Glad to see you made your 1st post. Interesting question. Glad I was among the first to get to vote. I started with 5.5 and upgraded to 7.0.

Decided to pass on CS -- at least until the first update is available. Even then, it's unlikely I'll upgrade. I'll probably hold out for (the equivalent of) 9.0.

I've used Photoshop since 2.5, so I clicked 2.0 just to impress :)

I was introduced to Photoshop pretty early on. A friend owned a type setting studio and had lots of fun little macs around with Photoshop 3 on them :)

I had never really touched a computer, saw dos and thought..nah!
but when I saw photoshop!! whole new thinking!
and once 4 came around with layers!!! I never looked back :)

Started out with 4.0 (now using CS), and all I remember doing with 4.0 was brightness/contrast for underexposed or overexposed photographs, and unsharpen mask to sharpen out of focus photographs. At that time Photoshop seemed incredibly full-featured (still does today to think of it).

I'm with him. Started with 2.5 although I actually owned 2.0 or 2.1 or something like that.

I actually started with Corel Draw/Paint and upgraded that software suite for many years before finally switching over to PhotoShop 5.0. Of course now I'm up to PhotoShop CS.

I started with 3.0 and painfully went through every upgrade :dizzy: And every time I say "Ok, this is perfect, I never need to upgrade!!!" Silly me!

I would swear I answered this question, but don't see a reply by me, so I guess I didn't!
I started out with 3.0, upgraded to 4.0, and stayed with that until upgrading to 7. It was a bit of a leap, as I really was quite happy with 4. Am now using CS.

I started with 5.0, then went to 7.0. That's where I am now, and I'll probably wait till there's at least one more upgrade before I opt for it.

Photoshop LE 1.04 was my first Photoshop version; the first full one was 2.0. I skipped the 4.0 release, but upgraded for all the other ones.

Hi Everyone! This is my first post also.

I actually started out using Paint Shop Pro 7 then upgraded to 8. Of course everyone told me that I just had to learn Photoshop if I wanted to be taken seriously in the industry. So now I have Photoshop 7, which I'm learning slowly but surely.

I highly doubt I'll be upgrading to anything further especially after attempting to get help from Adobe Tech Support, which btw, isn't a toll-free call. Only to be told that since I don't have the most current version (CS) any help they provide will cost me an additional $40.00. But of course if I upgrade tech support is free. After all the manicures and pedicures I had to sacrifice to get the version I do have, there's no freaking way I'm going to give them another red cent!

i used Paint Shop Pro for some time, then i finally had PS4... only recently i installed PS7 (yes, installed, not upgraded - i use both PS4 and 7 now - my comp is pretty crappy oldie, so 4 is great for "minor" works ;) )... i don't see myself upgrading any time soon...

New here too, I went from PhotoDeluxe to Photoshop 7.0 (a lot like photodeluxe but more features), I also have Paint Shop Pro for small things. Am still learning both. :)

Just joined recently after reading Katrin Eismann's Restoration and Retouching book. Her web site has a link to here. I started with Photoshop 3.0, still have the floppy disks somewhere, upgraded to 4.0, then 5.0, then 5.5, then 6.0, to 7.0 and now CS. Super busy at a local studio retouching blemishes and such off high school seniors so don't have much time to explore the site like I would like to.

I started on v2 using a collegues Mac (as at that time I was PC, still am!)
Had no idea what I was doing, and played around with it at every opportunity.

Went to the verious versions 3,4,5,7, 8, and am still 'playing around with it' although I hope I have learnt a bit along the way :grin:

I stated with a Beta of Version 2.0 and this will really blow your socks off.... I was running on an Atari emulating a Mac Plus. Ahhh the days of Font DA Mover and such.

I only started using Photoshop CS about six months ago. It was a mandatory buy (gotta love educational discounts) for a class I was taking and have been hooked ever since.

I started with Photoshop 6 and upgraded to 7. Although I appreciated the upgrade the difference was not enough for me to decide to jump to CS or even CS 2. I will probably wait atleast one more upgrade before I spend money on another version.

Hi Guys, brand new to the site but been lurking a while. I'm really learning a lot from the tutorials and comments - great community.

Anyway, I started with PS5 then drifted away from photography for a while.
Came back with PSP8 before getting PS7. I upgraded this to CS. I'm not an Adobe fan, but have to admit that Photoshop is the only way to go.

I have tried the CS2 upgrade, but I think I'm going to wait. I think I'm going to upgrade CS with the Bibble plug-in, which I much prefer to ACR.

Well I started on Paint Shop Pro 3 but my first copy of Photoshop was version 4 it came free with an epson scanner which was one of the big incentives to buy it as photoshop cost more than the scanner did. My manager went into town bought the biggest photoshop book he could find and away I went, never looked back.

i think my first paint program was on a C-64, but i'll be darned if i can remember what it was :) staying with commodore, i made the move to an amiga 2000 and bought deluxe paint iii, a great program, one of the simplest ever to use. reluctantly, i had to make the move to pc's and found a shareware version of paint shop pro, back before jasc got into the works, version 4.12. it's still around on the net somewhere.

after using Paint Shop Pro 4.12 for years on and off, i finally decided out of guilt that i really shld register it and pay for it and get the latest version. and lo and behold, about that time, psp 7 came out in the local retail store so i took the plunge, upgraded it to 7.2 and have been using it ever since.

i still miss my amiga and deluxe paint iii though :)

Anybody remember the Koala "drawing tablet" for the Atari 400/800?

