I love dogs. But I'm a cat person.

This got me wondering about y'all. Are we more dog people here, or cat people?

Most of the time...this is not a fair fight.

However, we had a tomcat when I was a kid who whipped all the neighborhood dogs.

Not a fair question :D. How can I say which (http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=15997) one I prefer? :cat:

Cat. No contest.

Mainly for the cleanup factor, although having my garden rows disturbed regularly is a problem of another sort (but more pleasant than scooping)

Actually, I have had both, and found that I am a cat person, so I just go with it.

Started out with 2 cats (brothers actually) that were more like dogs really. They were so affectionate. I used to wear the black one around my neck as a fur collar. He was like a lip rag doll when you were lovimg him up. The other was Siamese and would stand up and tap people on the shoulders to get the attention he thought was his due.

Then we went to dogs and have now have had 2 huskies. One at a time though. Which is the only pet we currently have.

Cats are definately easier to care for and you can leave them on their own for extended periods of time easier than a dog. Dogs tend to be more like having children. They depend on you for so much but they bring their own qualities to love in a relationship. I think I have to say I'm comfortale with both but at this time I'm raising a dog. Actually, I'm an out right animal lover. Can't imagine a world with out those furry, scaley, feathery creatures in it.

My "grand"dog is not the smartest animal by a long shot, but the other day, my daughter-in-law went out, leaving the dog at home and she forgot to raise the blinds so he could see out.

When she returned home, the dog met her at the top of the stairs grinning from ear to ear, clearly very proud of himself.

When she went into the living-room she could see why. The dog had chewed through the (NEW) blinds and bent the ends out of the way so he could see out. His s**t-eating grin was telling her "we had a problem, but I was able to fix it for you."

I'm not an animal lover, but that dog keeps me in stitches,

Have had both. As a (so-called adult) and living in an area of the country where it rains a lot during the winter, cats w/o a doubt cause much less housework. When I was a kid and more clueless than I am now, my mom was doing all the floor mopping, rug washing, furniture wiping, etc.

I'll agree that many dogs can be trained to do more, are more apt to come running when you get home and some like to play Frisbee (though I had a cat once who fetched), the overall maintenance factor isn't even close.

I would always have said cats are smarter but our pup Junior is proving to be quite smart too. Being a typical internet junkie, I order my groceries over the net and have them delivered. The other day when they arrived I was unpacking one of the boxes and saw Junior looking into the other box which was still on the floor. He found his bacon treats and took them to my son so that he could open them and give him one. He didn't touch any of the other groceries just his own treats. I thought that was pretty smart.
But he has another thing he does, my husband is a sweets junkie and has them by the handfull while watching TV. So every morning Junior checks between the cushions of the lounge for any stray sweets. He comes up with some most mornings. Now that's smart.

Like Al and others, I can't choose between my kids - currently 2 dogs and 3 cats, but my personality matches cats best. Dogs tend to enjoy/demand a wider circle of social contacts, and this is good for me, but I'm more content with a cat on my lap.

Cats are winning...I wonder if this says anything about retouchers? -- Doug

In my experience, my dogs want me to STOP retouching and take them outside to have fun; my cats are willing to let me stay at the computer -- as long as they have been fed, and I offer a comfy lap.

I love animals, period, but definitely more of a cat person. I'm not sure if it's how I raise them or just a blessing, but I've always had very affectionate cats.... like this guy here who happens to be the world's schmooziest cat. If you don't pick him up and make a big fuss when you come in he is like a dog.

We've got two dogs and now only one cat after we lost graham to old age two years ago. Allie cat is the only pet we actually got ourselves and is the remaining sister of two kittens we got "Kate and Allie"She is now 18 years old and still looks like a young cat. She is very aloof and only responds to me with any affection. The two dogs inherited from our son are ,Towser a"Staffy "and Zepalin a "Huntaway" are as someone previousely stated just another two of our kids with their good and bad characteristics,. I just know how devastating it is to lose a pet after having them for a lot of years, heartbreaking.love 'em all to bits

Well, I just love animals period.

I currently have a cat - Chester, a black & white tuxedo cat. And I love him to death. But I must admit I'm a dog person at heart. My old dog, Bud, had to be put to sleep a few years ago and I opted for a cat after that because it seemed easier than getting a puppy. I had Bud for 17 years, and it was heartbreaking to lose him.

Chester flat out refuses to wear a bandana, ride shotgun on road trips, play in the ocean with me, or chase a ball.

But, the ultimate choice for me wasn't an option. Horses have been my passion since I was old enough to say "horsee!" :)

I've always had both...cats and dogs and I've had horses as well...and...and...and..
In other words I just love animals!!! , but, like Lisa, even though my nature makes me feel more like a cat, i'd always go for a dog...I simply adore them....
I think cats are smarter...but dogs, usually, don't hold back in giving you all the love they are able to feel!!!!

Hadn't seen this before.

I'm most definitely a dog man.

Just can't see the point in having a pet that gives you no feedback and that you kick out of the house so it can be a nuisance to everyone else (cat).

With a dog you know where you are. Always on your side, always glad to see you. Sure the maintenance is a bit harder, but the best things in life always need working for.

