After you create your black and white sketch, use the dodge tool on the shadow areas to knock back some of the "skritchies" in the trees and cage area. This will leave the line art detail in the chickens and simplify the overall look of your art. It will help put the focus on the birds. Then I blended back the original and some smudging.
