Who are some of the artists represented in your music library? a few of mine are: Etta James, Eric Clapton, various blues artists, Rod Stewart, Brasil '66; Blood, Sweat and Tears; Sam Cooke, Tom T. Hall, Tanya Tucker, Gene Watson, Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, Tony Benett, and my all time favorite - The Chairman of The Board, Frank Sinatra. There are quite a few more, but it's a little after 5 A.M. (kinda hard to think) :D

I listen to a wide range of music; it just depends on what kind of mood I am in. I have a ton of classical music, some New Age, some Rock, a little Pop, some Blues and Jazz, Country, and even a tape of some Aborigines playing on skin drums, percussion tubes, Didjeridus and such. I also enjoy Pasty Cline, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond and Frank Sinatra. But for peaceful moments, I really enjoy the haunting tunes of Enya, the enchanting voice of Sarah Brightman and music sung by Andrea Bocelli. So with me, you never know what sounds are going to be coming out of my earphones.

I guess I'm a country girl mostly but I like some rock and classical sometimes too. Like T said, it depends on my moods.

Traditional Celtic music preformed on traditional insturments, Simon and Garfunkel, and the occasional dose of Wagner are to be found in my below ground living area. Tom

How could I forget Patsy Cline and Simon and Garfunkel? Some of the best music around, in my opinion.

Well, my favorite vocal artist is Joanne Shenandoah (described by some as a Native American Enya). Of course, I like Enya too and other New Age artists. George Winston is a favorite (actually, I love just about any piano.)

Folk: My absolute favorite in this category is Joni Mitchell. Also, kd lang.

Then there's jazz. My favorites here are Vince Guaraldi, David Gruisin, Spyro Gyra, Steely Dan.

I have no idea what category Stevie Ray Vaughan falls under, but if he's great to listen to if I need to clean the house. ;)

Of course, Beatles, Simon and Garfunkle and Eagles need to be mentioned too. And an awful lot of artists from the 70's and 80's - those "oldie" radio stations really make me feel old! :(

Oh, and just about any classical, African mbira and traditional Vietnamese instrumental.

NOT: opera or rap.

Yanni, Kitaro, Liz Story, Pink Floyd, Dead Can Dance, Jethro Tull, Robert Rich, Sade, Andreas Vollenwieder, David Arkenstone, Peter Buffett (no, not Jimmy), Suzanne Ciani, Alanis Morrisette, Annie Lennox, tons more...

Jean Michel Jarre is on as I type this.

Also, big thumbs up for Geoge Winston, and suggest also William Ackermann and Michael Jones

Anyone use any internet radio with any regularity and success? After I upgraded to MS Internet Explorer 6 I started using the builtin MSN music service...very good music, wide selection, but spotty connection. I love the Echoes radio program (echoes.org) and came >this< close to working for Hearts of Space.

My favorite musician is Vince Gill but I like pretty much anything. Anyone listen to Chet Atkins? I have a bunch of his CDs. Reminds me of George Winston--except with a guitar. :)

Wide range also, like the rest of you --

patriotic - Sousa and other marches, Kate Smith, Ray Charles

spiritual - Perry Como, Tennesee Ernie Ford, Jane Froman, Mahalia Jackson

vocal - Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Vic Damone, Della Reese, Bing Crosby, Ray Charles, Bette Midler, Andrews Sisters, Jo Stafford, Jane Morgan, Eva Cassidy

folk - Buffy St. Marie; Peter, Paul & Mary, Joan Baez, 3D's, Melanie

Big Band - Glenn Miller - "In the Mood" could get me moving even if I was "lying there dying", Modernaires

Country - Ray Charles (again), Judds, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson

I love some popularized renditions of operatic & classical works, - such as the Toreador Song and La Habanera from"Carmen", "Claire de Lune", etc. but know little about the original music.

Any family history CD that I make will have a soundtrack, because my life has always had a soundtrack!

Since I posted here it seems I've been listening to a lot of women vocalists. Sarah McLachlin, Natalie Merchant, Alanis Morrisette, Annie Lennox, Loreena McKennitt.

A friend burned his entire CD collection to MP3, and I've been using the opportunity to catch up on the decade of the 90s (I'm only 10 years out of date).

