FIRST MINI-CHALLENGE?
See below for "Information and Guidelines."

Here’s another “mini-challenge” to play with in the Photo-based Art category until the next offical challenge is posted here (http://www.retouchpro.com/challenge/index.html).

PHOTO ART: Mini-Challenge #28 – OhThatGirl II

Mini-challenge #22 was so popular I asked Lisa (aka member OhThatGirl2001) if she’d mind donating another picture. Again, she graciously agreed and offered this stunning picture. (Thanks, Lisa!)

Let’s see what you can do with all that white background!

INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

Unlike “official challenges” for this forum which can be found here (http://www.retouchpro.com/challenge/index.html), this one will be self-contained within this thread. It is intended as an opportunity to engage in this artform until the next official challenge is posted.

The rules are more-or-less the same:
* It’s a challenge, not a contest -- intended to provide opportunities to experiment, share methods and/or techniques and, most importantly, have FUN.
* Everyone who participates is a winner.
* There’s no expiration date.

GUIDELINES:
1. Use any method, application(s), style(s) you like:
. * Convert to sketch, grayscale, abstract, watercolor, oil painting, pen-and-ink, Conte crayon, impasto, van Gogh or any style of your choosing
. * Add elements from other images (collage) or replace the background
. * Hand painting? Tracing? Freehand? You bet. Always appreciate entries of this nature.
. * Apply filters from your favorite application(s) or tweak it with 3rd party plug-ins
. * Feeling animated? A mouse scurrying about?
. * Any or all of the above

Bottom line:
How you create this masterpiece makes no difference. Whatever floats your boat as long as you follow guideline #4 in the process.

2. When done, reply to this thread and attach your work (don’t forget the 100kb size limit).

Note: Multiple entries OK if you’re so inspired.

3. By all means include some verbiage on how you achieved your masterpiece so others will benefit from your skills and experience. Make it as descriptive as you like. Grammar and spelling will not be graded. Priority given to content, not how it is written.

4. Have fun.

Lisa, what size is that outfit anyway, a 3? I never owned a size 3...went right from 6x to 12 I think. :)

First Lisa got posterized, then anisotropically diffused, and glows because of her radiant personality. Or maybe it's cuz of repeatedly applications of the KPT gaussian glow filter...I forget which. :)

The next one is based on this version with a color change and an addition.

She's fiery.
She's a she-devil.
She's Photoshopped!

three background layer copies, ran sketch action on one, and find edges on the other. Left original background layer untouched.

sketch layer above background, mode to multiply.

Find edges above that, mode to vivid light. Blurred.

selected white background with magic wand set high, on find edges layer. Copied and pasted. Ran hue/sat, set to colorize.

Lisa's beauty can hypnotize you! But just in case it doesn't, she brings along a special background to do the trick!

The background is halftone filter spun to smooth out jaggies.

My lisafire.jpg only uploaded halfway so only part was visible. I reuploaded it and it seems fine now. Wonder what sort of glitch causes this...it happens occasionally to several of us.

Anyway, if you want to see Lisa go up in flames :) look back a few posts and she's all there in a blaze of glory!

Wow, i spent a ridiculous amount of time on this. I wish i could say the steps i took but i really have no idea. I should really be doing my homework now, but this is far more fun. It doesnt look perfect, but ive never been very good at doing color correction and such, so this is better than i usually get. Learned alot of new features doing this one too.

Wonderful effects everyone! I especially enjoyed fiery Lisa and Mona Lisa.

Here's mine: my friend Mike trying his hand at colorizing Lisa.

Tools: Photoshop and POVRay (www.povray.org).

What a fantastic job everyone, just wonderful:) Here's my small contribution. I erased the bk/grnd of the original image. Placed it on a new bk/grnd I had on file. Merged. Applied Styles duotone blue, adjusted opacity. Ran MANY filters to get this result. Added a little noise. Frame PhotoImpact. Lisa, I don't know why, but I picture you in a house like this:) Thanks for this wonderful photo!!

C.J., your "Mrs. Peel" is a wonderful picture! Love the simple lines and the black shapes-- so simple, yet soooo effective. Just goes to show you that sometimes less is better. You have a good eye!

