View Full Version : Eye drawing tutorials... Looking for tutorials on drawing the eye - Specifically the female eye. Here's my (weak) first attempt. I know I have a ways to go but here goes...
http://www.jackzucker.com/images/eye.jpg dcarr 01-24-2003, 08:18 AM dj posted a great eyeball tutorial with a sample and I believe, an action. Check it out Jaz
Debbie I tried searching for eyeball and got nothing. The forum search would not let me search for eye or "eye tutorial" T Paul 01-24-2003, 10:32 AM Here are a couple of Tuts I found using Google:
Create an Eye Tutorial (http://tiemdesign.com/howto/2002/December/PSEB/default.htm)
Eyeball Tutorial (http://www.masteratwork.com/ed/school/eye/index.html)
Interesting approach to creating a eye by using polar coordinates (2 part tut) Eye Tut (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/brizon/eyetutorial/)
Iris Texture Map Tut (http://www.kandsdesign.com/kim/eyemap-tut.html) T Paul 01-24-2003, 10:37 AM Eyeball Action from Adobe Studio Exchange:
Description: This set contains two actions. The first action renders a realistic, yet somewhat cartoonish eyeball, while the second action turns the eyeball sideways. As with the older action, you get to change the Iris color! Originally posted by T Paul

Eyeball Action from Adobe Studio Exchange:
I got an error message part of the way through although when I continued, it seemed to work. It's probably a PS6 action and there must be some subtle incompatibility with ps7 http://www.jackzucker.com/images/eye2.jpg T Paul 01-24-2003, 10:55 AM Grin...
And here is the link to DJ's action. It was located in the Restoration, Retouching and Manipulation Forum in the Action, Brushes, Swatches, Styles, Textures Thread. The link takes you to the thread, but you will have to scroll down to get to DJ's post.

Sorry. I haven't tried the action yet. You may be able to tweak the problem and record the fix if you can figure out the incompatibility. I'll try to take a look at it later and see if I have the same problem.
~T Thanks (Mr.) T for all your help! T Paul 01-24-2003, 11:13 AM Actually it's Mrs. ;) Originally posted by T Paul

Oops...I wrote that to be funny but as soon as I sent it, I went "DOH! - I'll bet T is a woman!" :-)
Thanks for all your help,
Jaz T Paul 01-24-2003, 11:32 AM Not a problem. I'm looking forward to seeing the results!
~T Schwartzie 01-24-2003, 12:26 PM I would suggest studying some traditional art books. I dont know if they are still published but Andrew Loomis wrote excellent books on drawing the face and the human form. My latest attempt. Getting better but please help with the lashes!!!

Your link doesn't seem to work :( I think my webhost was down for a while...It seems to be working now... T Paul 01-25-2003, 03:14 PM It's really developing nicely! Now you just need to add a bit of shading to make it look more realistic and give the image more depth.
~T i updated my abstract face using these eyes too!
http://www.jackzucker.com/images/sketch3.jpg Schwartzie 01-25-2003, 04:23 PM I see you flipped the eyes because the highlights are flipped and give a crosseyed look. There are some specific proportions that apply to any human face with small deviations of course. One thing the human face is never completely symetrical. another is the mouth generally ends at point straight down from either eye. There are a lot more proportional things you learn in art school and books and observation. It all takes time, keep on pluggin"
Are you trying to achieve a realistic or a stylistic look?

http://drawsketch.about.com/library/weekly/aa010503a.htm Thanks for the links. Only the last one works though...
Fort his image I was trying for a stylized look. When I get an eye that works, I'll probably flip it (adjusting the catchlights per your recommendation) and file the image somewhere. It's something I've had in my mind for sometime. I had wanted to get a girl to pose for me with very light makeup and dark lipstick and eye shadow and I was planning on flat-lighting it and slightly overexposing but this is the kind of thing I had in mind...(Except for the part where I can't draw! :D )
I appreciate your comments!
Jaz T Paul 01-28-2003, 01:50 PM Not sure if you are going for realistic or not, but here is a good site with numerous sketching tips:

YIKES! That's a pretty short tutorial for something so well done. I love how the artist rendered the man's face but really!?!...Shouldn't he have included some step-by-step details?
Jaz T Paul 01-28-2003, 02:06 PM Here is one more...
Eye Drawing Stage (http://www.artyfactory.com/portraits/drawing_techniques/eye1.htm) Here are a couple more links for ya, Jaz...

Pam Thanks. Still not enough steps and details.
The thing that's so hard about doing (long) women's lashes is simulating the curve and depth. It's very difficult to achieve that when drawing. I notice most artists choose instead to abstract women's lashes and just create the feeling of depth and curve. That's what I'd like to learn! :-)
You did see my latest cartoon eyes?

I think they are getting (slightly) better though the last one'e iris is too perfect... Pam - Those are wonderful. I had seen them both before but they are definitely worth saving! :-)
Unfortunately, as good as those tutorials are, they provide no detail on creating lashes... Oh well. I guess I really need some lessons! :D This is from a very talented young woman who hangs out at deviant art.
Mig Thanks Mig,
That's the same tutorial that Pam posted.
Jaz T Paul 01-30-2003, 09:47 AM Here is one more...
Painting Eyes in Painter (http://www.critical-depth.com/cgi-bin/idd/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2676)
Also scroll down once you get to the web site and there will be some close up details on how they did the eye lashses.
~T T Paul 02-06-2003, 01:23 PM Okay, found one more tutorial. I even tried this one out with fairly descent results.
Here is the tut:Painter: Drawing & Painting an Eye (http://www.webdesignclinic.com/ezine/v1i6/painterart/index.html)
The tutorial is for Painter 5.5. I tried it working with Painter 7.0. Now I couldn't find half the brushes the tut mentioned, but I found some that were close and just went with it... It looks alot like the one you referenced on the painter can group. I suspect that TW from the Painter Can group looked at the 2nd one you posted.
Jaz T Paul 02-06-2003, 01:42 PM Yes they are very similar. I am going to try the Painter Can one next since it includes the eye brow and the results seems a bit more realistic.
~T GOLDCOIN 02-07-2003, 03:25 PM Don't think this site was mentioned......
Has great shading details to this eye to follow. Also gives you a .psd file layer of the eye to download.
