Hi - I've just used the Backup facility in "Elements" (V6 running on XP) and tried to test the files by opening them directly (double clicking). While some of the JPGs open in "Microsoft Photo Editor" - others don't and give an "error opening file" message. There are 1600 images and it is difficult to trace the backup files back to the originals. Those I can't open seem to have come from a Canon EOS300D, and those I can from other makes. Now I've not tried to open many, and so this could be a "red herring".

Any ideas? Should I trust the backup? How can I test it?

Man, I just don't trust a program to make my backups unless it is a program specifically for that purpose. I'd prefer to do it manually.

I also keep a copy of the original images on another computer, as well as on a memory stick. So I have two copies as well as the originals. They now top 6GB and so a single DVD doesn't hack it (I've not bought an 8GB DVD writer).

As for the original problem - I've found I can open the files using another viewer. So it seems as though the issue is not one with Photoshop's backup - but with Microsoft's inability to read the file in the first place.
