My Microtek Scanmaker V just went out. The lamp is starting to go out and Microtek is saying it is going to costs $100 or more to fix it plus shipping.

I am wondering if it would be just as advisable to get a newer scanner with 48 bit color, etc. For instance, is the new Microtek 5600 as good a scanner for my purposes? Should I go another hundred or so for an AGFA or Epson?

I PRIMARILY use the scanner to scan photographs which I then restore using Photoshop 7.0. The Scanmaker V was, and still is, considered a professional type of scanner. Is there a scanner under $500 which I could use to scan photographs, and slides, at a presentable level?

All help is appreciated.

Thank You,

Kenneth S. Coxie
