingy is a brilliant name I have done a couple with the spherize action but trying to make a thingy now ! ! ! !
Godmother that is very cool love the top part of the bauble, I do mean the snowy/frosty bit (as well as your thingy)
When i get round to posting mine they are not going to be close to both of yours but i will have enjoyed myself and have something to learn for next year ( there may be questions)
Palms lkroll 12-07-2007, 11:25 AM Yes you did, but still needs to be done. It's Christmas by golly. Looks like all's quite on the DPR's front (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1006&message=25924631), but I'll try to post another one here soon. :)
Edit:
Well I already did this one recently as a response to Jan's thread on Innographx. Here (http://www.innographx.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=109118#109118)'s my response. :)
http://www.innographx.com/forum/download.php?id=21975/christmas_bauble.jpg patriciakay 12-07-2007, 02:03 PM Great idea Palms...hopefully i will find time to do a thingy this side of Christmas....Cant wait to see yours i heard a rumour it has snow involved???
Dc...Very nice...you must have had lots of time and patience.....
Godmother....Its a great company Christmas card...a lot of work in that one ...hope you did it in working time!!!!
Lyle....I love this one ......the leaves look great in the thingy(actually its a bauble)....
Patricia...........:dizzy: lcramer53 12-07-2007, 02:32 PM Palms, what a fun project idea! I can hardly wait to see yours!
 DC, Godmother and Lyle, definitely can tell that you guys are the pros! Mine isn't, but I just had to join in the fun and I did!! palms1 12-07-2007, 03:38 PM Well i think you are going to be disappointed here, as all i have done is a sphere using one of Paricia Kays photo's.
The darn thingy (hanger) had me beat i couldn't make one that looked as if someone over 5 had done it, ! ! ! ! :heul: but i will try again ( and i did try cheating but that didn't work either )
Lyle I like that one a lot
Susie that is great and you made a thingy (hanger) (can i bribe you to post it ?) Dont stop there try some more
Palms patriciakay 12-07-2007, 03:46 PM Hi Palms...
My snowy trees look good in your sphere...I like it ...just need the thingy and maybe you could find one in a clip art or a scrapbooking place????Never needed one before so sorry cant send you one!!!
Susie...Its really good and i like your cheeky snowman!!!
Patricia..........:classic: lcramer53 12-07-2007, 04:52 PM Palms, I think yours is beautiful!! I don't understand what you mean, "..bribe you to post it"? I thought that my 'thingy' really sucked, but, had to get going. I just used the directions from that 2nd link that you mentioned at the tutorialwiz to do the whole thing. Let me know what you're talking about to post, ok? Great fun everyone!
Thanks Patricia, you are very kind. ;) And your snow trees are fabulous!
Edit: Palms, I think maybe you meant to post the "thingy". I saved its 2 layers as a gif, but, I had used drop shadow on it and it might not work for you. Let me know if you want me to save it without the drop shadow. Cheers! lkroll 12-07-2007, 10:03 PM Used some roses for the reflection of this orb. :)
edit:
I should have said, I used some flowering cabbages that Patricia posted on another thread. Sorry about that (well they look like roses anyway; lol). :)
edit:
Arggh; it is a rose afterall. Man, I thought it was a flowering cabbage. I really need to lay off the Diet Cokes. lol.
:) lcramer53 12-07-2007, 10:20 PM Lyle, you are SO inspiring!! Your work always amazes me. lkroll 12-07-2007, 10:28 PM Thanks Susie. Been playing for several years now. I still am learning things. This hobby amazes me for sure. Just play and figure things out and learn from others. That's how I learned. Not really a learn from a book guy; I tend to learn by playing. :) palms1 12-08-2007, 03:01 AM Used some roses for the reflection of this orb. :)
edit:

lkroll you "rock"
Palms lkroll 12-08-2007, 09:20 AM Thanks Palms. I should have made more facets to be closer to the type that we had on our tree, but it came out pretty cool anyway. Real simple to do using Unpluggeds Tangent Deformation filter and the Bauble procedure that I already outlined. :) Cassidy 12-08-2007, 10:23 AM well I am in Christmas trouble heaps, going too slow for some and others just expect, no christmas baubles yet, reckon tomorrow is the day but only one to appreciate is away till Friday, bluddy sport palms1 12-08-2007, 01:56 PM Thanks Susie that was what i meant ( i made baubles from that tutorial last year ok but this year can't do it )
still having issues with the thingy(hanger) but i think it is a time issue mostly any way here is another sphere, hope to see some more here
Palms DannyRaphael 12-08-2007, 03:13 PM Added a link at the bottom of the 1st post for a "snow globe" effect using Elements or Photoshop.

