View Full Version : Creative interpretations: Commuter Train DannyRaphael 01-19-2004, 09:41 PM I thought this picture taken by Doug Kay would lend itself to one of the moody effects I've seen applied to images. Looks like Humphey Bogart should be entering stage right.
Happy creating.
~Danny~
p.s. If you have never heard of Bogart, enjoy the fact you're a lot younger than I am! DannyRaphael 01-19-2004, 10:22 PM I really like how this free Mike Finn action (Watercolor) worked on this one. It's available here: http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~mikefinn/action.html
Copied the original BG to the top of the layer stack, Layer > Add Layer Maek > Hide all and airbrushed white to restore a touch of detal around the people on the platform and to tone down the lamp glare.
Finished up by adding Hue/Sat and Levels adjustment layers to the top of the layer stack to fine tune the effect.
~Danny~ jch71566 01-20-2004, 10:00 AM Nice picture and Nice manipulation, Danny!
I, too, am old enough to appreciate Bogart. :)
Here's my interpretation:
* Increase saturation/lightness
* Unsharp Mask (1,150,0) 2x
* Paint Shop Pro Edge preserving smooth (30)
* Unsharp Mask (1,150,0)
* Paint Shop Pro Edge preserving smooth (30)
* Remove one distracting white spot (select & median filter)
* buZZ simplifier 1
I was trying to not use any plugins, but buZZ really added something.

Never seem to get the upload thin right so here is the link if needed.
http://www.pbase.com/image/25321299.jpg Patricia 01-20-2004, 08:41 PM I love seeing Bogie next to the train, Platscha!
I went for a darker, moodier look. First I adjusted the levels, then added a little grain. I dodged the figures to make them brighter, and added a little mist with the Xero filter. I added a black solid color adjustment layer, then painted to reveal only part of the image. A setting worthy of Bogart, I hope!
Patricia Mike Finn 01-20-2004, 11:51 PM Nice image Danny...
I ran my new action "DigiDoodle" (Unreleased as yet) over it and this is just one result I liked. Tried to increase the "mood"
Mike Finn platscha@cs.com 01-21-2004, 12:00 AM Nice effect as always. Mike Finn 01-21-2004, 12:33 AM But here's another from the same action..... A bit more of a smoky painted effect.

test post - hi!
Kent ahutton 03-10-2004, 03:13 PM This one is mostly PSP8's large drybrush, buzz and xero lineart with monochrome.
AmyHutton Ran a Motion Blur on the train. Inverted and ran a Mini Finn: Texture (Layer) Edge Effect (Layer) Sprayed Strokes (layer)
Cheers
Duv DannyRaphael 03-10-2004, 08:43 PM I was experimenting with "channel swapping," the interchange of channels using the Channels palette menu commands Split Channels and Merge Channels. The results are usually very colorful and most unpredictable.
It's kind of like applying the Stylize > Solarize filter, but with more control and options.
This one is a combination of two channel swap results merged onto individual layers. The layers were blended using a Black-to-white gradient on the top layer's Layer Mask and setting this layer's blend mode to Linear Burn to give it some more funkiness.
I got the action to carve things up from the action exchange at http://studio.adobe.com/. Search on Photo_Weave if you are interested.
~Danny~ The same "entity" looking out of the windows. Xero soft mood followed by Xero Ultraviolet, then Flaming Pear Melancholytron.
Cheers
Duv Cheryl H 03-12-2004, 07:52 PM I usually have a hard time with dark photos, but the wonderful interpretations posted so far tempted me to try again.
This is a mix of lucis art and nik's midnight filter topped with several different pattern fill layers in soft light blending mode. ahutton 03-12-2004, 08:40 PM Cheryl, I've never heard of those filters. Pray tell, where does one find them. The result is very interesting.
AmyHutton Cheryl H 03-12-2004, 09:01 PM The nik filters were a great purchase. I really enjoy them. The ones I use the most are midnight, brilliance and warmth, and monday morning. You can find more info here. http://www.nikmultimedia.com/welcome/windowsxp/SpecialOffers.shtml
I haven't found anything like Lucis and I really like what it does, but I'm not as convinced of the value of this filter--yet. :-)

A big part of the effect is just from putting lots of different pattern fill layers in soft light blending mode over the image. |
