Ok, I'm going to ask a dumb question... I seem to be the only one here who doesn't know how to do a screen shot...

How do you guys DO that???

I think just hitting "print screen" will copy it to the clipboard. From there, you should be able to do what you want with it. I'm not positive about the "print screen". It might be Alt+"print screen".

I have another tip for Screen Shots:

if you have several windows open in your Desktop, but you'd like to capture only one of them, just click on the one you want to take a "shot" of to activate it, then press "Alt+Print Screen". In this way you'll get the "shot" of what you want and not of your whole Desktop.....:)

But seriously, folks, I like a program called Fullshot. Bypasses the clipboard and offers many options. There are many other programs out there as well.

You probably already know, but to make a screen shot on a Mac, you have a few options built in:

1. Command+Shift+3 captures the current screen and puts it in a file called "Picture n" where "n" is a consecutive number.

2. Command+Shift+4 gives you a selection crosshairs so you can drag around what you want to capture - the resulting file is called "Picture n" like above.

3. Command+Shift+4 and hold down the control key while dragging around the selection keeps the selection in the clipboard and it can be pasted directly into your favorite program.

Can't let those Win folks get ahead of us hehehehe

To be honest Doug I don't know of a screen capture program for the Mac. Since they improved the one that is part of the operating system, that's all I've used.

Does anyone know how to get a screen capture of the cursor? My screen captures do not include the cursor, and sometimes I would like to include that in an image.

Actually I was using this before I ever heard of capture screen... I don't think it work's for mac's.

I have been using this nifty program (http://www.gadwin.com/) and really like it. It lets you capture in a few different ways, including the cursor.

Paint Shop Pro does several types of screen captures full screen, client area, window and object, and you can include the curser. You can download a trial version at jasc.com. Be aware that they are coming out with an upgrade soon. It is PSP 9. It has some excellent new features, You can try out the beta version. To do the capture you go to File>Import>Screen Capture and set the options you want to use such as including the curser. Dale

screen shot manicas may also refer to HardCopy, a nice gadget that brings up
a box you can drag across the area you want to capture.

A freeware program called Gadwin Printscreen will allow you to capture an area of the screen (via options) including the cursor, great little program and will allow save directly in jpg or quite a few other formats. Need to poke around the preferences for full options

Do a google search for "ScreenHunter" a free windows goodie. Very flexible and free - and captures the cursor optionally and free

I use a Windows program called SnagIt that captures screen shots and lets you add text, arrows, highlights and other kinds of annotations (including the cursor) in one program. Not free...but somewhat reasonable. FYI.

Also, I have a question. What do people think is a good final web size for illustrations? I am thinking that a fair amount of people have 800x600 pixel screens by now. Many of us have even higher resolutions - but it seems like 800x600 is the bell curve median screen size (what do you think?)

So... should my graphics be no more than 750 pixels wide to fit comfortably on many screens?

In the tutorial im doing on "That Soft Dior Magazine Look" im using the larger 400 to 700 pixel graphic sizes - and they seem like they are really big to me.

I wonder ...what is a principle to use in creating the finished size of the jpeg we upload for tutorials?

Doug, as Skip said in the last post of this thread, you'll want Snapz Pro (http://www.plugsnpixels.com/snapzprox.html). I use it for all of the plug-in screenshots on my site. You can capture with drop shadows if desired.

There are imitators, but Snapz is the best. The folks at Lynda.com and other pro training vendors use Snapz to capture their training movies.
