View Full Version : Some like it Hot

About 10 minutes ago I was online at Retouch Pro and I innocently rubbed my eyes. It didn't take long before the burning started and by the time I ran into the kitchen for some help I couldn't even open my eyes. Wow, talk about on fire. After several intense minutes at the sink I recalled that I picked up my husbands tootpick after dinner that he used to apply hot sauce on his meal. Even though I washed my hands there was still some residue there I guess. OH boy what a nasty suprise. :D

Now Dave loves things hot. The hotter the better. He could drink Tabascco with out blinking an eye. He orders his Buffalo wings with the hottest sauce they can make. So a friend of ours found this incrediblly hot sauce which just happens to be called DAVE'S Insanity Sauce and gave it as a gag gift to my husband. It's labeled the hottest sauce in the universe. He can barely tolerate putting a few drops on his meal, it is sooo hot. There is a warning on the label not to use more than a couple drops and at first I thought that was a gimic. It's real. If any of you out there like it hot and I mean ON FIRE hot this is the sauce for you. I found a website on the bottle and thought some of you might like to check it out. You can visit the site

If it don't make your eyes water, your nose run, and your throat constrict - in my book it ain't no good at all.

I had someone give me some Habaņero hot sauce on my birthday once as a gag gift too. I loved it, but it was still pretty tame in my book. Their site doesn't say what's in the Insanity Sauce. What kind of peppers is it made from?

No matter, if it's THAT hot - I WANT that hot sauce!

I love tabassco ... if for nothing else the flavor and smell... so over the years have bought various hot peppers for chili's and such....
be warned of that little small comquat sized green one that looks inocently enough like a very small green tomato..
it's enough to make a buzzard sweat..might be your sauce comes from this little gem.
does wonders for the chili ... at 3.99 @lb or so... you only want 5 cents worth..

anyway.. dry them tears and get back to work...

I'm familiar with "insanity sauce". One time I put a couple of drops on my tongue. BIG mistake! It's a wonder you have any eyes left at all! It makes my eyes water just to think about it. I like mine pretty hot too, but that stuff is unreal.

Sorry about your eyes DJ...I know how that feels!

My own painful story involving jalapenos is too embarresing to tell in a nice forum like this. Suffice to say, one should take care to wash one's hands thouroughly, both BEFORE and after using the restroom after handling jalapenos! :depressed (my wife laughed for many days...)

OUCH! Greg, if that hurt half as much as my eyes did, I do feel for you. :D I also probably would have laughed like crazy too.

It did take sometime to wash out and thank God I didn't get the full strength stuff.

Jak,
Here's the label but it really doesn't shed much light on why it's so darn hot.

At one time it was the hottest The original formula measures about 80,000 Scoville Units. To get and idea of how hot that is,
the hottest jalapeno is about 6,000. Habenero's are about 300,000 with one variety being over 500,000. The hottest sauce that I know of is called "Da-Bomb Final Answer" It weighs in at a whopping 1,500,000 Scoville units and not meant to be consumed alone but added to soups and such.

I can't help but sit here and wonder - Who on earth came up with a scale and named it for measuring the intensity of chillies? lol:D

DJ Dubovsky
06-04-2002, 07:51 AM
Cool, I didn't know they measured the stuff either. :D
Personally, I think people who like to feel pain when eating are crazy. :D I fall into the 100 Scoville range. Just a little spicy but no where near combustible. :D As for Da-Bomb, they can keep it. I don't even plan to mention it to Dave. Not after suffering an eyeful just touching a small bit of that stuff. Da-Bomb would have blinded me for life. :D

Well for all you crazy people who really like it hot here's two possibilities. Insanity or Da-Bomb. Have a blast. :D

It was in 1912 while working for the Parke Davis pharmaceutical company that one of their chemists, Wilbur Scoville, developed a method to measure the heat level of a chile pepper.

feelin hot hot hot

Not surprised this thread would be so popular.. I'm a hot sauce fan myself and I thought I was a bit of an excentric stocking usually 5-6 different types at any given time....

then one day I was in Ottawa and came up a lovely little shop that sells NOTHING BUT hot sauce. They even have a website http://www.chillychiles.com

From there I discovered there is quite a 'hot-sauce cult' out there. You can even buy a huge assortment on ebay...

me, I just like to keep a few different types handy for dabing on just about everything

Greg,

Only a woman would laugh at that! :(

We have 5 or 6 different kinds of peppers in the garden this year. Nothing like the A-bomb, but probably on the scoville index comparable to jalapenos. I like good hot jalapenos, and some are hotter than others. The super hot peppers I stay away from because they are so hot I can't really taste them. Hmmmm, I wonder if anyone would be interested in a recipe for jalapeno poppers?

