View Full Version : Old Man Revisited

Two or so years ago, I took pictures of this gentle old man as he tended his cows. Two years have past. He is still tending his cattle by hand, using his old hay fork from 1944. He is still waving and smiling at all the cars that pass so quickly and hoping that someone will wave back. He often forgets to eat and is rail thin with a bend to his back from severe osteoporosis; but extremely agile for someone so many years young. The cattle he tends are so gentle that they will come to the fence line for a friendly scratch or rub--no shying away with these bovines. Mr. Plumlee looks every day of this nearly 80 years. His mind is filled with a lot of nonsense that makes complete sense to him. I hope I'm doing as well when I reach his age.

The link below is to the original thread. Enjoy painting these new pictures. If you think they are too yellow. I took them during the evening's golden hour. The only adjustments have been to levels and some gaussian blur on #3 (the cow in the back).

Such a nice shot I didn't want to muck up the pixels to much, so I just combined some layer options

Janet, thak you for bringing back the kind old man.

I wanted to step out of my box a little on this and do a modern painting of an old man. Adjusted curves using the pencil tool to get the wild colors. Saved as a pattern, Sketch layer set to color burn over a PST with a hard edge brush with Impressionist turned on. Top layer PST with Impressionist off to bring back some detail

Great OlBaldy. I like the combinations you did here.

Be sure, I'll wave. Always do.

WOW Swampy, we posted at exactly the same time. Great "muck up". I always like what you do.

Ok, I hope I get this right. I'm not good at remembering what each individual person did. If I forget or slip up, don't take it personally. Tis just me.

Lyle: I like the India Ink. I think I would have gone just a tad lighter on the thickness of the lines. The Cheryl's preset is much better. I like that one.

Frank: Cool way to turn a gray beard black. Unique interpretation. Thumbs up with the HDR thing. How about a tutorial for a finished product from just one picture?

Steve: Three submissions are very individual. I like all three. The first one cross hatched; the second one with the squares is great; but the last one is Renaissance all the way. Great work!!!

Baldy: Yours almost looks as if you stippled the picture then put the colored version on top for effect. Very different, very unique. Your comments are very touching as well. Thank you.

Britsdad: I like the effect of the 1/2 sharp - 1/2 blur. It keeps me coming back to look over and over again.

Sylvia: What do I say? You took 15 years off Chester's face. Wonderful, marvelous and all without painful plastic surgery. Your smudge work is amazing.

Thanks all for participating. I'm enjoying the results here.

Janet,

I duplicated the image layer
Downloaded a trial copy of ReDynaMix HDR and applied these settings to the new layer. As best as I can remember...

Afterwards, I applied the Poster Edges filter that comes with Photoshop

Not as good as Silvia's , but I did one last time, so I couldn't resist one this time. (a smudge)
By the way this thread is getting to be as long and as good as the last one.
Very popular gadgie this Mr Plumlee....:)

Pavel: I like the mood you set with your rendition. And I like how the red streaks accent the rest of the piece. Good work.

Dkcoats: I like how the slightly stippled abstracted work still shows the pensive expression and the work worn clothing well. You kept the mood of the piece very well.

Frank: Thank you for the workflow and the introduction to ReDynaMix. That, I'm afraid to admit, I have never heard of. It does quite well.

LonK: Way too funny in a Van Gogh sort of way. It's a keeper for sure.

Kimlou: Your impressionist treatment of the hay gathering went well. Thumbs up.

Britsdad: Great smudge. I really like the treatment you gave. And you even managed to keep some of the stubble on the chin.

Thanks all for participating. This is lots of fun and learning for us all.

Palms, you even removed the fence. GREAT job.

Alcar, your rendition is wonderful. I really like the style and mood you created. Once again, I wish I could get Impressionist to perform as well for me.

Craig. I like the interpretation. It looks rough and sandy textured. It fits the face.