Wanda, Lisa in "her house" is a great pic too. Great composition, wonderful blend of textures, and an imaginative idea as well. Unlike you, I picture Lisa in a modern high rise apartment furnished with lots of leather and chrome. Maybe she will put our curiosity to rest and invite us all to a dinner party real soon. :)

Visual, what can I say? Once again you astound us with your creativity and skill! And thanks for the POVray site...my copy is downloading as I type this!

VisualEyes, I successfully downloaded and installed the free POVRay software but can't get it to do anything except open windows full of code! No pictures. And no way to draw any pictures that I can find (the "help" wasn't much help). And it keeps telling me to unlock "locked" folders (and all of them are) but I have no idea how. Is this a program for computer coders? This is way beyond me...too bad. Oh well, get what you pay for I guess...LOL!

But if you or anyone else knows of a site that explains how to make this program work for computer illiterates like me, please post a URL. Thanks.

Phyllis, it's great to get a compliment from you since your work is so good! I downloaded POV also, although I think I've looked at it before and gave up... Did you try the tutorial yet?
EXCERPT:

"3.1.1 Understanding POV-Ray's Coordinate System
First, we have to tell POV-Ray where our camera is and where it is looking. To do this, we use 3D coordinates. The usual coordinate system for POV-Ray has the positive y-axis pointing up, the positive x-axis pointing to the right, and the positive z-axis pointing into the screen as follows:"

Hmmm, I doubt that I'm going to figure this out... :)

CJ Swartz

Lisa, you have motivated a lot of folks to work with your images, and everyone is obviously having fun and doing good work! Wanda -- your impression of Lisa's home is lovely, and perhaps Lisa has the leather and chrome that Phyllis envisions inside. Lisa's pose does seem to be inviting us in... :)

It's a raytracer, not a drawing program. A raytracer is a metaphor of photography. The photographer (curious raytrace user) takes a camera (POVRAY) and shoots (renders) photos (2-dimensional computer image files) of something in our world (text describing 3D objects composed into a scene). POVRay, as well as other raytracers, can simulate realistic optical attributes such as reflection, refraction, specularity, shadows, texture, color depth, etc. POVRay uses a scene description language that is coded into text files which are then rendered into 24bit images. Another description might be "POVRay: Bryce without a GUI".

The initial learning curve may seem a bit high, but once you play around with some of the basic objects you can rapidly reach that "aha!" stage of understanding and begin creating some truly dynamic, blow-your-mind images. 3D objects can be mapped with images create simple stuff like balls and checkerboard (see attachment), or more complex objects such as heightfields can be imagemapped to create cool effects (see next post).

If this is a tool that interests you, my suggestion is to go through the packaged tutorial, visit websites dedicated to POVRay, and basically play around until you get the hang of it.

Ditto, CJ, on Visual Eyes' talents. To make those images with a user friendly interface would be amazing enough, but to "see" these images through numbers and code alone...wow!

Poor Lisa...VE has her being knocked around a pool table and Don did a great job of putting her in a fog! I'd be willing to bet that Lisa is NEVER in a fog, however. :)

MoonFizz -- nice look -- very modern!

ugot2bkdng -- you REALLY aren't kidding, are you! You just downloaded POV-Ray and started USING it??!! I know that I'm not the only one who downloaded it, and then whined about not being able to figure it out (didn't even try hard -- it just looked too difficult) :( Well, if you would like to give any hints to the rest of us, I know I'd love to know how you do it.

Your image is very eye-catching, and I really like it. To nit-pick, I think Lisa should have a shadow, and perhaps should even show part of her legs behind the table -- but that Boeing 747 didn't cast much of a shadow (another thread -- "Fun Images"), so I'm not positive. I'm positive that I like the look of the image, though! :)

Don't feel too bad. I have a PhD in Computer Applications -- Chuck

:D That DOES make me feel better! Thanks for the tip on opening a prepared POV. file -- I have the balcony rendering right now -- I've actually done something in POV! I've taken a look at the tutorial before -- I would probably need a tutorial to READ the tutorial, ;) but I may give it another try later. I just set up my first slideshow burned to a CD with the labels etc., and that took some figuring for me to get it right -- and that's like primary school compared to POV.

