I think you give an excellent explanation about selecting the skin, but after that I do not know how to proceed with Neat Image when there is no large area to take a sample. Could you shed some light on this?

In essence, NI works best with the largest feature and detail free area that you can find. However, you can get by with smaller selections. You can make a small selection and use the rough noise analyzer followed by the Auto Tune, or you can use the same selection for the rough noise analyzer, make several more small selections using the fine tuning analyzer and then use the auto tune or auto complete. Auto fine tune uses the whole image data while auto complete just fills in the gaps of the currently selection profile data. I hope to address this use issue in a more advanced tutorial later.

I must confess that Neat Image is not coming easily to me. But the problem I'm having is when I select a small area, I get a message that says "selection too small," and Neat Image will not let me move to the next step. I have tried selecting several small areas, but when I move to the second one the marquee disappears from the first one.

What am I overlooking?

BTW, I'm practicing using the Demo version. I don't know if this makes a difference.

A selection must be at least 60x60 pixels. If you are getting the message 'selection is too small', then this is the case. If you look in the lower left of the screen, you can see the X and Y pixel sizes for the selection box as it is being made. If your selection is less than 100x100, you'll get a warning box but just ignore it.
Make the first selection and then use the rough noise analyzer (Blue ruler button). After that, make additional selections and add them to the existing profile by clicking the fine tuning analyzer (first green ruler button).

Thanks again, VG. I've read the instructions before but they didn't sink in. But you have cleared this part up for me, and now rereading the instructions makes more sense. I think I'm on my way to learning this.
