And Can do Control/U and Lighten but can only do a vary little, or the whole picture looks Faded.

One way is go to your layers pallet, copy background, look at the top of the layers pallet where it says "normal" change that to say "Screen" the image should brighten, adjust the opacity if needed or if it is not light enough you can copy the screen layer and the image should brighten again.. if some areas are to bright and the shadows are fine then use a mask to hide the bright areas from the screening process

When you are doing your adjustments through curves, levels, or whatever method you choose set the blending mode to luminosity.You will adjust the density not the color.Set your color adjustments to color and you won't affect the density or darkness.

New layer set to luminosity or change color mode to LAB and work on the L(ightness) channel.

Frogger, Hue/Saturation (Ctrl-U) is not meant for this kind of lightening. You simply need to use Levels (Ctrl-L) and adjust the midtone slider. See if this helps you, before investigating the more complex solutions suggested by other posters.
