View Full Version : Colors that look good together... winwintoo 03-11-2003, 04:43 PM I'm posting this in the salon because my befuddled brain couldn't work out which category it belongs to.
Does anyone have a source for color pallettes that show groups of colors that go together - I'm told that some of my combinations are less elegant than I imagined them to be :bawling: :bawling: jeaniesa 03-11-2003, 07:29 PM Margaret,
A while back Tom C posted a link to the Color Schemer (www.colorschemer.com/online/) site. I just tried the website and it's "unavailable", but if you do a search in google for "Color Schemer" and click on the cached page it works just fine.
Hope this helps,
Jeanie winwintoo 03-11-2003, 08:15 PM Thank you Jeanie and Chuck. I'm deep into making these photo galleries for the family reunion and I seemed to be stuck on the olive green monochrome kick. I'm drawn to the drab colors, I don't think I even see blue, pink is too weak and red is too loud...I realize that I'm color challenged so I thought I'd better get some help.
:D :D

Jeanie G. Couch 03-11-2003, 11:07 PM Don't feel bad Margaret...getting a good color scheme is much harder than it looks. I usually go through about 10 options every time I update one of my web pages! :D
If you want a subdued look but do not want it to look entirely monochrome, try an Analogous color scheme. With the olive green you could use a blue green and yellow green to spice things up a bit. The online Color Schemer is also available at Boogie Jack's site (http://www.boogiejack.com/colormach2.html) without worrying about cached pages and so on. winwintoo 03-12-2003, 06:15 AM Thanks Greg, I'll keep that in mind. Leah, I followed the link to color schemer at Boogie Jack's, but for some reason it doesn't work in Safari and in IE, it works, but the grid of color buttons doesn't have the colors there but the buttons work. :D :D
For anyone trying to do web develoment, just another browser glitch.
I also came across this color picker from
Visibone (http://www.visibone.com/colorlab/)
Take care, Margaret jeaniesa 03-12-2003, 08:37 AM Thanks for the link, Leah!! :)
Jeanie ravenmd 03-12-2003, 08:55 AM Thanks for the link to that Color Schemer.. I like it very much!
I usually just keep trying hundreds of colours until I find some I like. I tend to be a colour-glutton (lots and lots of bright colours) but that doesn't work for everything :D cinderella 03-17-2003, 08:40 PM Thanks for the Color Schemer link. Just this past weekend I spent way too much time with my color deficient son trying many combos of colors on a web page he is designing. I sent the link to him and can hardly wait to what he says about it. I know it will be of great help as he always worries that what looks good to him will look atrocious to others. dcarr 03-17-2003, 09:10 PM Margaret
I have found this page to be very helpful for a variety of schemes. This has a color harmony, match and tint collection for everything from room paint to web safe.

Easy Color Themes is a complete tool for visual color design, intended for Designers, Webmasters, Painter Artists, software developers and anybody else that works with a color palette. You can grab colors from you screen, using a color picker with optional zoom, that automatically gets out of the way, so you don t have to move it to grab a color below it. You can create your own color list, specify custom color names and also export your color themes to BMP. Additional features include screen capture, project support, zoom and multiple color output formats (Visual Basic, Visual C++, HTML and custom).
Happy Coloring!
Rusty winwintoo 03-26-2003, 06:02 AM That looks like a cool app, but it won't work on my Mac. :(

This is a list of colors listed by name and hex. Takes a while to load.
Margaret winwintoo 10-21-2003, 03:50 PM Just found this excellent color site (http://www.pixy.cz/apps/barvy/index-en.html) while I was looking for something else.
Most of the explanation is not in English, but the color wheel is so well done, it really doesn't matter.
Margaret jeaniesa 10-21-2003, 06:39 PM GREAT addition Margaret!
Just in case you thought no one was following this thread, I refer to it all the time. Thanks for continuing to add to it! :)
Jeanie Yet another color schemer site...
ColorMatch Remix (http://color.twysted.net/) Vikki 01-07-2004, 04:33 PM Here's my favorite (lots of options to play around with).
http://www.pixy.cz/apps/barvy/index-en.html winwintoo 01-09-2004, 10:17 PM I just came across another one (http://www.draac.com/colorcube.html)
Hope you find it useful,
Margaret This site (http://www.ficml.org/jemimap/style/color/wheel.html) doesn't actually tell you what colours look god together - it's more focused on web- and browser- safe colours. But it's soooooo pretty I had to mention it. And this one (http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/tools/color-blend/) takes two starting colours as input and generates intermediate steps between them. Also, a tip from another site - use the "Browse Colors" option at behr.com (http://www.behr.com/behrx/workbook/index.jsp) to generate good colour combinations - it's designed for paint, but no reason you can't do a screen grab and sample the colours at the end. And it's so user-friendly! BTW, the Color Schemer (http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html) site (discussed at the beginning of this thread) is back up! Vikki 04-07-2004, 09:19 AM Not sure if anyone's seen this. I liked it so much, I purchased it.
