Hi,
I want to buy an LCD monitor for under $1000, to do some freelance photo retouching and am wonder what the best make and model to get is.
The tech at work said the Apple LCDs are pretty good, for the price and can be calibrated easily. Does anyone else have any other suggestions?
I have a V7 LCD that I bought a few months ago and it's definately not cutting it in terms of accurate display.

Have you looked at the Eizo monitors? The URL is http://www.eizo.com/

These monitors are used by the Smithsonian and National Gallery of Art.

You get what you pay for and I can understand if you think that under, but near $1000, is a lot to spend for a good monitor, but it isn't. If you go Eizo, go with a CG model. Their other models, while nice, are not retouching type monitors. Look at the NEC2690UXI and their smaller, but same spec'd (or similar) monitors. Apple Cinemas are not, any longer contenders in the display market - old tech and never that great to begin with. Google monitor reviews to start and learn what types of things to look for. In any case, getting a good calibration device is a MUST no matter what monitor you use.

Ant is right about getting what you pay for. However the are some crossover points on on size and certain features where you ned to weigh the extra value for the large delta in price. The ket thing is to chose a unit that was designed for image editing. I have used Eizo and they are great. However if you can live with a 21" display and have a modest budget I would recommend you check out Viewsonics VP2130b. It comes with a Software Calibration tool called Picture Suite which does as good a job as a Hardware Colorimeter if you have a good eye. It costs about $700.