I listen to lots of styles of music but I lean towards the 60's rock. The Beatles are my all time favorites, I grew up with them and I have an extensive Beatles Collection. But I have a son who is studying to be an Audio Engineer so we have music playing constantly in our house. Everything from Blues from BB King and Muddy Waters to Limp Biskit and One Dollar Short. I must say that some of the more modern stuff doesn't appeal to me but I'm careful not to denigrate it because I remember my father telling me the music I listened to as a kid was rubbish and I don't want to do the same to my sons. I actually like some of the newer stuff but still play my Beatles collection when ever I can get a chance to use the stereo.

My favorite for years has always been smooth jazz.
Earl Klugh, Norman Brown, Boney James, The Rippingtons, Peter White, Dave Grusin, Bob James, the list is huge.

I like and appreciate almost all other types of music, but really only "buy" the ones above.

We don't have any radio stations around here that play this type of music, so I have to create my own personal jukebox (WinMX). Gotta love mp3.

well seems everyone likes a mixed bag

no different here.. music made a dramatic shift in the states in early 1964 and as a 17 year old I stepped off a ship in okinawa to hear people talking about "beatles" like it was a good thing...

never really caught up with music again until after my enlistment.

I tried to fit into the 70's.... like a hippy wantabe... as it was all strange to me... thought the new music was all the same.

so now that all my "don't know zip" credentials are posted

my largest collection has always been "pink floyd" ... altho I liked it a lot it also had few lyrics... so if I forgot to change the music for a few hours didn't seem as repetitive... actually think I may have finally memorized the words to "breath"

anyhow for all you folks that have writen me off as "no class" I also have a cd that I like a lot performed by the "ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA"

rondon

sorry... elbow hit the enter button
anyhow the RPO album plays "PINK FLOYD" .... best of everything .. big band... pink floyd... lots of the hits...

I think it's fairly rare and I'm willing to share if anyone has an interest.

other than that.. well steely dan's always good for an all nighter....

Music is my first passion... Photos, my second.

Funny Doug, most of the women you've mentioned are Canadian singers! I like that. I love Sarah's voice as well. Have you ever listened to Amanda Marshall? I think you might like her voice and style. You might want to check out Dido - amazing voice.

I have to admit, I'm a bit of an MP3 junkie. I love all genres and collect just about everything from 1950 on. I love this thread. It shows how diverse our tastes are and hopefully, we can get some new recommendations. I remember reading an article one day that said that most people over the age of 35 don't listen to new music. That's about where the generation gap in music starts. It would be nice to continue this thread with some new suggestions!

My father owned a recording studio while I was growing up. Music has been and will continue to be an important influence in my life. For me, it brings back memories of my childhood. I so remember listening The Fifth Dimension - Aquarius. What a great era in music the late 60's were.

Please let me know if there is a rare song or something special you may want. No doubt... I have it!

Yes, I've been looking for 'Salva Me' by Libera, written and produced by Robert Prizeman.

Almost forgot to post a few recommendations:

1) Dido - Alternative/Pop
2) Amanda Marshall - Pop
3) Norah Jones - Blues
4) Remy Shand - Pop/Jazz
5) Laura Fygi or Diana Krall - Smooth Jazz
6) Lara Fabian - French/Pop (outstanding voice)
7) Tony Bennett - Playing With My Friends - Jazz
8) Norma Jean Bell - Jazz/New Age

I have a very wide taste in music, with both my LP and CD collections running into 100s. I must say my all-time favourites must be Grover Washington (Winelight) and George Benson (Breezin') with George Benson & Earl Klugh (Collaboration) coming in high up on the list. Other favourites: Clapton, Beatles, Billy Joel, Elton John, Joan Baez, Carole King, Beethoven, etc etc.

In fact, more of my restoration work goes into turning LP covers into CD covers than photos at the mo! In turning the music on LPs into CDs I often wish for a clone tool and a feathering tool (and of course, what I wouldn't do for layers with masking!)

Lately, I've been getting into heavy metal and Rap (yeah, right!!). :D I've really been listening to more bluegrass, with the Osborne brothers being my favorites, and Seldom Scene second in line. But all the other stuff is still there, getting played frequently too.

My interest in music started in the 1940’s with the music of the British Isles, which quickly expanded to all folk music. Now I listen to most music, but not rap or the heavy metal stuff.

I developed an interest in jazz when my son started to listen when he was about eight. He and his sister introduced us to Billy Joel, Bruce Springsten, etc., which was quite enjoyable.

My wife and I are classical music and opera buffs, but there is very little music that we do not listen to.

There was a popular folk music place in Greenwich Village, NYC (1950's-1980's) that attracted all the new comers and it was the center of the action. We saw Odetta, The Clancy Brothers, Joan Baez, Josh White and most of their contemporaries perform there.

