* Combine #1 and #2 in some way, shape or form.

This is a lovely old mission, I visited there once many years ago.

I did both of these the same way:
First, adjusted levels, saturation, etc., and applied a light Buzz simplifier
Duplicated the background twice to make three layers:
Paint Engine "arctic", opacity 80%
Paint Engine "impressionist 2", opacity 80%
Background
Did a copy merge, applied a solid color adjustment layer, with color picked from the white of the mission
painted with a rough pastel brush
added texture

Don't know why it didn't work yesterday. The first image I tried was 100.3K, just over the limit. It gave me an error, so I re-saved the image slightly smaller and tried again. It kept giving me an upload error, even when I exited & re-entered the forum, and tried to upload a different image. Today, I'm able to upload without any problems. :question:

I used buZZ simplifier 2, MS Impressionist, Spatter Strokes, and Texturizer.

Welcome back. Glad to see you gave the new software a spin. As usual I like your use of Impressionist, now my favorite plugin.

Lately I've been relying too much on 3rd party filters and plugins, so I decided to keep this on pretty basic and only use effects that come with the base Photoshop product.

Here are the steps:
1. Duplicate background (Layer A)
2. Layer A: Apply Cutout (4,4,2) and Spatter (experiment with settings) to rough it up a bit. I liked the way Cutout simplified the colors in general, but I didn't like the sharp color change in the sky, but we'll fix that in a minute in step 8.
3. Create Layer B: Duplicated background again and dragged to the top of the layer stack.
4. Apply Spatter (10,11) followed by Unsharp Mask (250,7,0) to rough it up a bit.
5. Layer > New Layer Mask > Hide All. Black thumbnail appears and layer appears to be turned off.
6. Set foreground color to white.
7. Select Brush from Tools palette, turn on Airbrush setting, set opacity to about 50%, flow ~ 50%.
8. Airbrush areas of sky to reveal the "textured" sky in Layer B, hiding the Cutout effect on Layer A. (Switch to BLACK and airbrush to 'undo.')
9. Duplicate background a third time and drag to top of layer stack creating Layer C.
10. Apply Find Edges filter and set blend mode to Overlay.
11. This time Layer > New Layer Mask > Reveal all
12. Set foreground color to BLACK.
13. Select Brush, turn on Airbrush setting, set opacity to about 50%, flow ~ 50%.
14. Airbrush area at right - bottom, that decorative artwork (whatever that thing is). I thought the Find Edges effect didn't look particularly good there. (Switch to WHITE and airbrush to 'undo.')

See. You can do arty things without a lot of extra filters and plugins!

With all this cold weather on the east coast you must have thought we needed a break by sending us to Tuscon, AZ. So I tried to combine the two images into a travel poster.
All that was done was to change the images into cutout and re-color. Then I did a drop shadow and added some text.