Again, thanks for the assistance. You fit right in here at RetouchPRO -- everyone shares knowledge and constructive opinions. Hope I can return the favor sometime.

the weather here in the uk is horrible...rain & gales all weekend.
My mom and sister have arrived for a couple of days and I've been busy cleaning and cooking and have not had much time on the "puter".
However I did manage this evening...(god knows what time it is now!) to upload another variation that I think is a little different.

Well Chuck before I read your background I guessed you needed a Masters degree to figure it out. I am know as the computer guru in my office but with that I felt like the village idiot.

I tried there tutorials but no where is there anything that tells you how to put your image into this program.

CJ Phyliss I feel so stuipid with that program. Two hours trying to figure out how Truman got her face in the ball. But I will figure it out or die. and when I do I will be kinder then Chuck or Truman I will give hints. Ha Ha.!

I was cruising through the mini-challenges and looked at all the great "alan's butterfly" pics. (Great work you guys!) I was tossing around what to do with those wings when I spotted the OhThatGirl challange. Ah-ha!
(I must admit I was inspired by Trine Simes butterflychild picture...nice photos on your website Trine!)

I started by copying the wings off the butterfly, cloning in some missing top wing bits and tranforming them (scale, rotate, perspective) to get them to look right on Lisa's body.

then I colourised Lisa including adding some wing texture to her dress and getting rid of the buttons. (Fairies don't 'do' buttons!) I also used liquify and cloning to "elf up" her ears a little. (I didn't really need liquify but I started out using it to change the shape of the wings to something spikier but decided to ditch that work. I'd spent so much time using it I needed an excuse to say I still did. So I tweaked her ears)

I used the smart blur (learned that from this site!) and then texturized a render clouds background that had been hue adjusted to yellow. I also saturated the colours of the wings a bit.

The text is from the dictionary. Just like Lisa herself - helpful and a bit supernatural in her photgraphy/graphic skills.

I will post this under the butterfly thread as well. See below for two other versions of this....I couldn't stop playing!

Helena

hmmmm...perhaps she should have antennae too?

Helena
11-08-2002, 08:46 PM
here is picture number two...just combined the first one with a photo of the woods. Changed the hue on the woods and saturated some bits of the trees. Gave Lisa an outer glow and drew in the light trails (with glow).

I like this one a lot. I would change the light trails a bit and do it on a nice smooth pen path next time.

Helena

Helena
11-08-2002, 08:49 PM
Here is the last one. Combined Lisa with two other butterfly pics (used smart blur twice) Cloned her into place and gave her a glow....had to mask a bit to keep the glow in the right places because of some flattening I'd done earlier. (I hate it when I do that too soon)

This was fun!

Phil:

This isn't an area of I'm particularly knowledgeable in, so I'm shootin' from the hip here.

The skin tones somewhat blotchy and a little too varied in tone. These were distracting to me.

I'm definitely OK on the rest of it, including the Lighting Effects which turned out very good.

If you haven't yet, check out this challenge (http://www.retouchpro.com/challenge/retouching/challenge12/index.html) for some colorizing ideas. Also Jak's tutorial on colorization (see Tutorials from the main menu).

A+... I'd say you've got this one nailed bigtime. Very, very nice. If you didn't, I'd submit this one for the official challenge. Definitely worthy of that.

RE: Upload difficulties / filesize issues
I use the FILE > Save for the Web... function. It gives an accurate value of filesize. Under 100KB, works fine. Often can do vs. no-go is a function of the "jpg quality" value specified.

As a general rule I can post an 8" by 10" image at 72 ppi with decent enough jpg quality.

phili -- excuse me for stepping in where you only asked for Danny's comments (but after painting that flying horse you saw during your last "night out", I thought we were friends ;) )

Your second effort is very good, and I can only see an itty bitty area around her hairline on her left side (facing image) that you missed and some green in her neck area - in the shadows (they often turn another color than the lit areas).

