Hello, this is my first post, im glad to have stumbled across this nice forum, some really useful hints on here.
I thought i'd post a retouch i did last week, its pretty heavy correction wise from very bad photography but i didn't want to completely wipe out the skin detail etc.
Any comments would be great.

I am just a novice and maybe shouldn't even be making a comment.. So, please keep in mind this is all just my observations and might conflict with the look you were going for and is only constructive criticism..
overall you kept the texture and detail. The sepia look looks good..
Lets start at the top..
Things I would have done,
Pluck stray hairs in eyebrows esp at bridge of nose..
Lighten the Iris to separate it more from the Pupil of the eyes
Get rid of hairs cutting ear in half and stray hairs sticking out on other ear
Models left side of nose even out the deep line at crease
models left cheek get rid of dark veins or marks
just above models right nostril smoothed scar and dark spot
where you removed mole on models right side it is lighter than surrounding skin and just under that there is a dark area at the smile line that needs lightening
get rid of scars on both sides and across chin and evened out the chin whiskers and if the model wants facial hair .. maybe thickened it some
All these things are just minor fixes which would probably go un-noticed by most.... If you achieved the look you were going for .. then you did an awesome job!
It is all in the eyes of the beholder.. and my eyes are OLD!
Have a wonderful Holiday season

thanks very much some really helpful stuff to think about, the client was happy but you've pointed out a loads of thing to think about, im pretty sure they didnt want a too perfect image but its definately good practice. And i'll have a go with some of the things you said and see it comes out.
Happy holidays.

Even if you don't want to edit the picture too much there's still a few more things I would have done... Mostly get rid of those 5 pre-puber hair sticking out of the chin and under the nose... Theres some dark spots on the skin that could be evened out. Give the cheeks a more pronounced bone structure with a little shading and highlights work. Lighten the eyes and fix the eyebrows like granny said. You could also make the jaw line stronger as I believe it's one the things that help alot when airbrushing guys.
If you want to modify the face more, shorten the chin a and fix the nose a little.

thanks for the advice, been playing a little bit more today just for fun, but still working on a few issues that have been pointed out.