The music of Appalachia (see a movie called The Song Catcher), the Mississippi Delta, the Cajun areas of Louisiana, the work songs of Alabama, etc. are so moving and speak so much about our heritage.

I never listened to Elvis when I was in high school, but his music also grew out the Southern tradition. I am not into the cult of Elvis, but his music is quite good.

Someone mentioned that many of the female singers were from Canada. Oscar Brand is also from Canada. He is a wonderful folk singer and folklorist. It is interesting to hear him trace the origin of a folk song through many transformations.

Lisa, I also really enjoy Tapestry. It was one of the first LPs I replaced when I got my first CD player back in 88. Must be something to do with the cat on the cover (how's that for hitting 3 threads at once! :) )

I didn't know about "Tapestry revisited" (nor did I know about Carole King's daughter!), but will keep my eyes (ears?) open for them.

Doug, I see you mentioned Dead Can Dance...I have been listening to one of their CD's and love it!

Like most, I have wide ranging tastes...yes even some metal when I was younger! (I was an Iron Maiden and Rush fan...what can I say, I was a geek)

A few artists I have been listening to lately - Tortoise, Oregon, The Orb, Fela Kuti, Bunny Wailer, Bach's cello suites, John Coltrane, Radiohead.

Is anyone else following this new law that will put small, independent, internet radio stations out of business?

I won't reel off a list of music as like Al I'm knee deep in all sorts of music. However a friend of mine who works at a local theatre gave me some complimentaries for Nanci Griffith and the Blue Moon Orchestra. I was most impressed and have since bought a few of her albums. Like most of the American female singers I've seen over here Mary Chapin Carpenter etc they all have crack support musicians with them who are superb. John Carroll who backs Mary Chapin Carpenter was outstanding.

Karen Briggs is someone I've had my eye on for awhile. She has a new album out that I'm really looking forward to hearing.

I first heard of her during the Yanni PBS special. I'm an unrepentant Yanni fan, but this violinist made me wish he'd be quiet and just let her play. I spotted her in a few other supporting roles, and I've heard one track from her new album on the radio.

Her energy and joy comes through in a way I haven't heard in a long time, and almost never from a jazz violinist.

I'd like to make another recommendation - Ben Harper. I've just discovered him. He sings like Cat Stevens but he has a real folk/rock/spiritual sound to his music. It seems every song has it's own unique style. He is wonderful guitar player - which you will undoubtedly hear in his songs.

Give him a listen, I think you might like him.

My main man is "Earl the Perl Klugh". His older stuff and solo work is great. My second life is a professional classical/jazz musician and college instructor of guitar. Grant Green, Tower of Power, Benson and James Brown for bumpin' music. For fusion, you just can't beat Mike Stern or Pat Metheny. More trad. jazz stuff, I like Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith, Bill Evans, Miles, Monk, Train, Pass.

Blues: Ronnie Earl, Robin Ford, SRV, Clapton, Wolf, Johnny Winters, Freddie King, Savoy Brown

Stride Guitar: Guy Van Duser (just an awesome guitar player), Leon Redbone, Atkins, Leo Kottke, John Fahey

Rock: ELP, The Nice (pre ELP), Procol Harum, King Crimsom, Yes
Beatles, Traffic, Hendrix, Led Zep, Jeff Beck, James Gang, Terry Reid, Malmstein, Vai

Classical: Segovia, Andrew York, Kanengiser (best classical guitar player on the planet) Composers: Villa Lobos, Ponce, Turina, Bach, Albeniz', York, Mozart, Debussy, Torroba

Romantic side: Joni Mitchell (it's her way with words), Ella, Diana Krall (it's the eyes and her playing ability) Are you out there Diana and do you need a sideman guitar player? I'm ready!

I like just about anything that has quality.

Hi Lisa,
do you mean old R&B or the newer stuff? if you like newer artists, some recommends are: Aaliyah, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys.

I'm into all kinds of music (except I find country music kind of annoying and I can't listen to classical for long without getting bored)
some of my favorites:

Rock: I like lots of old classic rock, but I really like lots of the newer bands too. Linkin Park, Creed, aerosmith, Bon jovi, the eagles, Weezer, U2, Default, StainD, Nickelback

Rap and hip hop: Wyclef jean, Swollen members, Nelly, Crazytown, Jay-Z

Other: Fatboy slim, the Barenaked ladies, Moby (I really like "Play" and the new album "18" is even better)

thats all I can think of at the moment anyway.