They are stuffed Jalapeno peppers. Usually with some kind of cheese, breaded and fried. When I worked at a KFC back in the 80's I used tom make them for myself and the crew as a snack using white meat from the chicken. Then I would dip them in batter and roll them in original recipe flour before frying them. That was long before they started showing up in restaurants. I often wonder if that was a missed opportunity.

I like the ones with cheddar cheese in them. But the ones with cream cheese seem to be more popular with the general public. Amazingly, there's this little restaurant in the little town (pop. 1200) about 12 mi. from here that make the best ones I've ever had.

I worked for KFC when I was young too, but I never thought to make them like that. Man, I bet those were some GOOD poppers!

They were pretty good. I worked there for 2 years. I became quite creative when I got tired of everything on the menu. I worked alot, often gaining enough hours that I got overtime on my check. I did all that while going through high school. Somehow I still managed to find time to party. I wish I had that energy now.

I know the feeling. I used to party then too. Man, that was a fun time! My crew and I had this one party once...

Oh, nevermind - that's another story altogether.

I got promoted to manager though, so when we all got bored with the menu stuff we traded chicken for PIZZA!

OMG, that reminds me... I was just in Tennessee over Memorial Day Weekend to visit relatives. My Uncle, who was in the Air Force for 20-30 years had flown back here from Calif. early to meet an old AF buddy in Georgia for a guy's reunion. And when he got to Tennessee for our family weekend, he had brought a big mason jar of MOONSHINE with him!

Oh, Man.... It was really neat. I hadn't tasted it before. But seeing as how I was actually born in Kentucky, I figured I had to taste it at least once in my life.

It was killer! When I was a wild kid, my beverage of choice was whiskey (Black Velvet or JD), and bourbon was all good too. But this Moonshine was something else... It was smooooooth! And it's too bad it wasn't winter, because it REALLY warmed me up!

DJ Dubovsky

I didn't even see that one.

Jak,
I've had moonshine. Well, a wee taste was all I needed. That stuff would rank right up there with some of the real hot stuff. The alcohol content of some of them can run around180 proof. Wicked stuff. Just sniffing the bottle would put me out.

Any of you folks with a taste for hot stuff familiar with Korean kimchi -- fermented vegetables, etc. sometimes with chili powder added. I do NOT eat hot or spicy foods, but my former sister-in-law from Korea had a permanently red throat from her daily portions of kimchi. Just wondering how it stacks up to your really hot sauces.

Also wondering how red your throats are... Except for Greg. (gotta hurt!)

I remember it from the MASH series but never had the pleasure (displeasure ??) of tasting the stuff. Is it really that hot? I didn't know that. Wonder if Jeanie has tried something similar since she goes to Vietnam so often? Curious.

I have had it more that once and I don't know less than a million?
They have ranged from very good to very bad. One of the more interesting brews I had was somewhere around 190 proof, but the maker tossed a cinnamin stick into the jar before sending it out. It was a strong contender among anything you could get on the legal market.

I don't know if I could bring myself to drink any of it now, whenever I hear the word moonshine, I think about the first scene from "The People Vs. larry Flint" where the old man was so blind from drinking it that he had to hold the dollar bills about two inches from his face just so he could tell what they were.

This was my own thread and suddenly I was hungry for some good Tex Mex chili so I am making a big pot for supper. Yum Yum. I remebered my last experience and Greg's and used a spoon to scoop the chopped jalapenos in there. No way am I ever touching peppers or hot sauce again. :D Can't put the nasty stuff in there cause Mom has to be able to eat it. I leave that up to later additions.

My son wanted to order some hot sauce for his Dad for Father's Day after I showed him that page on Scoville ratings so in searching again I discovered this one. Who buys this stuff??? How hot is enough? This one (http://www.fire-spice.com/source.html) one is rated at 7.1 million Scoville Units For a tiny sum of $110 you can experiment with spontanious Human Combustion. I have really learned alot from this thread. What ever happened to the simple hot pepper? :D
