The author says it is based on a tutorial that is posted at photoshop tower, And yes i hunted it down ( i think )

http://www.photoshoptower.com/tutorials/earth-portal/abstract-photoshop-tutorial-filter-effect-pretty.php

Oh, what fun... Brilliant concept and great find!

Since I have a custom Brushes palette the action bombed each time it tried to select a brush I don't have, but no problem. I just picked an available brush, applied strokes and clicked Play to proceed.

On mine I colored it via a color spectrum Gradient layer set to Overlay.

I'll be playing with this one for awhile! :)

The colour gradient is a brilliant idea looks great( of course i tried it ) also added the custom filter to this one It has crossed my mind to wonder how it works, but you know what I am not going to look and just enjoy it

Still messing around with this tried different colour for the background instead of black but it reverts to black, but for the doodling i have used different colours and that works ok

the lilac on this spells palms cool isn't it.

This is way better than fractals and so open to original creativity. I can't wait to try this. Thank you for sharing.

Not so much abstract as downright surreal methinks
So with that thought, how could I not have a try at it.

For the colour used a gradient map and set blend mode to colour.

Thank the lord it hasn't turned out looking like a frog eh Palms?

I couldn't download the action so followed the tute then just a little twiddle here and there.

But enjoyed anyway. Try messing with blend modes on the dupe layer - exclusion seems to give a little more detail, well to my eye anyhow.

Thanks for the Email Palms.
Certainly takes some of the thinking out of this.
Just could not help tweaking though.
Used Vivida plug-in to boost the colours.
Added an emboss layer - Yes Redfields again.
Then an Invert AL set blend to Luminosity. and this came out.

BTW started with a message saying "Hi Palms", and the next bit was a scrawled Palm tree on an island.

Merry Abstract Christmas to ALL

I'm sorry I had to do this. it was too tempting.

Instead of starting with a blank layer, I used a picture. Sorry Swampy I borrowed one of yours posted here :-
http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/photo-based-art/20010-creative-interpretations-rock-formation.html
(Now before you check out the original, have a go at guessing what it was.)

Then I did almost followed the tute, But only one Radial blur, then the Distort wave bit (tweaked), Duped, flipped and blend mode changed.
I also messed with the colours to boost them a touch. A few other thing as well, but I was trying so many things and blend modes I can't remember it all.

Any how it came out looking like an extreme close-up of a giants head to me.

I'd love to see some other goes at this sort of thing.
I was going to start a new thread for it, but it was Palms's find so I posted here.

Wow Peter that is super, can you also see a person standing ? quite surreal ( think of the dark bit in the middle as a body etc)

Will have to try a picture not thought of that one and no I can't guess what it could be ! ! !

By all means start another thread and repost this it will be very interesting to see other ones

Glad to hear you don't cheat. Not that I thought you had of course.
Well I decided not to start a new post, as you probably realised by now.
But I've attached a small Action file for you to try on an image. (Better than any tute)
Let me know what you think.
Open to anyone else of course as well.
