(Let's see if I can figure out how to create a poll......)
Just curious about the ratio of men to women who are active in the restoration business.

I can't take part in this one Vikki because I'm not in the business. But I do restorations simply for the enjoyment of doing them.

I'm not active in restoration as a "business" (do it as a hobby for friends / relatives), but wanted to "vote" to give your poll some action. :)

Vikki

Actually, I didn't mean it the way I wrote it. I really only meant "interested" in photo restoration.

Aha! Now I've voted in the poll. :D

I have done retouching, and even some restoration. I do not consider myself in the same class as some here, whose work I have seen and admire. I feel that I am at the point where if I were to do restoration or retouching for a living I would have to devote too much time to the process. The hourly rate thing would bring my "salary" down to below minimum wage, IF that was the scale I used as a reference.

Hey!

I hear you need females!

I do restoration and manipulation for fun and I am also in the beginnings of a little career :)

Still have lots to learn, but hey this site looks great for that!

on with the fun :)

Believe it or not, my business consists mostly of traditional (with brushes, dyes and oils) retouching, enhancement and oil coloring for professional photographers.
I now do most all of my restorations in PS, or a combination of PS and handcoloring, and am still learning on a daily basis. This site is amazing!

I've been curiously hanging around on the fringes for a few years, now I think I am ready to step in and really get started, hopefully as an add-on to a portrait photography business. I hope to be ordering a new system soon, including a Wacom tablet.

I am a male of our species. I'm not sure what relevance that has to PS.

Could the moderator move this thread above the line or to an appropreate forum so that the business/pleasure of retouching could in some manor be the subject again?

Why am I here, because I'm interested in Photoshop retouch, not which gender the other people are. What ever you/we are is just fine.

Robert,

you wroteCould the moderator move this thread above the line or to an appropreate forum

This was Vikki's original post that started this thread ...

Just curious about the ratio of men to women who are active in the restoration business

The 'active in the restoration business' is the connection ...

I have noticed a difference between the genders (not just the obvious ;) ... and find this thread fun, interesting and relevent. This kind of comraderie and good will is what helps to keep this site so special.

Regards,
Roger

Not sure why it is (perhaps there are not more men here...just that men are more willing to answer an online poll! :) ) ...it would be interesting to know how men and women differ in the manner they approach a restoration or retouching job.

kathleen

one day this week the today show opined that women are more technophobic than men; if true, it could be related to why more men here. actually, restoration seems to me a more natural fit for a woman.

186 male - 109 female! wow! on some boards i've seen the ratios of the style 85%-15%... great to see such a strong presence of sweet part of human race here  (sorry if it's sexistic or something :depressed )

oh, btw, i think i'm male... :pirate:

Another female vote for the poll.
I have been in the business just a short while but am enjoying upskilling and the positive feed back I get from customers.
I have just started my own business, from previously working digitally in a lab based more around traditional photo processing where I started in the industry.
Another computor driven chick

Yet another female to add to the poll. We must be able to level this up somehow!!!

I would be interested to know, though, how many males vs females are just in it for fun, and how many males vs females do it fulltime. I get the impression that maybe more men do it for fun, while the females are busy doing the housework! Maybe I'm wrong! (Ok, maybe a little controversial???)

It is interesting to find out though, because apart from anything else, what different workflows are used - do more women multitask than men? Is it quicker to do a few things at a time, or do each one properly in turn?

Ok, so I guess this isn't techinically restoration and retouching, but we can still all learn from it. All extra bits of information are worth having!

If you don't receive a reply from Vikki, I know she uses Photoshop, and I'm pretty sure that's what she uses for colorizations (of course she might use more than one program).

Photoshop is like a car. Both the men and women can drive it.
The men understands the inner workings of a car.
The women just gas up the car and go.