Your first effort looks like you were trying to apply some shading to her cheeks -- which really takes some practice, I think, since I can't do it right :) -- that led to the "blotchy" look. If we look at the images of models in cover shots, I think we can practice making the makeup look like that -- will take some time to get good, but should be fun trying!

Thanks CJ. I do not mind any comments. Dannys kind of helping me deveolp myself so I have a habit of asking his advise but all is welcome.

I do know about those areas, my main concern was her face , hair and lips, I tried something different for the background and did not spend time with it.
I have trouble with the selection tool in Photo 7 for some reason. I cant get it to select what I want.

In the past I never used layers, which was a pain if you made a mistake and it has opened a new door for me, I cant believe all that I didnt know, but I am learning.

Thanks for your help and please anytime just jump in, I do not mind people helping me.

boy, i havent seen one of those in a while, lk. one suggestion here, double the image size and crop it and then do the ascii art. you'll get more detail in the face that way. also, if you can use a smaller font that would help.

but yes, fun stuff :)

...I haven't figured out how to set fonts within RetouchPro. Other then Code (which uses a fixed font, and unfortunate fixed size too), you can not show fixed fonts within an embedded submission (unless you convert the font to a bitmap, which, to me anyway, defeats the purpose of this post). I agree that a smaller font would show details better. :)

Well, there is another way, but way too much work for me.

Some more play with ASCIIGen. :)

This is an old thread. All I see are the comments from years ago,
besides this new ASCII offering.

Where did the original picture go?

Where did all the submissions go?

lkroll,

ok, i changed my font in my browser to 50% of normal. but, as i suspected, that doesnt really help, since that wont add or subtract type already in your image. so, you get no new detail by just changing the browser text size or type. so, the only way to add more detail to your ascii art piece would be at the source.

and since i saw you were using potrace on another image, did you treat this image with potrace before converting to ascii or do any other treatments first?

...I just used the original photo; the Potrace version was completely different. ASCIIGen has a lot of controls for controlling and enhanceing the effect for ASCII conversion, but I just used the defaults. Again, I used Code to display the text. RetouchPro Code format is controlled outside the browser, so you have no way of changing the size. Thats the drawback, but the advantage is the display of fixed font. I guess you could copy the text and paste it in Notepad and change the font to a smaller one to see it better.

I also just realized that I did not post on this forum a link to ASCIIGen. Here's the link (http://go.to/ascgen/). I'm actually using an older version that does not require .NET, but I see that he's now requiring it. A bummer for sure.

And, for Craig, if you have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can view a 200 character wide resolution of a cropped version of That Girl here (http://bellsouthpwp.net/l/y/lylejk/that_girl.pdf). :)

used PSP9's sculpture filter with Neon Motion on the background, as well as Bubbles and Balls in an appropriate color -- the foreground is a combination of soft focus, find all edges, more soft focus, colorization and adjusting brightness and contrast.

p.s. Hope it looks ok ... I understand why, but that 100k limit means a lot of "optimizing" :)

p.s. Hope it looks ok ... I understand why, but that 100k limit means a lot of "optimizing" :)Sorry about the 100k thing and am glad you understand the rea$on$ for the limit. Fortunately with "photo-art" its more tolerable than if one was showcasing high end traditional photographs.

In addition to uploading their creations here at RetouchPRO, some members upload "full size/hi-res" versions to personal galleries, e.g., www.pBase.com, and paste a link in the message text. No problem doing this as long as the post includes the image, too. That way if the link breaks some day -- and they all do eventually -- the RetouchPRO attachment will survive.

Anyway, I like your creative instincts on this one. Very "out there" (in a good way).

This thread was recently revived by lkroll. Nice rendition with your ascii.

I add mine done in Painter 9, cropped to suit and did a high key sketch like effect !

I am quite happy with the way this one has turned out, and if the lady in question is still about, thanks for the pic and hope you like this one.

Peter,

Lisa checked in here late last year, so hopefully she will see this sometime. She's a lovely subject, and your rendition will be another for her to add to her scrapbook. :)
