hi, i have been trying to emulate this effect for the last couple of hours bu twith no success, i can get close but there are some things that jump out at me about his, i noticed that the blue sky is now almost black which i can do when doing a black&white image but i don't know how he gets all the rich red colors, he also has some near whites in there too which i didn't when i attempted it, he actually gives a tutorial on his technique in this url (http://flickr.com/photos/joanot/2419367166/) but i have tried following it with no success again, any help here would be greatly appreciated!!!

That looks great! I'd also like to know.

His tutorial is a little hard to follow, so here's an english translation:

1. Duplicate the background layer. Set the duplicated layer blending mode to multiply. Lower the opacity of the duplicated layer to around 60%

2. Go to image->adjustments->hue and saturation and bump up the saturation to 34% (you might have to bump it up more)

3. Sharpen the image via the Dan Margulis method. (Basically apply a huge USM to the Lightness channel in LAB mode, then masking that to only the edges of the image)

4. Merge the layers, then apply the Fractalius filter. (This is a plug-in you can buy for Photoshop that does some interesting things to the picture. Google "Fractalius" to learn more.)

5. Clean up the noise with a noise-reduction filter like Noiseware.


That's about it. I tried it (except the Fractalius plug-in) and it works just like he says. Hope that helps.

i had another go at this last night and it looks as though he has converted his image to a black and white but his is like a black and red, i tried converting one of mine to black and white and then tried various things like gradient maps and different blending modes especially "multiply" blending mode but still fell short of the effect.

try the Midnight Filters from Nik Color efex Pro 2 and you'll get close..:+}
