... and I promised a very old friend I'd fix his face.

http://68.178.131.224/wefixpix/clown-1.jpg

I tried to find a similar (or even identical) clown face on the net to work from, even had it posted on a clown blog, to no avail.

Looks like I will hafta reconstruct it from scratch.

Hey, I like a challenge, but I think I need some help with this one! I'm actually a good restorer, but I'm not much good at drawing.

Any help of any kind would be greatly appreciated.

(Hint: The blue channel contains the most face remnants, FWIW.)

Thanks,

OlProfBear, this clown's face is no laughing matter (sorry, couldn't resist).

I simply selected the left side of his face, copied, pasted, and did a horizontal flip. Created a new layer and used the clone tool to fill in the gaps.

This is a quick and rough rendition and simply a starting point to give you an idea of the approach. Obviously there is plenty more work to do.

Good luck, I look forward to seeing your end result.

Yes, thanks, that got me started. I copied the left side of the face, then flipped it over and did a transform to make it wider (he's not quite facing the camera). This came out pretty well, eventually, so I did similar things with a few other fragments, building up the picture gradually. It's required some rather unusual maneuvers here and there, and some things didn't always work the way I thought they should, but I finally got this far:

I also did a bit of preliminary work on the nose and hair. Still need to bring the eyes out more. At least at this point, I suspect I have a clue as to how they were made up.

Still working on it, of course. Any further suggestions?

I found the most information in the blue channel, so used that as a template and then just tried to work the elements in, quite a bit of cloning, not sure what else to do with the face and hat

I'm going to tell you guys something right now, Flickr or a facsimile' is a great place to post the original size. You can always give us the small version to view through here but a link to get the full size version. Would make gaining detail so much easier. This one wouldn't be that hard but it's so small to work on.

2 cents worth.

I like yours Bear. Have you thought about running levels?

Thanks.

Planning to do that, among other things, once I finish repairing the clown.

Oh, and here's a "progress report", with swiped eyes:

Go in and work on your levels. That's about all. Suggestion is to make a level layer, then go to the red channel and bring the arrows in on the left and the right, just to the point that the information starts. Do the same on the blue and green and I think you will see that it looks fresher all the way around.

Just a thought.

I don't think I can really do any more with this. Would be nice if I could get a bit more depth in the face, but it seems to have reached the point of diminishing returns.

Incidentally, the jpgs I've posted are quarter-sized, and the final output will be an 8x10 color glossy photograph, with circle and arrows, and a paragraph ...suitable for framing. I ran off a test print on my HP deskjet, and it is not half bad, but I want to go with a wet print on this one.

Thanks, everybody, for all your help!