It came with software you ran from the floppy drive (we're talking single density 5.25" here). That's what I started with. I was a freshman in high school at the time. And I didn't even have the drawing pad, just the software. The pad used one of the joystick ports. But since I didn't have the pad, I just plugged in the joystick (yep, one of those old school black Atari joysticks with the red fire button in the corner). It gave me some rudimentary control. I could clumbsily paint, Etch-A-Sketch style. And there was about 8 colors you could work with.

How far technology has come... Now I'm using Photoshop CS2 (been using Phososhop since version 2.??), with a 12"x18" Wacom Intous tablet, waiting for the Wacom Cintiq 21UX that I ordered to ship. Can't wait to get my hands on that!

That was great reading about it again. All our school had was the Koala Paint software disk. Oh how we wanted the pad, too. It was a lot of fun, though.

Back then when I was tinkering with Koala Paint was about the same time I was looking into getting a light pen so I could draw right on the TV screen. For whatever reason, they never caught on. It's taken technology over 22 years to get back to that point--being able to draw right on the screen. Now, if Wacom would just ship the thing...

I started with Photoshop 5 and fell in love with it. I am self taught, and I can't believe what I still don't know. I love this site because I learn so much by practicing and seeing what others are doing. I have upgraded to CS 2 and I am still learning all that is new on it.

I actually started with Photoshop 4.0 (still have it). But then Jasc lured me over with Paintshop Pro 8 which had a cool new feature (new to me at least) at the time called background eraser (Photoshop has since added that feature as well) and a way better UI that was customizable to boot. Not to mention it was $60. It also had all of those "auto" features I liked to use for most photos without being so crippled like photoshop elements. I also appreciated that Jasc let you try to program for free for 30 days (Adobe hadn't done that yet either.)

I still hang on to my v4 copy of Photoshop for upgrade pricing in case either Corel or Adobe gives me a good reason to switch back over to Adobe. I anxiously await the next "showdown" -- CS3 versus PSP11?

Started with the first version of Photoshop. I also started with the first version of Pagemaker (what a dog). When I called, I think it was Aldus, they said, "yes, they were planning to fix the bugs in the next version which I could upgrade to for $125."..... went back to Word and migrated to Quark when it came on the market, but I digress. With Photoshop I haven't jumped every time an ungraded was released, unless I saw some significant changes, which with some versions, was questionable. Now I switch back between CS, CS2. I found an older disk of photographic edges version 4 the other day and wanted to see if I could use any of the edges. Needed to use OSX9 and booted up Photoshop 6.... boy have things changed.

OMG Kraellin, I remember the Commodore 64 days and those huge black floppies and having to load and then "run" your programs which could take FOREVER! MY kids had the cutest "muppet keyboard" they put out for it. Those were the days... not.

Nan... I go back to the Atari 800 days. No floppy (cassett tape was the only storage method) and a full 8K of ram!!! LOL I was running Pagemaker, PhotoShop and Freehand on the Atari under emulation back in the mid 80's, but there was a DTP program for the Atari called "Pagestream" that was light years ahead of Pagemaker even then. Pagestream would do kerning, drop caps, leading, etc. and PM didn't have a clue.

BTW.. I have Extensis Photo Frame from OS 9 days. I converted them all to jpeg, printed out thumbnails and still use them. I open as a JPEG resize to fit the current project copy and paste them into a new channel. Still does the job.

Wow, Swampy... you can't even run an operating system let along a program on 8k of ram.
I bit the bullet and bought PGE6, did even think about converting my Edges from Volume 4... smart move swampy!

I started using Photoshop in version 2.1 (came on floppy disks) on a Mac SE Classic with 8 MB of RAM. We finally upgraded to 16 MB.

I wonder how long the Photoshop speed test would take on that old machine? A couple of hours?

Before Photoshop, I used a Paasche 'AB' model turbine-driven airbrush mostly - with dyes and liquid acrylics.

It seems like ages ago that programs came on floppy disk! And I don't care what Steve Jobs says... the floppy drive is still handy for porting a couple JPEGS or PDF files to someone. And we still have customers that bring us jobs on floppy at the print shop. It seems such a waste to burn a CD for a 128K file!!

I'll never touch a floppy disk again, except if I find one laying around and happen to toss it in the trash. CD's are just as cheap.

Who provides files on floppy anymore? Hillbillies? I haven't had a client use that media for probably close to 8 or 10 years.

Maybe you work in a sophisticated metropolitan area where everyone has the latest and greatest in technology, but I don't and your patronizing attitude won't win you any points here.

Your inference that me or my clients are "hillbillies" because we exchange files via floppy disk is both offensive and demeaning and has no place in this discussion.

Well now that depends on the type services you offer... for example, restoration, where old technology; be it photographic plates, storage media and even obscelete file formats are not uncommon, a few of the restoration jobs I have done have come to me on floppies (being the only surviving copy of the image in existence) it all comes with the territory in this case.

I started with Jasc Paint Shop 4 and I'm now using Paint Shop Pro XI. I recently bought PhotoShop CS2 after using Elements 4.0 for a while. I'm still more comfortable with Paint Shop Pro but I'm slowly learning my way around PhotoShop.
