View Full Version : Smoking Rose - a series rab3rd 02-26-2008, 06:31 AM I have been working on a series of shots. Over 500 shots taken these are the best of those in my opinion. Enjoy and please add your comments if you feel so inclined. Good or bad, feedback is how we learn......
www.scatteredlightphotography.com Swampy 02-26-2008, 06:56 AM Rob... Those are just fantastic! rab3rd 02-26-2008, 07:04 AM Thanks Swampy....I have been absent from here for awhile...havent really had anything to share as of late.... palms1 02-26-2008, 09:22 AM those are really nice Rob, I wish there was a way i could identify each image ( there may well be but i havent noticed) as there are two where i think the smoke should billow out a bit before it goes up (both seem to be at the same horizontal angle ) and i could also say which is my favorite
But a really nice series :bigthmb:
Palms Ziaphra 02-26-2008, 09:25 AM These are great! I didn't go thru the whole lot...did you have any colour ones...? If not, then I think a touch of colour would be great. If there are, then ignore me. ;) rab3rd 02-26-2008, 09:25 AM Thanks palms1, they are numbered 1-7
Smoking Rose 1
Smoking Rose 2
etc..... CathyH 02-26-2008, 12:15 PM Rob, those are really neat. How did you do it?
and I agree it would be nice to see some color, or would that take away from the effect?? rab3rd 02-26-2008, 12:24 PM Thanks Cathy, the effect is not nearly as dramatic in color. Sorry but I dont have time to explain how I did it right now. I will try to do that tonight at home. I am at work right now. Ziaphra 02-26-2008, 12:32 PM nvm......... CathyH 02-26-2008, 01:03 PM Ziaphra, that is great. Hi.

Smoking Rose 1
Smoking Rose 2
etc.....

But i want a garage now,
another question did you take one of just the smoke for a stock photo ? that could come in very handy ! !
Palms rab3rd 02-26-2008, 02:34 PM Palms if you hover your mouse over the little thumbnails for a second it will tell you what the file names is. Starting from the left the first one is Smoking Rose 1, then the next one is Smoking Rose 2...etc......I have hundreds of just the smoke. I started out just shooting the smoke to get a handle on the lighting. Then I added the rose. rab3rd 02-26-2008, 03:32 PM I hope you don't mind me taking the liberty Rob! Such gorgeous images! Would you mind telling us how you went about getting them...?
Actually, I kinda do. I couldnt see this at work because it was blocked by our firewall. I didnt post these here with the idea that they could be redone. I am not mad or trying to be an A-hole. If it is expected that any image post here is free to be manipulated then I am sorry. I will not post anymore that I dont wish to be manipulated. Again not upset at you or anything but since you sorta asked.....
Its a good edit though...... MatthewMarshall 02-26-2008, 04:23 PM hay rob, i totaly understand how you feal, i hate people taking my images and re-editing them. Unless i ask them too. So dont feal bad and no your not an A-hole. lol. just next time you post pute a small line that says please dont edit the images.
Its like taking the mona-lisa and repainting her with teeth Ziaphra 02-27-2008, 12:32 AM Actually, I kinda do. I couldnt see this at work because it was blocked by our firewall. interesting setup...i noticed you have more bikes than i do, are any of those 29'ers? rab3rd 02-27-2008, 04:58 AM interesting setup...i noticed you have more bikes than i do, are any of those 29'ers?
Nope, no 29'ers. Two Racer-X's, One Airborne (road bike) and a couple of frames on the wall. I'm too short really for a 29er to be practicle 5'6". The frame geometry seems to suffer a bit when they try to make em small. Not to mention it just looks funny... rab3rd 02-27-2008, 05:01 AM No worries...all removed.
Thanks Ziaphra. Just so you know I have posted stuff here specifically for others to edit. I just spent a lot of time on this series so its kind of a personal body of work, if you get what I mean. palms1 02-27-2008, 05:28 AM Palms if you hover your mouse over the little thumbnails for a second it will tell you what the file names is. No need to do that. When I got home last night I took a look at the page with my 19 inch monitor and you cant see the thumbnails. At work on my 20 inch monitor you can see them. I am going to adjust the gallery. check back a little later, maybe in 30 minutes or so..... rab3rd 02-27-2008, 05:36 AM try it now.... palms1 02-27-2008, 06:17 AM Still no thumbnails but the fourth image in goes smaller (not thumbnail size) as do the ones that follow

I dont know what then. It works fine in IE. All the pictures are the same size and the thumbnails are present at the bottom of the main picture. No one else has said they are having any problems. I guess that doesnt mean they arent, just that no one has said so.......
If you go to:
http://www.scatteredlightphotography.com/Webshots
then you can look at the files one at a time..... palms1 02-27-2008, 06:38 AM I had a rare thought cleared out the "private data" incase that didnt help, and hey presto it is working now tumbnails and all
Back to the business in hand now number 3 is my favorite of them all
the ones that i said about the smoke not looking quite right (strange really when the smoke is actually doing that) are numbers 5 and 2
Palms rab3rd 02-27-2008, 06:50 AM Interesting. My favorite, if I had to pick one, is number 7. Thanks for figuring out what the problem was or I would have spent the rest of the day thinking about it.... CJ Swartz 02-27-2008, 08:23 AM Rob -- very cool concept and execution!! Using your second link, I really liked the colored smoke by itself also -- "tricolor" and "red & green". Also the "hard knocks" cat, of course. (Palms, be sure to check out that link ;) )
Thanks for sharing -- might get some of our creative juices perking! Ziaphra 02-27-2008, 08:28 AM Thanks Ziaphra. Just so you know I have posted stuff here specifically for others to edit. I just spent a lot of time on this series so its kind of a personal body of work, if you get what I mean.
Nope...totally understand hun. pixelhunter 02-27-2008, 08:59 AM Great pics Rob.
What kind of smoke is it? rab3rd 02-27-2008, 09:02 AM Thanks. It's incense smoke... pixelhunter 02-27-2008, 09:06 AM Thanks. It's incense smoke...
Ah, thanks.
To me, a headache-inducing smell, heh. MatthewMarshall 02-28-2008, 09:31 AM Ah, thanks.

Or a good sign your teenager is trying to cover up the greens. Had my buddy just have that trouble. His teen was burning insences in his room thinking his dad would be stupid not to notice. Kids! Of cource this is totaly off the subject of the forum.
Quick question, what is that you have over your flash. it looks like a homemade difuser out of a milkcart? rab3rd 02-28-2008, 10:18 AM Its a cardboard box formed into a square tube, open and uncovered on the end. Not meant to difuse, meant to direct the flash and keep it from spilling onto the background. Its a Southbeach diet premade meal box...... MatthewMarshall 02-29-2008, 05:31 AM sweet! nice idea |