Some great creations so far. Well done! (ho-ho-ho) lkroll 12-08-2007, 05:06 PM Took my effort from this post (http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/photo-art-mini-challenges/6838-photo-art-mini-challenge-150-wine-rose-5.html), made it seamless and created this Bauble. Now I really either got to stop, or see a Pscychologist. lol
:) lkroll 12-08-2007, 08:44 PM Some great creations so far. Well done! (ho-ho-ho)

Palms patriciakay 12-09-2007, 02:23 PM Palms....
Lovely globe...great winter scene and i like your Santa and sleigh too!!!
Fun to do as you will see by my efforts below!!!
Lyle...Dont you dare stop sending your great and imaginative artwork and you can get in the queue to see the Physco man!!! Ah but now they do have ornamental cabbages in many colors and i guess the rose having the tinge of green on the petals made it look a bit cabbagey!!!Your second one is lovely !!
Mining art...very nice...... kind of abstracty colors...looks good on a tree!!!
Thanks for the link Danny!!!
Now for my attempts with a hand painted thingy on each....the snowman was from a pic i took of some of the tree decorations last year(it was a rainy day!) I did that in Project Dogwaffle Pro...so easy just a click and its done!
Into photoshop and i then attempted the thingy painting(oh not good)...Added some stars with a brush....my second one i did from one of my fractals in the same way as above...You can have a good laugh anyways!!!
Patricia..........:) palms1 12-09-2007, 02:44 PM they look great Patricia the first one very festive and the second one very classy
Your thingy (hanger) looks ok a lot better than mine did ( but i have got susie's now )
Palms patriciakay 12-09-2007, 02:56 PM Palms...

Patricia............:dizzy: lkroll 12-09-2007, 03:04 PM I really like that second one Patricia. I'm just linking this one since I did this on Innographx. Only click if you like elephants. :)
http://www.innographx.com/forum/download.php?id=22003/elephant_bauble.jpg patriciakay 12-09-2007, 03:08 PM Lyle its lovely...
I really like the design and colors and you have a proffesional thingy(hanger).....
Patricia.......... lkroll 12-09-2007, 04:36 PM Yes, I stole,uh,er, borrowed my thingy from this image (http://www.flickr.com/photos/waxident/318973989/). I did some cleaning (not complete; kept some of the silver for a guide to cloning in your details as needed). Attached is that Thingy as you called it (with transparency of course). :) patriciakay 12-10-2007, 02:32 AM Lyle...
Thank you so much for the early Christmas pressy...will try use it...you know i am not brilliant at layers...ha ha...
Patricia........ palms1 12-10-2007, 08:39 AM Using lkroll's hanger i had the bauble thing sewn up so what do I do go and Hide it
If any one wants to know here is the tutorial i sort of followed for the card ( bet you cant guess why i changed the tree shape )

Has anyone tried the snowglobe tut ? Only i got a bit lost on it, but will give it another try
Palms summerz 12-10-2007, 03:28 PM Wow everyone's are so pretty.:bigthmb:
I made this several years ago, it's a bit primitive but it was fun:blush:
I didn't have a hanger *thingy back then so I stuck it in a branch lol.
Perhaps I will try to make some new ones and see if I can figure out that Snow globe.:dizzy: palms1 12-10-2007, 03:52 PM Wow everyone's are so pretty.:bigthmb:

Palms Peter S 12-10-2007, 05:00 PM Very quick one from me.
Found a background - Distort/Glass/tiny lens, made a square selection, Distort / Spherize masked out the corner bits, added a THINGY (made one up my self).
Merry Christmas to all By the way. CathyH 12-10-2007, 05:25 PM HI Palms, I had fun with the link for the chisrtmas card.
and I'm working a globe too.
Summers, love the colors of yours
Peter, yours is very real looking.
Ikroll very imaginative, I really like the pink and green one.
Patrica, I love the one with the neat pattern. grannysdc 12-10-2007, 06:56 PM Anyone want actions for the Snow Globes?
The action by Dave you use an open picture and the action works on a copy of it just size to fit..
The action by Nicholas you drag your picture onto the Action and size to fit...
Is this cheating?