Lastly, I've never seen a burglar avoid a house with a cat, whereas my 2 dobermans have kept intruders well at bay. Other houses around me have all been hit, but mine always seems to be the one they miss.

I think the hardest part of living with dogs/cats is knowing that usually they will leave us  I still have 2 dogs (same two but much older) and 3 cats -- but only one of the cats was with me when I first posted. Ginger lived to 20 yr. and Cupcakes to 17; they also had a dignified exit. Toffee and Pepper have joined Sunny to outnumber the dogs (even though it only takes one of them to make the dogs back off). ;)

That's for sure! I'm reminded of something I saved on the hard drive. Not sure where I initially found it, but it was worth keeping. Here it is:

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.

When a beloved pet dies, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills with lush green grass for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing ... they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers.

Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face. Your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

You then cross Rainbow Bridge together .....

I have two cats. One is autistic but sweet, she simply lives here and ignores us mostly. BUT Paxel (my anti-depressant cat) is a big fat gray cat with soulful eyes. I have a chronic illness and he knows when I am ill and when my throat is sore. He lies next to me, puts one paw on each lymph node on either side of my neck and does the cat massage, sometimes for a very long time, and sometimes (when really sick) every 2-3 hours even through the night if I am awake. If I flinch due to a touchy node he stops immediately and cuddles close and purrs. Clearly he does this to heal and console me and not for his needs. He is my hero!

I own a cat
Her name is Baby, because when we first got her and took her to the vet they asked me what her name was and the song baby love came into my head so I sang Baby Love oh Baby Love.
She is now about 13 years old but at times is still like a two year old.
I love dogs but can't have one, but if they had one that could take care of it self for a weekend and let it self out when your right at a great spot in a movie or tv show thats the dog for me.

Cats Cats Cats

I have been banned from owning a dog. I love them, I love the idea of owning one, but I suck at keeping them. I always end up training and selling. My biggest heart break was a white siberian husky named Thunder. He was dumb as a rock, but had a huge heart. He needed more room and more time then we had to give. We could see the happy light fading in his eyes. We sold him to a better home, but I will miss him forever. :bawling:

We currently have two cats. Spook (10 years old) and Ash (2 years old). For now and perhaps forever I will remain a cat person. But I am jealous of everyone with a loving dog. :classic:

I wish more people had your attitude, there's too many people with dogs whose lifestyle doesn't really fit with them.

My niece has a Ridgeback, which she "loves", but which is sorely overweight due to lack of exercise.

I'm just getting ready to take my dogs out for their weekly "long" walk, (10-15 miles), rest of the time its about 2-3 miles a day. Can be a chore when the weather's bad, but at least they're keeping an old man in shape.

Not a cat man myself, but for some they are the ideal companions.

I am definitly not a cat lover! They are a feral menace here, I care for orphaned and injured birds many of which were victims of cat attacks. Often I wish that similar council restrictions over here that apply to dogs were also applied to cats. Yeah cats are great predators and do enjoy the hunting and killing, its in their nature. I was working in the garage this afternoon and there was a young bird scratching around on the drive when it was taken by a cat and although I chased it I could not get to it before it disappeared so I am a bit sad tonight.

AS you might guess from my avitar, I am a definite dog person - although I like all animals, some just seem like dumb ideas for pets.

That picture is Franklin my 2 1/2 year old Portuguese Water Dog. This dog is my constant companian - right now he's sleeping under the desk with his chin on my foot.

On August 5, 2006 Franklin jumped into the water from my boat to save my life when I ran out of breath too far from the boat. REALLY! He swam 50 yrds in record time to get to me when he has never swam more than 50-60 ft at a time before this. He has NEVER voluntarily jumped out of the boat before because he can't see a way out of the water. The ONLY reason that I don't say that he DID save my life is because I had reached a sandbar and was standing on the bottom when he reached me. Otherwise, I might not be here.

Cats are beligerent ,know how to get what they want ,and they mysteriosly appear from nowhere with gifts ,--"its alright owner i kept this one alive just for you"--and cat food is cheaper --;)

...On August 5, 2006 Franklin jumped into the water from my boat to save my life when I ran out of breath too far from the boat....

That IS fantastic! You hear stories about dogs saving someone, but it must be great to know that YOUR dog wanted to save YOU. I'm not sure that either of mine would try, but I hope never to find out, either.

Gulp Friction -- I have both cats and dogs, and I think sometimes when I'm out with the dogs (walking them in the cold, picking up their dooty, waiting for them to get thru sniffing some other dog's dooty) that I wish they were more like my cats. :) Truth is, I like both cats' personality quirks and dogs' personality quirks.

As for cat dooty -- some years ago, I was visiting a neighbor who also had cats, but said she was having to clean up the backyard from other people's cats as well. I told her that I was glad that my cats didn't dirty her yard. Two minutes later, one of my cats started digging in her yard and proved me wrong... ;) :cat:

Cats rule and dogs drool  I have 4 cats at the moment and a dog.
I prefer cats because they can stay indoors . I have a dog because my brother in law died and the dog had nowhere to go so ended up with hubby and me. I once had 3 dogs and 9 cats at one time . No my house did not stink of cat litter even tho all the cats were indoors. I am meticulous about keeping the litter boxes clean.
