PHOTO ART: Mini-challenge #84 – Model A Truck

Here’s another “mini-challenge” to play with in the Photo-based Art category until the next major challenge is posted here (http://www.retouchpro.com/challenge/index.html).

The base image can be downloaded by clicking the link below the photo description.

I ran across this image the other day while surfing at DPReview.com. It's a Model A Ford truck (cira 1920s I think) put out to pasture in all places on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Nice place to retire, huh? This treasure was snapped by Kudbegud, one of the local residents.

This rig brought back fond memories for me: My dad used to restore Model-A's when I was a youngin'. He'd buy two or three at a time and munge the parts of many into a single, running car.

One day I had the misfortune of excercising extremely poor judgment by ignoring his directive to "Not play baseball around my cars." My first 'pitch' to my brother promptly crashed through the windshield he'd recently installed after weeks of junkyard surfing, turning antique windshield glass into zillions of little pieces. Dad was not pleased.

The fond memories came weeks later after he found another windshied and finally got that Model-A running. Riding in the "rumble seat" with your brother, laughing your brains out under sunny, not yet polluted Los Angeles skies is a pretty neat way to tool around town.

Enough of that. Let's see you tool around with this pic.

A BIG thanks to Kudbegud, for allowing me to post this golden nugget.

~Danny~

This version came about as a result of running two David Rowley based actions, Hayes Island and Cardiff Bay and merging (by layer mask) the results.

In the next few days I'll summarize in detail how I did this in a separate thread.

Cheers...

Danny, your dad's hobby sounds like a lot of fun. Did you inherit any of his restored vehicles?

On this one I used buzzpro simplifier with an outline overlaid.

Nothin' pretty about abandonment, even it is in Hawaii!

Here I tried to make it look like cobwebs and vines had overtaken the poor old thing. To get the cobweb effect I used KPT6 materializer set to negative numbers, then duped it and overlaid in screen mode to emphasize the webs/vines and also replace the bright colors with dreary neutrals.

I wanted to try and emphasize the car more and the jungle less. Textured oils, copied and blurred and st to overlay (I think). Then some KPT Equalizer to emphasize the car even more.

Phyllis - Both your renditions are beautiful. But "Cobwebs" is incredible, really gorgeous. I especially love the colors, they set the mood here perfectly. In a larger format it must be astounding. Excellent, excellent, excellent!

Blackknight- I can't see your image. Maybe it didn't upload properly, or did you take it away?

I just reloaded it - see if you can see it now.

Blacknight - I can see it! It's beautiful. I really like the rich texture you achieved, and the lighting is great. Looks like a dark overcast day just before a storm. Great job.

2.Grayscale- using Image> Adjustment> ChannlMixer (Check the Monochrome Box)
3. Using Image> Adjustment> Brightness/Contrast (Adjust to my liking)
4. Paint in new color on new layers, blending mode set at color burn
5. Add texture

PHYLLIS:

Nope...Dad never kept any his rigs. He'd piece them together, then somebody would offer him a ton of $$ and he's start over.

Nice work on yours; especially like the cobweb effect.

STEVE:

Very impressive results via "Trimoon's Median Texture" method. Did you use an Adobe texture (which one?) or another source?

PHIL:

Yours turned out great. Just oustanding.

Danny, the outlining in your pic emphasizes the rust and dents on the old car...very effective.

Steve, especially like the first one with the touches of color...very effective on this particular subject.

BK, that texture looks great on the car...really adds to the mood.

Pam, thanks for the nice words. I agree that this picture, my rendition or another, would be great for printing and framing. It's just a great image that speaks to us in different ways. I recall a very similar old truck parked on my grandma's farm as a child.

Nice paint job, Chuck...how did you do it? What program? As for your attic find, yep, this is just the sort of old photo that would be in the attic! Coincidentally, here is one I found in MY attic...not a photo, but a crayon drawing I made of Grandpa's car when I was a kid.

I used my abstract method then desaturated and inverted it and blended it with darken mode over a buzzpro simplified version of the pic. Then I ran the rough pastels filter. Last I made a brush that looks something like the lines generated by rough pastels and used it to touch up some areas that were indistinct...to outline headlights, for example.

This was fun, started with a tutorial from digital-creativity.uk.
Got a bit lost in the middle and finished with an action for the frame.

Phyllis the cobweb effect is great. I really like the look.

Blacknight the colors and texture on the image look fantastic.

Trimoon – Three in a row! Wow I am partial to no.1 the frame and mat on that image is very nice.

Chuck I think you need to take that truck out of the attic and hang it downstairs! I love the edges and overall color on your image.

OK Phil – the hippie look and acid bg brought back way too many memories for me! Lol -- love the concept

Kudbegud – another 3 in a row, can’t make up my mind which one I like best – the effect on all three is cool. --- COOL, oh no that must be left over from Phil’s image; next I’ll be saying someone’s image is groovy!

Goldcoin what a great effect on the edges, how’d you do that?

Sorry Danny – Jean and I are planning on separate avatar’s – just have not made a second one yet - lol

Chuck....
Really liked your painted version, did you do that in Photoshop or Painters?

Pam.....