If you like Harper, you should really really REALLY (really!) pick up Hayden's newest album: Skyscraper National Park (http://www.maplemusic.com/product.asp?dept%5Fid=336&pf%5Fid=335%2D14)

It's wonderful. Normally I'm not a folky kind of girl, but I LOVE Hayden's stuff. And hey, he's Canadian. (: There are some samples on his site you can listen to as well: the official Hayden site (http://www.hardwoodrecords.com/) I've been playing the album non-stop since I recently saw him perform (which is driving everyone else nuts, but what can ya do)! He's also easy on the eyes... heh. Here's a pic a snapped of him at the concert:

Now Playing = Rumours - Fleetwood Mac

Ooooohhhh Baby! Do I love this thread!

Just like Lisa, my first love is music! I wouldn't even know where to start with my taste - it is truly all over the place. My music collection includes songs by everyone from:

First and Foremost - Queen Stevie Nicks / Fleetwood Mac

A VERY WIDE VARIETY (be warned):

Rolling Stones, Enya, Aerosmith, Kid Rock, Ani Difranco, Annie Lennox, Del McCoury Band, Michelle Shocked, Bob Schneider, Dar Williams, Eminem, Soundtrack to "The Sound of Music", Prince, Bruce Sprinsteen, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Buddy Holly, Marilyn Manson, Hole, various rap artists, Hank Williams, CSN&Y, Bitch and Animal, Dee-Lite, Pink, Berlin, Cat Stevens, Billy Joel, Elton John, Kate Bush, Cowboy Junkies, Concrete Blonde, Peter Gabriel.... and the list goes on and on and on....

Some highly recommended listening the lesser known artists are:

1. Ani Difranco - (edgy folk - most people have heard of her, but if not, you must! - not for the extremely faint of heart or religious types)

2. Dar Williams (folk - beautiful voice, songwriting, wonderful harmony) Must hear songs: The Kid, Alleluia, Oh Canada Girls

3. Bob Schneider -(bluesy, funky, sometimes rap by a very edgy white guy - also lead singer for bands "Ugly Americans" and " The Scabs" - his solo work is fine for faint-of-heart, band stuff is much more edgy.) Recommended CD : Lonleyland

4. Michelle Shocked - (somewhat known folksy bluesy artist who did her best work IMO before her religious conversion [late 80's early 90's] - she got her name because she endured shock treatments during a couple of stays in a mental hospital - interesting story)
Recommended CD: Short, Sharp, Shocked

5. Bitch and Animal - (Very edgy funky folk/rap - not for the faint of heart - new on Righteous Babe Records - opened for Ani this last tour)

6. Del Mccoury Band - (bluegrass - see them live - I have never seen a better fiddle or Mandolin player - they are AMAZING!!)

7. Ladysmith Black Mambazo - (South African a capella - These are the guys who sang with Paul Simon on Graceland and you have also heard them in Lifesavers commercials. Amazing talent.. I was fortunate enough to see them live, and they were fantastic.)

Lisa,

Your post about R&B made me think of Nikka Costa, she is a little funk, a little R&B, a little blues. Those of us at her concert decided she was Aretha Franklin meets Janis Joplin. You might want to check her out. Her style is a bit like a female Lenny Kravitz.

Her CD is called "Everybody Got Their Something" I forgot to include her in my list (as if it wasn't long enough already).

Wow chiquitita (everytime I say that - I feel like Carmen Miranda) I won't even answer you youngins about who Carmen is)! LOL
Your taste is very diversified. I do feel a common thread however your a bit of a rock/folk enthusiast. I really like Ani's music as well and have just about every CD's she's ever made - actually I love both Annie's! I have all of Eurithymics and Annie's single CD's.
Rumors is my favorite Fleetwood Mac CD - actually one of my husband's favorite bands. Do you like Ben Harper or Amanda Marshall? Two of my favorite singers. Have you listened to the new Stevie Nicks CD?

Thanks for the great recomendations.

But of course I have listened to the new Stevie (actually it was released a year ago) It is great, it's got collaborations with Natalie Maines, Sheryl Crow, Macy Gray and Sarah McGlaughlin.

Stevie is in the studio with Fleetwood Mac recording a new album, I am not sure of the release date on that one. All the members except Christine, who didn't want to tour or record anymore.

I have never listened to either of the two you mentioned, but I will check them out!

I'm not a huge fan of soundtracks but I do have a few that I listen to on a regular basis...

