Since Thanksgiving 2003 is this week, I was looking for something along those lines and found this photo by Baris.

This was done using Photobrush and the coloured pencil option, I find this gives a much better effect than the Photoshop coloured pencil.

This is line art watercolor that relies on smart blur. The tutorial can be found on http://www.dwphotoshop.com/photoshop/lineartwatercolor.php

Xaran:

You're right... the PhotoBrush version of colored pencil has a lot going for it. I much prefer the result on this image over the Photoshop version.

Bob:

Thanks for posting that tutorial link. I've seen ones similar to it, but this one has a unique twist. I added the link to the "photo-art tutorials" thread.

On mine I was just messing around with no particular preconceived notion of where I was going. This was an example of a "happy accident" (aka: [i]Accidental Art.[i]).

Rather than explain all the steps, a screenshot of the Layers Palette attached to the next post tells the story, with the exception that I added to the canvas size so emphasize the stroke frame. Blend modes (if not normal) noted in parens.

In retrospect layer D. could be eliminated.

Layer E. was used to restore color using a Layer Mask.

Done in PSP8.

Cropped, one step photo fix. Watercolor script. Applied texture.

A bit different. Using PSP8

Effects-Color balance, tungsten balar to give it the blueish tones

Effects-Artistic effects=Contours-Custom 1 with minimalised features and a light color of black instead of white. Detail at 8 and intensity at 52.

Auto Contrast enhancement

Softened.

Another version, then I must hit the sack.

Simple steps in PSP8
Effects-Texture-RoughLeather Custom1 with Teal as color
One step photo enhancement

(I heard on tv that anyone could become an expert in their field if they just devoted 3-5 hours a day for a year. I still have a lot of year to "paint" through...)

haven't done one of these in a while and thought I'd join in :) -- using Corel Photopaint here...

I duped the background to a new layer and ran a Plaster Wall texture on it and then added a Lighting effect of Texturize Light Top Left. I also dropped the transparency to 95%. I also used a Tone Curve to brighten this up a bit.

I duped the background again, placed this layer on top of the other and ran an Underpainting texture on it and dropped the transparency to 25%. I also ran a Tone Curve on this layer to brighten it up a bit.

I duped the background yet again, placing this layer on top. I ran a Watercolor art stroke on it, dropped the transparency to 70%, and made the merge mode of this layer to If Lighter.

I duped the background for the last time, again placing this new layer on top, and ran a Pen And Ink/Stippling texture on it, reduced the transparency to 45%, and made the merge mode of the layer to be Logical AND.

Finally, I duped the background and clipmasked the center portion out so I would have just the frame.

Fooling around w/ Painter8 some more, this time with the chalk cloner. Tried the Blender>GrainyBlender on the background, but didn't like it much on this image. I used the Pens>Thick&ThinPen3 to delinate some of the edges (hand drawing). Increased contrast with Curves in Elements2 as a final step.

Good try again with Painter Mark! I think we'll all be experimenting for a long time to come - it's the only way to get to know those brushes and what they're capable of achieving. I haven't enjoyed working with anything that says "grain" so far. I guess a penny will drop in that regard eventually...but don't hold your breath LOL.

This painting reminds me, because of the dark background, of old 16th century European paintings.

Mark - That is awesome !!! Simply Awesome ! You like Painter huh ?

I have been trying out a few ideas i was working on for an alternative method of sharpening and came across this nice effect, which i will work into an action.

It appear that by changing the blending mode can produce some rather nice results.

Neve, while this tool has grain, it's not very strong. A little pressure on the tablet takes most of it out. I too like how the background came out. It was about the last part I did and really made the image come together.

Axle, you're way too kind. I think my Painter images have been a bit "ham fisted" compared to yours. You have a very smooth, elegant touch. As for your posting, I especially like the 'HidingOriginal' result. Was the Photocopy layer simply than filter run on a copy of the original image?
BTW, it looks like your Painter tutorial might be generating some extra sales for Corel. I bet if they bundled it with their trial version, they'd win over much of the 'non-artist' crowd. You should ask for a commission.

I couldn't survive without blending modes, so far all used in PSP8.1 though.
My grandson took over at my compute and only left this morning so hopefully I can get some serious painting done starting in the morning.

And for good reason.

Welcome back to RetouchPRO. You (and your talent & creativity) have been away far too long.

This is a great tutorial you have put together. Thanks for posting the link.

I remember this one. You've inspired me to try again. I buzzed, VP oil with a strong canvas texture, then did another layer with septia, then another with just a teensy bit of PE arctic.

Many thanks Crex for this easily understood tutorial. I'm keen to try it ASAP. There were quite a few things I learned anew from it and I appreciate your patience putting all this together. I enjoyed browsing your site and especially enjoyed your Celtic designs.

Good old-fashioned ps7 filters....in this order - crystallize 5; drybrush 0,10,1; spatter 8,15.
Image adjustments - selective colors for richer look.
Render lighting effects: Light type omni, on, intensity 25, greenish yellow color. Gloss 100, material 100, exposure 0, ambience 0, texture none.
Usm - 100,90,164.
-------------------------
Opened image 1 in corel painter and cloned with bristle brush (oil). Back to ps7 - filter other-custom. I love the way the brushstrokes suddenly came alive!

Jaykita, I love both of your images. Great use of the crystalize filter in the first and wonderful vivid colors in both

Any hints on the settings you used for the Custom filter?

A quick play with Painter (Oil Cloner).

Then touch up in Photoshop:
~dodging to darken a few shadows
~highpass to deepen paint strokes
~saturation adjustment to increase color saturation
~a few paint strokes
~Wow-paint edge enhance extreme filter

I think it's the Default custom filter, i.e. centre box 5, surrounded by minus 1 on all four sides. Rest of the boxes are empty.

I began w/ a tutorial I found here called "Crackled Color" and then went off on my own, using selections & hue/sat to enhance the color range.

Painter 8.1

Stuck with Digital Water Colours mainly.
Used DWC cloners at times also Blenders/Stump

Tried to achieve something Van gogh would have made, with just gradient-map layer for color change. But dissatisfied with result.
Anyway, details in layer palette. Gradient map used is color harmonies 1 -Blue-Violet, Yellow-Orange. Might still find that magical colorscheme!

Wow! Everyone's having a lot of fun with this one, and turning in so many interesting takes!

Started with a sketch, and added color back in, then changed colors using Color Range/Color Balance/Hue-Sat, then added a Lighting effect and an overlay blur layer for softness, erasing/masking to taste.

I'm jumping into the Painter Tiling along with everyone else who is exploring Painter. I agree with Raniday in that it is MUCH easier doing it this way than with real tiles. I remember back to 5th grade when our class took on a monumental project for the whole school. We made a 4 ft. x 5 ft stylized rendition of our school mascot all in tiles. How many years ago was that...................? Last summer when I took my npehews to lunch, it was still hanging in the school cafeteria. And this project only took a few minutes.

Hang in there,

Janet

Cool effect!! :

If I tried that in PShop, I'd still be going at it tomorrow... (and then I'd trash it because it wouldn't come out good).

BUT -- can we still eat the grapes?

Janet Petty
02-05-2005, 09:41 AM
Thanks CJ. Somehow I don't think the texture of ceramic grapes would be very appealing. :)

I have been thinking about trying to do something like the tiles in photoshop and wondering if it would be a futile effort. It certainly wouldn't be as "random" as the tiles generated in Painter; but I do think it could be done. I'll have to ponder it.
