Couldn't find which forum would be most appropriate.

I would like to add a realistic looking matte around my photos, like what you would see on a real photo frame.

Hopefully this process is automated or easy, as I have a digital photo frame, and I want to matte about 300 photos to fit into the 800x600 resolution that it provides.

Esac, if your in photoshop it's pretty easy. If you want to do all 300 at one time you use batch prosess. If you want to do them here and ther you could make an action for it. One other thing is (in cs3) you can make a droplet out of actions and put it on your desktop, now just grab the folder with your pics in it and drop it on the droplet, done.

I'm in CS3 and I am simply not seeing any option that will allow me to do this. Note that although I am decent at photo restoration, drawing a matte around an object by hand is something ive never tried.

Is this something like you have in mind?

Here's a simple method to add a matte

1. Use Image>Canvas Size to increase the size of your PS canvas area. Make sure that the RELATIVE button is checked and that the center of the grid is selected so that you increase outward from the center of your art.

2. Load the entire area of your artwork as a selection or use the marque tool to define the area of the original.

3. Add a new layer below your original and with the marching ants of your selection active fill with white then add a white stroke 2 or 3 pixels with "inside" option checked.

4. Add another layer below the white filled layer. Fill that layer with the matte color you want. Add noise or texture to suit your taste.

Hawkeye, yes, that is exactly what I am looking for! I would want to do a little less texture, and no rounding so that it fits nicely on my digital frame, but that totally rocks!

To get rid of the outside edge, flatten the image then crop out the rounded part.

flickr provides something like what I am looking for, for an example of the matte they produce see

I like how it looks like the photo is sitting "under" the matte.