You sure know your filters..... That is "Polor Coordinates" under > distort. But the tutorial, later took it Black & White. I layered back to color and ran an etching action, Antique Stipple Engraving, one of my favorites. Merged that result with all the others.

TwinbNJ
The action is from Adobe's called Z(Burnt Edges) for the frame. Changed the background to black from white.

What a great picture to work on..I am a sucker for old truck and equipment pictures.. All of these entries are so good that I am saving all of them into an old truck file for further review later..

Here is a try at a pen and ink using a variation of Trimoons pencil02 technique..

Thanks
Jerry :D

I had to reduce the size of this 2 times and save it at 0 quality to get it to fit here..Hope it looks like something..

Trimoon's method transcends subjects. Despite the size shuffling hoops lept through, to me it shows just fine.

On this one I ran the Virtual Painter "Oil Painting" filter against our Maui classic, then applied a technique that can be found here: http://www.developingwebs.net/photoshop/watercolor.php

Phili, wow...looks like you took that old car on a “trip!”

Jean, nice job with the crosshatching effect...almost looks like a plaid car now. :)

Jill, very creative and clever...old car reminiscing about the glory days of its youth. My rusty old bones can empathize. :)

Kudbegud, I like what the hayes effect does to the background...simplifies the leaves while bringing out the branches.

Looker, wonderful result with Paint Engine...love what it did to the foliage!

Frank, funny idea and well done! Putt putt vrooooom!

Danny, your combination of VP oil painting and the watercolor technique really turned out great...looks like real watercolors.

Jerry, great job on your pen and ink version.

Goldcoin, looks like Corel has some interesting filters. Anxious to see more!

I didn't keep close track of everythingn I did on this one, but it went something as follows.

Converted it to a grayscale sketch and saved it as another name. Reopened it along with the original and pasted the sketch into the original, as the bottom layer. Used flaming pears atherise filter and then altered the opacity. Flattened and added a new white background layer and erased around the edges. Added some texture and saved.

This was my original thought when I saw the truck pic. This was done with RBS Dream2 action in the Screen mode. I also fixed the front left headlight, which seemed too bright for my pic.

The prior color pic was done with Softpainter Action, with the addition of a skull pic from an earlier photo manipulation challenge.

Goldcoin & Jerry as always nice job.

In fact all the entries are great, its amazing all the differnet ways we can see the same picture..

Danny, I like the coloration, I am still working on makeing the sheen for metal, Itried glass but you cant get the distortion out. Trie a couple of programs but no luck and the one program that can do it is $200.

Anyway, I call this one reserection

Phili1 .....

Good to have you back.
What an unusual happening with your entry.... I like the outer effect and the fact that it doesn't blur the actual truck. Different, one does get the feeling of viewing thru an opening of over grown bush.

Wonder if Shan is ever going to return and give us the other two tutorials for the Charcoal effect? gosh, I hope so......

Ken, like the distressed-look texture you added... is perfect with the subject matter.

Bob, I especially like the ghostly glow effect on the b/w version...love how you added the passengers very subtly.

Phili, that exploding bush effect is great...nice framing for any pic, really...must remember that trick. Your metal sheen technique is wonderful! You might consider posting a short tutorial on the settings etc. for doing that. Please?

Hi Phyllis,

It was an accident, at least to begin with. I was working on the truck picture and not sure what to do next. So to relieve the tension I thought I'd amuse myself by loading it into HyperTyle with texture turned off and hitting it with random effects. All of a sudden one popped onto the screen that reminded me of LeRoy Neiman style so I saved it.

Today I took another look and liked it better than what I had before. But is was not quite right. So I used Color Mechanic to shift pinks to the off-whites. Then used Select|Color Range along with a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and to move goldenrods to yellows. And another color change that I forget now. That got my colors right but it was too rough. I had to use small doses of median, buzz, and reduce graininess to mellow it, which also ended up adding to a stroke feel.

Anyway, I don't know if this can be replicated. This is an interaction with my rendered version, not the original picture. And who knows if this will even work on a rendered version of a different picture. I just got lucky and then followed up by taking it further.

Andrew

Hi Kudbegud

>>Andrew....i like the second a little better. the first is bold and bright but the second is smoother and softer.<<

Now that I've been looking at them more, I like the smoother one better too. I guess I was being too critical. I think I might change the windshield, though. Maybe make dark areas so the light areas looks like reflection instead of dirt.

>>how were you using hyper tyle? i have it but didn't think to use it.<<

On this picture, I turned off textures, went to the Adjust menu, and hit the random button again and again. I was just goofing around. I actually bought it last week to apply textures, but haven't found a suitable picture yet.

Andrew B.
02-23-2003, 09:03 AM
Well, that was odd. I made a change to my second truck picture and tried to replace the previous version. What I got was the new name but the old picture. So I deleted the picture, saved, went into edit again but there was no option to attach a picture.

So I'm posting it here. Not much change, just made the windshield darker.

I don't know what it is about old junkers, falling down barns, and dead trees, but they make great photo.art subjects. The original photo is great and I've enjoyed looking at all the renditions in the thread.

I stayed pretty close to the 4th tutorial on this page. http://www.dynamicdesign.biz/gallery/gallery12.htm except skipped the last 3 steps and used around 100 instead of 3000 in the ink stack.