Blade Runner- soundtrack is composed by Vangelis (same guy who did Chariots of Fire... but 10 times better!)

the Eagles were great, what else could I say. One of the few groups that can't even come close to doing all their material in one concert. It was at the Portland Rose Garden, where the Trail Blazers play. It holds about 20,000 and was full to the max, they even had folks sitting behind the stage, way up. They did three oncors, Hotel California, and Desparado, all in all a great nite for the geezer.

Dear Doug and fellow RetouchPRO members - I would like to propose a new forum sub section in the community section of this site...The RetouchPro Album Review Club!

The criteria - a small one sentence/paragraph blurb to whatever bandwidth you want to plug an album that moves you.

Any music genre, with an attempt to label the music into a category - or at least to say that artist or album X is like a cross between Y and Z to help those decide who may be interested (I know how limiting it is to label an artist into a category <g>).

I love music and have a "broad but narrow" range of musical taste - and would find this a welcome addition to the excellent movie and cooking sub sections.

Suggestions, comments?

Sincerely,

Stephen Marsh.

With the exceptions of Rap/hip-hop and most heavy metal/goth, my taste in music runs the gamut. I've been collecting albums since the 50's and have laboriously converted most of my collection to MP3s and have about 12,000 songs in my iTunes playlists.

Classical - Even if you don't like opera in general, if you only had "Nessun Dorma" by Pavarotti in your collection, you would understand the power that this genre can hold. Talk about goose bumps!

Country: Probably the most "changed" of the genres. From twangy Hank Snow and "Paper Roses" to Alan Jackson (great lyricist), Alabama, Brooks & Dunn, and the other "slick cross over" artists, country is probably the most diverse genre.

Standards: Swing and torch songs seem to be making a comeback. Of course Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole (check out Cole's "The Touch of Your Lips") are in a class of their own. The Hi-Los and Four Freshmen were wonderful vocal jazz groups.

Bluegrass/Southern & Black Gospel: The Oakridge Boys and Statler Brothers along with Larry Gatlin are tops in this field, but many have not heard of Doyle Lawson and his group Quicksilver, The Gather Vocal Band. Flatt & Scruggs set the standard, but you can't ignore Alison Krauss can you?

Pop: I really enjoy just about every artist in the 50's - 80's years. Eagles, Beatles, Air Supply, Bread, Simon and Garfunkle, CSN&Y, Genisus, Abba, Springsteen, Elton John, Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffett, Chicago... just too many to name and many memories

Soundtracks & Musicals: My favorites are probably John Williams, David Foster, and James Horner on the movies side and Rogers and Hammerstine on the Stage and Musicals side.

El Mundo: Latin music is wonderful stuff, Buena Vista Social Club, Prez Prado, Charlie Zaa, Cuck Mangione, Gypsy Kings, Martin Denny, Sergio Mendez, Tito Puente, Gloria Estefan... The list goes on. If you like African precussive guitar there is none better than Habib Koite. I'll toss Amici Forever and il Divo in this genre because most of their stuff is in a foreign language.. LOL

Rock & Soul: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Danials Band, Muddy Watters, Peter Frampton, Eric Clapton, Queen, Rolling Stones, Santana, Van Morrison, Wilson Pickett the list goes on....

Mine would be a sad life without music!

"If I Can't Love Her" from the Broadway version of Beauty and the Beast has been running through my head... A goose bumps song! (Goose bumps, great to have on a hot Florida day).

Alan Menken does some great stuff for Disney.

I usually come in on these music topics late. Oh well, might as well add my 3 cents lol. I love pretty much every type of music except I have to be in the right mood for most country and while I don't mind some R&B/Rap it can't be that foul languaged violent type. But... my favorite group of all time (which I finally met in person this past year WOOHOO) is Muse. I listen to them about everyday. Then my other main love is the 80s. Pretty much all music from the 80s. I think I have just about every song and most of them on three different cds too. My kids just love me for that. Other than that, my music library ranges from Meatloaf to Les Miserables to Hot Hot Heat to the soundtrack from Amelie. My family was always into music. I went to my first concert at three years old. It was Donna Summers. Swampy hit the nail on the head "Mine would be a sad life without music!" Music is my daily medication.

O-zone? gah... dragostea was veeery popular here also (thank goddess WAS) - anywhere you went you could hear it, horrific!

what i like, or rather love, is metal. all of it - no matter if it's fantasy and power (with Blind Guardian in the front) or death/black from the depths of Norway... i don't mind rock and gothic, sometimes something classical, but other kinds are rather... unpleasant for my ears ;)