Also cool snowglobes Granny palms1 12-11-2007, 07:17 AM Nice one Peter, and you can go to the top of the class for making your own thingy :pleased:
Nice card CathyH it is a fun reasonably easy one to do, except for the tree how did you do yours ?
Granny great snow globes and great links and it is a definite NO actions are not cheating
Ikroll thanks for the link it is a good one and I have utmost respect for CSpringer clever man ( and a member here)
Just had a thought will start another thread for other xmas images so we can keep just the baubles /snow globes here
I have some other links to tuts etc

Patricia......... Peter S 12-11-2007, 02:45 PM Peter...Sparkly...thats nice....did you make your fab thingy from a candlestick?....just curious!
Patricia.........
Thanks Patricia
Well it's the first time I've ever been asked how to make a Thingy!
No it's not a candle stick it's a Drawing pin - you know one of those ones with the plastic head thingybobby bit that you use to push em in and pull em out. I just removed the pin, distorted it a little and recoloured, then added a little texture, for realism.
I like both of yours - the second one more though - nice texture there.
I'll stop blethering now and get back in my corner. :dizzy:
Night night.
Peter palms1 12-11-2007, 04:23 PM Patricia those are real pretty my favorite of the two is the first one, gorgeous.
Peter i think you mean a "push pin" patriciakay 12-11-2007, 04:34 PM Thanks Palms....you have got me really at the Christmas things now and ideas are coming...in reality i should be writing and posting my cards......
Goodnight from me too...
Patricia.........
Thanks for the link Lyle........ Peter S 12-11-2007, 05:38 PM Peter i think you mean a "push pin"
I knew one of you youngsters out there would correct me (AGAIN) :dizzy:
Peter Mining Art 12-11-2007, 07:35 PM Thought I would try a faceted bauble. JOY NOEL lcramer53 12-12-2007, 07:28 AM Have been out of power due to the ice storm, really, really lucky to have power back on, 1/2 million people are still without it. Looks like everyone has been busy with this thread and very creative!
Patricia, seeing your creations has made me really interested in fractals now.
Granny, I love the snowglobes!
My ornament here was created using one of those tuts that Lyle linked to, and I used the same hanger/topper that Lyle pointed us to as well. :) The puppy is my own little sweetie pie. palms1 12-12-2007, 09:49 AM Mining art a very neat bauble
Susie glad you have your power back on, Feel so sorry for those who dont, We have seen some footage over here, not very nice weather at all
But a really nice bauble/dog
Palms lcramer53 12-12-2007, 10:39 AM Thanks Palms. One more try... this is too much fun! I used the same tut for the sphere and then used custom shapes for the shapes. sharynideas 12-15-2007, 05:57 AM Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and thanking you for a year of help and advice from the forums.
The whitish ornament is made from a sign that we pur on our fence each year. Lots of layers and texture using lighting effects. The bluish ornament contains a shot of our house. The "thingys" are from Lyle's post.
Shari Janet Petty 12-16-2007, 10:54 PM You all have replaced my sadly lacking Christmas enthusiasm with this WONDERFUL thread. Thank you all for your joy and sharing. May the season bring you warmth, peace, and happiness.

Palms, what an amazing idea. Simply sweet. I started to try one with my favorite modell (my cat) but while processing I realized that it was simply getting ridiculous since he is not what one would call skinny, turning him into a bauble shape just made him look awfully fat, so I gave up. Enjoyed looking at all creations anyway. Wishing you all a very Merry X-Mas and a happy New Year. grannysdc 12-17-2007, 11:42 AM Very clever Palms,
Beautiful presentation,
Thanks for sharing! summerz 12-17-2007, 02:32 PM Great idea Palms, and thanks! lkroll 12-17-2007, 03:38 PM Fantastic Palms; down to the snowglobe toppers. You get my vote. :) sharynideas 12-18-2007, 04:16 AM Great work, Palms.
Did you plan ahead to do this with the thread, or did the idea just pop into your head after seeing all the baubles? It is such a priviledge to be able to "play" among all you creative people. Merry Christmas.
Shari dotnicui 12-18-2007, 04:46 AM This is my Bubbles for a travel event at new paper. CathyH 12-18-2007, 05:44 AM Palms that is wonderful, I love it. It really pulls the whole thread together.
cathy palms1 12-18-2007, 07:33 AM Thank you all, It was a idea that i had a couple of days ago, thinking that after all the work done here it would be nice to see them on a tree
Ikroll I had wondered where to put the snow globes and what to top the tree with and bingo it worked
dotnicui thank you for your contribution and please accept my apologies for cutting you hard work in half so that i could fit it onto the dressed tree image
Will have to start thinking of a thread for easter next, unless there is a celebration some where else in the world that i am not familiar with :D
