View Full Version : Epson 2450 scanner? jeaniesa 05-29-2002, 08:36 AM Since my current scanner died, I've been researching possible replacement scanners and have pretty much settled on the Epson 2450 - unless someone gives me a good reason not to! From what I can tell, everyone who's talked about their 2450 on RetouchPRO has been really happy with it. I'm just wondering if there's any "gotchas" that I should be aware of?
Thanks, Jeanie DJ Dubovsky 05-29-2002, 08:44 AM I have the 1650 photo and I love it. The only problem I have with it and I don't find it a big problem, is that it doesn't have a way to turn it off. It basically sleeps. I can't say if it's the same for the 2450 or if that's a problem for you. As Epson products go, I would buy any Epson with no hesitation. I think they make excellent products.
DJ G. Couch 05-29-2002, 09:55 AM The 2450 does have an on/of switch. For the price, it's the one of the best flatbeds out there and I would recommend it with no hesitation. The only problems I had was having to reboot twice to get the firewire connection to work (works like a charm now!) and, when I first started scanning slides, they had a slight Magenta cast. I started using the Silverfast LE software that comes with the scanner...that cleared up most of my color casts!
It's a fantastic scanner! T Paul 05-29-2002, 05:20 PM I love mine and I haven't found any gotchas yet. I also like the smart panel software that comes with it as I use my scanner for multiple functions.
The EPSON Smart Panel is the control center for your scanner. Whether you wish to copy, e-mail, scan, print, fax, or use the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software, etc., EPSON Smart Panel will interface quickly and easily with the connected devices and bring out the best in your work.
Once EPSON Smart Panel is open, you may access each of the solutions by clicking on its icon. As you move your mouse over the icons in the EPSON Smart Panel, a quick guide will appear in the Guide area at the right.
You can also customize EPSON Smart Panel to launch the solution of your choice when you press the Start button on the Scanner. The solution will run with minimum or no prompting.
ENJOY!
-T jeaniesa 05-29-2002, 06:37 PM Thanks everyone. I ordered it today - and it can't get here too soon!!! :D
Jeanie DJ Dubovsky 05-29-2002, 07:20 PM Don't forget to update us when your new toy arrives. Love to hear how you like or don't like it.
DJ jeaniesa 05-29-2002, 10:22 PM Have no fear DJ. I can't think of anyone else to talk to about my new toy who would actually appreciate it like you all would! :D
Jeanie Doug Nelson 05-30-2002, 06:42 AM An "out of the box" review would be cool. If you're feeling up to it, I can post it in the reviews section, or you can post it here as you feel like it. jeaniesa 05-30-2002, 08:22 AM "Out of the box review" meaning how easy it is to set up and get working, my first impressions, etc? I think I can do that...
Jeanie Doug Nelson 05-30-2002, 08:36 AM Excellent :) I'll let you decide whether it should appear in our Reviews section or if you'd like to post it in our forums. G. Couch 06-08-2002, 12:38 AM Still waiting for that shipment Jeanie? :D
I think Chris H said something about having to wait forever to get his 2450 as well...must be a world wide shortage. chris h 06-08-2002, 01:55 AM There is in the UK Greg my normal supplier who usually has the latest models has been only able to get small numbers and all are on pre-order. At this rate the 2450 will have been replaced !! jeaniesa 06-08-2002, 08:56 AM Yes, I'm still waiting. Latest word is that it will arrive at the store June 10. I don't really have high hopes of that though. :(
Believe me, you'll KNOW when I get it! :D
Jeanie Barry 06-14-2002, 08:06 AM Hi all,
I've just bought the Epson 2450 from Dabs.com here in the UK (their depot is 1 mile away).
I found it a breeze to setup. Because I use WinXP on both of my PC's I checked before purchase re it's compatibility. The Epson TWAIN driver was on their web site so I downloaded it, installed the driver and connected a firewire cable.
Within 5 minutes from opening the box I was scanning in a 645 colour slide with amazing results.
The auto mode is in itself impressive and the driver allows people to access the advanced mode where colour, rotation, size., etc., can be pre-determined.
As to its performance I have not crits whatsoever but why do our Stateside cousins get extra software? Another example of "Rip-Off Britain"?
Cheers,

Barry - Are you referring to SilverFast? jeaniesa 06-14-2002, 10:36 AM Perhaps they give us extra software because we have to wait so long to get one? ;) Just kidding...
Mine JUST arrived via UPS 5 minutes ago!! YEAH! :D Guess what I'll be doing this afternoon? ;) (No, Doug, I haven't forgotten that I promised to write an "out-of-the-box" review.)
Jeanie G. Couch 06-14-2002, 10:44 AM Cool Jeanie! Nothing is more fun than playing with a new toy :)
Feel free to ask any questions if you run into a snag. The only problem I had setting mine up was getting Firewire to work...other than that it was, like Barry said, a breeze! chris h 06-14-2002, 11:34 AM Exactly what software did you get with the US version of the 2450 Greg ? I've heard of Silverfast but its not well known over here.
Cheers........ G. Couch 06-14-2002, 12:46 PM Mine came with Epson drivers, SilverFast SE (http://www.silverfast.com/show/silverfast-se/en.html) , and I believe Photoshop Elements. (I now have 3 Elements disks from various bundles...don't remember where they all came from!)
The Epson driver is good but I found that I got much better results, especially with color negs, when using Siverfast. Barry 06-14-2002, 12:53 PM  Yes that's the one - couldn't remember the name as I typed. I know I can buy it on-line but $99? Why don't Epson universally include such useful software?:bawling: G. Couch 06-14-2002, 12:53 PM hmmm...looks like you can download the bundle version for the 2450 for free. Bundle download (http://www.silverfast.com/product/Epson/242/en.html) Barry 06-14-2002, 01:29 PM Thanks G.,
Got the download.
Barry:) G. Couch 06-14-2002, 01:35 PM Let me know if it works Barry. The more I look on the Lasersoft website, the more confused I seem to get. Looks like you can download a demo of the full version (AI)...a bundled version of SE, a non bundled version of SE...etc.. It's not the clearest web site...but I hope that download works for you!
They have a forum (http://www.silverfast.com/forum/index.php) as well.
-Greg Barry 06-15-2002, 04:20 AM Greg,
Got the download as a TWAIN and installed it. When I came to scan in an image it required a serial number - don't have one - so it defaulted to demo mode with the 'Silverfast' logo festooned all over the image.:depressed
I'm open to any suggestion (or offer).
Barry G. Couch 06-15-2002, 08:02 AM I wonder what Epson's explanation is for not including SilverFast in the UK? The included Epson Twain is very good...but it would have been nice to have another option. At least you can play with the demo and see if you like it...I think it's $49 us dollars. Not a bad price, but I guess Epson does not think it's UK customers could benefit from it.
Jeanie - Any first impressions? :) jeaniesa 06-15-2002, 08:08 AM Immediate first impression - IT's QUIET!!! In fact, so quiet when I'm scanning a slide, that I thought it was hung at first! I literally had to put my ear ON the scanner to hear the motor going.
I LOVE the quick scans I've done. I'm going to be working on comparison scans today (hopefully) - using Epson TWAIN, Silverfast, and Vuescan (assuming it supports this scanner) - and also compare it with my Minolta Scan Elite film scanner.
And of course, I'll compare using all three applications on a print as well. This is really fun! :)
