Could someone please give me a hint/help in figuring out what sort of editing is required to get a photo to look similar to the attached. I really love this look but can't seem to figure out what is going on?? Thank you in advance!

The whites are pretty well blown out, but this photo has been selectivly sharpened.

Time...the older I get the closer I come to getting this look without even trying....

Thank you in advance!..depending on the original you are working on, I'd use either levels or Curves to boost the contrast, and USM to increase the sharpness...

An explanation, an example or link to an example would be much appreciated.. :)

I know of a dragan(ize) action but, if I remember right, it creates a completely different effect...

another way to get this effect is to take a very mild contrast photo sharpen it, then duplicate the layer then use the multiply effect to bring out depth, and go from that.

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions they all helped very much and although I can't get things perfectly like I want it, I'm on the right track and just need some practice. Here is a very helpful link I thought I would share if anyone is interested.

Try "gradient map" with black to white, set layer to overlay and adjust opacity till it fits :)
